Classical Scholarship and Its History by Stephen Harrison,Christopher Pelling Pdf

It is unusual for a single scholar practically to reorient an entire sub-field of study, but this is what Chris Stray has done for the history of UK classical scholarship. His remarkable combination of interests in the sociology of scholars and scholarship, in the history of the book and of publishing, and (especially) in the detailed intellectual contextualisation of classical scholarship as a form of classical reception has fundamentally changed the way the history of British classics and its study is viewed. A generation ago the history of classical scholarship still consisted largely of accounts of particular scholars and groups of scholars written by other scholars from a broadly biographical and ‘heroic individual’ perspective. In these works scholars often sought to find their own place in the great tradition, choosing to praise or blame those whose work they admired or deprecated, and to identify with particular schools or trends, and there were few attempts to provide a broader and less prosopographical perspective. Almost all the chapters in the volume originated as papers at a conference in honour of the honorand, and have been improved both by discussion there and by the rigorous peer-review process conducted by the two experienced editors. It covers various aspects of classical reception, with a particular focus on the history of scholars, their institutions, and their writings; the main focus is on the UK, but there are also substantial engagements with continental Europe and (especially) the USA; the period covered runs from the Renaissance to the present. The cast contains a number of world-famous names. Unusually, the volume also contains an essay by the honorand, but we are very keen to include this, especially as it focusses on the topic of scholarly collaboration.

Athenian Economy and Society by Edward Cohen Pdf

In this ground-breaking analysis of the world's first private banks, Edward Cohen convincingly demonstrates the existence and functioning of a market economy in ancient Athens while revising our understanding of the society itself. Challenging the "primitivistic" view, in which bankers are merely pawnbrokers and money-changers, Cohen reveals that fourth-century Athenian bankers pursued sophisticated transactions. These dealings--although technologically far removed from modern procedures--were in financial essence identical with the lending and deposit-taking that separate true "banks" from other businesses. He further explores how the Athenian banks facilitated tax and creditor avoidance among the wealthy, and how women and slaves played important roles in these family businesses--thereby gaining legal rights entirely unexpected in a society supposedly dominated by an elite of male citizens. Special emphasis is placed on the reflection of Athenian cognitive patterns in financial practices. Cohen shows how transactions were affected by the complementary opposites embedded in the very structure of Athenian language and thought. In turn, his analysis offers great insight into daily Athenian reality and cultural organization.

Excerpt from Transactions of the Philological Society, 1885-7 Tale, 1953, which occurs as a rime to registre. I remember Seeing a remark, I think in Notes and Queries, that this form baffles explanation; and, at any rate, Dr. Morris has not explained it. However, it presents no difficulty; the r is merely intrusive, and the word is equivalent to a Low Lat. Diuin-ista, formed by adding -ista to the stem of drain-as. To those who tell us that we cannot explain the r in this word, we have merely to reply that we are not called upon to do more than to declare it to be intrusive. Excerpt from Transactions of the Philological Society, 1860-1 Compounds which are ranged under them. Similar ends suggest analogous means. As the Chinese extend the ar rangement by the number of strokes from the Roots them selves to the Compounds ranged under them, so we of the West extend the alphabetic arrangement from the letters of the Alphabet themselves to the words ranged under them, according to the alphabetic succession of the letters in each word. Ou turning in Chinese to the Root, you find the Com pound under it, in its proper place, indicated as this is by the number of distinct strokes which compose it, independent of the Root. Thus in looking at the character or word 'which sigui fies Copper, before he seeks it in the Dictionary, the searcher sees at a glance it is Kin tsza P00, the root Kin, or metal with the addition of another character of six strokes, and thus easily discovers the word in its proper place, defined as the species copper under the genus metal We shall see presently that the Chinese have not availed themselves, to the fullest extent, of the advan tages which this admirably ingenious method held out. Propertius by D. Thomas Benediktson Pdf

An examination of Propertius in light of nonclassical, modernist literary techniques, especially internal monologue or stream of consciousness and imagism. Classical writers typically try to order or shape disparate experiences while modernists seek to present the complexity and disarray of human experience. Failing to realize that Propertius is in the modernist camp has led previous textual critics to divide and reorganize his poems. A. E. Housman, for example, unsuccessfully tried to reorder the lines in one Propertian poem into a logical and chronological sequence. On the contrary, Propertius, like the modernists, attempts to communicate experience itself through the association of ideas or through the reflection upon a visual picture or series of pictures (imagism, or what Pound described as the "superposition" of image and narrative). Benediktson finds philosophical justification for imagism in the Epicurean theory of images and in the Epicurean theorist and poet Philodemus, as well as in the doctrine of utpictura poesis. The result is a picture of Propertius that accounts for the mathematical precision of Book I, the structural chaos of Book II, and the more balanced poetry of Books III and IV.
