Echoes of Wisdom Or Talmudic Sayings With Classic, Especially Latin, Parallelisms, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by G. Taubenhaus Pdf

Excerpt from Echoes of Wisdom or Talmudic Sayings With Classic, Especially Latin, Parallelisms, Vol. 1 In presenting Talmud and Classics together, the object is not to throw the charge of plagiarism at any door, but to bring the Talmud nearer to the under standing of at least some of the many who, lacking all knowledge of the same, profanely disparage it. The beautiful form is not the chief boast of the Classics. They are at their noblest when glorifying some metaphysical or practical truth. Where that is absent they fail to charm us. Homer and Virgil, Plato and Cicero have no fascination in spite of their rhythmic and blossoming diction when they correct no error, improve no moral, clarify no idea, and elevate no truth. The Wisdom of Israel by Edwin Collins Pdf

Excerpt from The Wisdom of Israel: Being Extracts From the Babylonian Talmud and Midrash Rabboth HE object of the Editors of this series is a very definite one. They desire above all things that, in their humble way, these books shall be the ambassadors of good-will and understanding between East and vvest - the old world of Thought and the new of Action. In this endeavour, and in their own sphere, they are but followers of the highest example in the land. They are confident that a deeper know ledge of the great ideals and lofty philosophy of Oriental thought may help to a revival of that true spirit of Charity which neither despises nor fears the nations of another creed and colour. Wit and Wisdom of the Talmud by Madison C Peters Pdf

WHILE gathering the facts for "Justice to the Jew," I chanced upon so many wise proverbs, witty sayings, beautiful parables, and quaint legends of the Talmud, that I became intensely interested in this remarkable literary production of antiquity. In its twelve folio' volumes it embodies the mental labors of the ancient Jewish teachers during the period of about eight hundred years.

The Wit & Wisdom of the Talmud by George J. Lankevich Pdf

In Jewish tradition, the Talmud embodies the laws of Judaism, as well as a way of study and intellectual development. Composed of two works, the Mishnah and the Gemara, the Talmud is believed to provide serious students with one of the most sacred of experiences. It is, in fact, the Torah (the Old Testament) and the Talmud that offer the tenets of the Jewish religion. Here, in this classic work, which represents nearly 2,000 years of learning, are those pearls of wisdom that have served as a daily guide for countless generations of people throughout the world. Some may be familiar to you; others may be new. Some may provoke a laugh; others, a tear. All, however, offer illuminating insights and direction that can provide a foundation for a compassionate and focused life.

Urim and Thummim and Extracts from the Talmud (Classic Reprint) by M. L. Rosvally Pdf

Excerpt from Urim and Thummim and Extracts From the Talmud The Bible does not distinctly tell us what the Urim and Thummim were. That they were not the twelve precious stones contained in the breast-plate, as some have erroneously imagined, is quite clear. We do not find that God directed Moses to make the Urim and Thummim, as He did when He said: And thou shalt make the breast-plate of judgment with cunning work, &c. - Exodus xxviii., r 5. It is very plain from the text itself, that the Urim and Thummim were something in addition to the breast-plate, and put therein after it was finished, by Moses himself, and therefore God says And thou shalt put into the breast-plate of judgment the Urim and Thummim. From this fact it is evident that there was something additional placed in the breast-plate by Moses, and for this reason, it is supposed that it was made double, that it might the more conveniently hold them. Tales and Maxims from the Talmud (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Rapaport Pdf

Excerpt from Tales and Maxims From the TalmudMy introduction to the first series of this work gives fully the scope of the Talmud. Here I have only to add that the excerpts of this (the second) series contain some "Tales" which may be thought somewhat fantastic and "Maxims" that may be considered rather quaint. But those who know the thoughts, ideas and mental make-up of the ancient Rabbis will look upon these "Tales and Maxims" rather from a poetical than a literal standpoint, and will know how to differentiate between the raillery and the sublime in this bright light of ethical teaching blended with the shadow of legend.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
