Traveling Backward by Elayne Wareing Fitzpatrick Pdf

TRAVELING BACKWARD is a highly original philosophic romp beyond the youth of old age with a quixotic ‘journalist turned mom turned academic turned peasant.’ It’s a kind of light-hearted guide to the wisdom of the ages—from Socrates to existentialism and beyond—gleaned during a struggle to recover the images that fi rst touched her heart and to answer two questions: Who am I really? Where does the world come from? It’s a colorful, occasionally poignant, journey that could help you look at life through the reverent eyes of a child again. GLIMPSES OF ‘TRAVELING BACKWARD’ : “You two remind me of Peter Pan. Trouble is, I’m not sure which one of you is Peter Pan. Well, I was taken aback. But my mate took action. Muttering something negative about fairy stories, he headed for the door and disappeared down the hall. I started to follow him but changed my mind. Instead, I headed for the public library to reread Peter Pan. Had I missed something?” (Elayne Wareing Fitzpatrick) “Human life – indeed all life – is poetry. It’s we who live it, unconsciously, day by day. . . Yet in its inviolable wholeness it lives us, it composes us. . . We are works of art, but we are not the artist. . . Dare everything, need nothing.” (Lou Andreas—Salome) “I relate to [Andreas—Salome’s] passionate struggle for truth, to her ultimate reverence for all life, and to her desire to enjoy intellectual friendships with a variety of men, free of sexual overtones.” (Fitzpatrick) “I was discovering that, deep down, I didn’t really ‘take’ to popular culture, crowds, and bustling cities, regardless of my curiosity, regardless of my journalist’s delight in writing about all of it.” (Fitzpatrick) “If you can’t change the world, change worlds.” (St. Francis of Assisi) “If I were ever to choose a place away from my country, it would surely be a Greek island, outside Athens. . . In Greece, I feel completely at home. Maybe that’s because, as the poet Shelley said, ‘We’re all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion, our arts have their roots in Greece.” (Fitzpatrick) “Back straight and head held high, he would place his left arm on my right shoulder, snap his fingers and lead me in the graceful, deliberate movements of the Zorba dance, accompanied by a recording of Mozart’s 40th played on the bouzouki. This against a backdrop of tinkling goat bells and singing monks gathered in a distant church.” (Fitzpatrick) “Many of the highs and lows in my life. . . have resulted from conflict born of the struggle between my own strong loving, nesting needs and my equally strong needs for freedom to think, to adventure, to discover, to express myself.” (Fitzpatrick) “All parts of this one organic whole – this one God – are different expressions of the same energy, and they are all in communication with each other, influencing each other, therefore parts of one organic whole.” (Robinson Jeffers) “How did matter happen that makes the stars and cool planets and living beings? And how did the space happen that contains the stars and planets?. . . Much is still very hypothetical. Much is still unknown. Much, we will never know. . . Life is struggle, pain and suffering. But it is also extraordinarily glorious creativity.” (Dr. Kai Woehler) “Like Socrates, I’ve experienced an inner voice that usually let’s me know when I’m about to go off-track, and I’ve come to believe, with Kant, in a moral law within.” (Fitzpatrick) “Nature’ – wonderful and awe-inspiring as it is – can’t participate in a verbal dialogue, can’t exchange and explore ideas with the human mind. We can relate to the animals, the birds, the insects, the fish, and the flora with our most primitive instincts and feel joy, spiritual ecstasy in so recognizing our kinship. Yet nothing in Nature can compare with the human need for a warm

Gravity's Time by C. S. Unnikrishnan Pdf

This book is unique and exceptional in dealing with the notion of physical time rigorously, both logically and empirically. The central theme is the intimate relation between physical time and cosmic gravity. It establishes and explains, in an accessible manner, the one crucial physical fact that has been missed in the development of modern physics—that the enormous gravity of the matter and energy in the Universe is the controller and cause of the relativistic time. The material in the book is accurate and free of the ambiguities in the discussion of time and its modifications (dilation), synchronization of clocks, and simultaneity. The contents go beyond the current theories of relativity that fail to incorporate the cosmic gravity in their structure. The discussion of clocks in satellite navigational systems (like the GPS) is the most complete and accurate. The book offers several new insights, and it is the only available treatise on the complete physical truth about time. The contents are addressed to a wide range of readers, from general readers and students to experienced researchers, and will also appeal well to philosophers and historians of physics. This book has the enabling quality to deal with difficult questions about physical time, with unprecedented clarity and without paradoxes.

The Tenseless Theory of Time by W.L. Craig Pdf

he present book and its companion volume The Tensed Theory of Time: a T Critical Examination are an attempt to adjudicate what one recent discussant has called "the most fundamental question in the philosophy of time," namely, "whether a static or a dynamic conception ofthe world is correct. "] I had originally intended to treat this question in the space of a single volume; but the study swelled into two. I found that an adequate appraisal of these two competing theories of time requires a wide-ranging discussion of issues in metaphysics, philosophy of language, phenomenology, philosophy of science, philosophy of space and time, and even philosophy of religion, and that this simply could not be done in one volume. If these volumes succeed in making a contribution to the debate, it will be precisely because of the synoptic nature of the discussion therein. Too often the question of the nature of time has been prematurely answered by some philosopher or physicist simply because he is largely ignorant of relevant discussions outside his chosen field of expertise. In these two complementary but independent volumes I have attempted to appraise what I take to be the most important arguments drawn from a variety of fields for and against each theory of time.

Travels in Arabia by John Lewis Burckhardt Pdf

John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817), the son of a Swiss Colonel undertook the journey to Mekkah in 1814. A master of the Arabic language and the Islamic religion, he assumed the guise of an Arab using the name of Sheikh Ibrahim in his travels, which he began in 1809 under the sponsorship of Sir Joseph Banks and the African Association. Burckhardt's description of the Hedjaz was the first accurate one to reach Europe. According to Leake in his preface ..." Burckhardt transmitted to the Association the most accurate and complete account of the Hedjaz, including the cities of Mekka and Medina, which has ever been received in Europe." His journals are invaluable for their observations on the Arab people and for his important geographical discoveries, including the site of Petra, Apameia, and the general structure of the peninsula of Mount Sinai. His knowledge of the Arabic language, and of Mohammedan manners, had enabled him to assumne the Muselman character with such success, that he resided in Mekka during the whole time of the pilgrimage, and passed through the various ceremonies of the occasion, without the slightest suspicion having arisen as to his real character. The folding plans include Makkah, Madinah, Wady Muna and Arafat.

Time Travel by Paul J. Nahin Pdf

From H.G. Wells to Isaac Asimov to Ursula K. Le Guin, time travel has long been a favorite topic and plot device in tales of science fiction and fantasy. But as any true SF fan knows, astounding stories about traversing alternate universes and swimming the tides of time demand plausible science. That’s just what Paul J. Nahin’s guide provides. An engineer, physicist, and published science fiction writer, Nahin is uniquely qualified to explain the ins and outs of how to spin such complex theories as worm holes, singularity, and relativity into scientifically sound fiction. First published in 1997, this fast-paced book discusses the common and not-so-common time-travel devices science fiction writers have used over the years, assesses which would theoretically work and which would not, and provides scientific insight inventive authors can use to find their own way forward or backward in time. From hyperspace and faster-than-light travel to causal loops and the uncertainty principle and beyond, Nahin’s equation-free romp across time will help writers send their characters to the past or future in an entertaining, logical, and scientific way. If you ever wanted to set up the latest and greatest grandfather paradox—or just wanted to know if the time-bending events in the latest pulp you read could ever happen—then this book is for you.

The Time Machine Hypothesis by Damien Broderick Pdf

Every age has characteristic inventions that change the world. In the 19th century it was the steam engine and the train. For the 20th, electric and gasoline power, aircraft, nuclear weapons, even ventures into space. Today, the planet is awash with electronic business, chatter and virtual-reality entertainment so brilliant that the division between real and simulated is hard to discern. But one new idea from the 19th century has failed, so far, to enter reality—time travel, using machines to turn the time dimension into a two-way highway. Will it come true, as foreseen in science fiction? Might we expect visits to and from the future, sooner than from space? That is the Time Machine Hypothesis, examined here by futurist Damien Broderick, an award-winning writer and theorist of the genre of the future. Broderick homes in on the topic through the lens of science as well as fiction, exploring some fifty different time-travel scenarios and conundrums found in the science fiction literature and film.
