With Fire and Sword is a historical novel, set in the 17th century in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Khmelnytsky Uprising. It gained enormous popularity in Poland, and by the turn of the 20th century had become one of the most popular Polish books ever. Despite some deviations, this book's historical framework is genuine and the fictional story is woven into real events. Many characters are historical figures. The author, Henryk Sienkiewicz, researched memoirs and chronicles of the Polish nobility for details on life in 17th-century Poland. The author's writing style intertwines epic plots and heroic scenes with historical accuracy. His vivid language makes this book one of the most popular books about that particular place and era of the Polish history.

Napoleon Bonaparte is Emperor of France, his ultimate aim: to rule Europe. After defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar, he wins a glorious victory against Austria at Austerlitz. He then deposes the Spanish king and places his own brother on the throne. But he is yet to triumph over his most hated enemy: Great Britain. A few days later, the Lieutenant and his retinue were marching with quick pace towards Lubni. When they had forded the Dnieper, they marched along the broad highway across the steppes which connects Chigrin with Lubni, winding through Juki, Semimogil and Khorol. Similar roads led from the capital of the Prince's territory to Kiev. In earlier times, before the battle which Hetman Jolkyevski fought against Solonitza, there were no roads at all; one had to travel from Lubni to Kiev across the steppes and over the desert; the way to Chigrin was by water, and on returning one passed through Khorol. Taking it all together, the country beyond the Dnieper, the former land of the Polovyets, was a desert, scarcely more populous than the Wild Lands, often infested by Tartars, and without protection from the bands of Zaporo- jians. On the banks of the Sula, rose immense forests, teeming with life, seldom traversed by the foot of man. At certain places on the slopes of the Sula, and Ruda, Sleporod, Koro- vaya, Orjavtsa, Pshol, and other greater and smaller rivers and streams, marshes had formed. These were partly overgrown with thick brush, and forests, and partly open land resembling a meadow. In these woods and morasses, animals, of all descriptions found a convenient hiding-place. In the darkest depths of the forests roamed an immense number of aurochs,1 bears, and wild-boars, and also an incalculable number of wolves, lynxes, martens, herds of deer, and red antelopes. In the swamps and pools, beavers built their dams; and the saying was current among Zaporojians, that among these beavers, there were some a century old, and snow-white with age. On the high dry steppes, roamed herds of wild horses with shasrgy heads and blood-shot eyes. The rivers teemed with fish, and ...

Sword of Fire by Katharine Kerr Pdf

This first novel of an epic fantasy trilogy reintroduces readers to the beloved and bestselling world of Deverry, blending magic, politics, and adventure in an unforgettable setting. The bards are the people's voice--and their sword. All over the kingdom of Deverry, the common people are demanding reform of the corrupt law courts. In Aberwyn, the situation catches fire when Gwerbret Ladoic, second in authority only to the High King, allows a bard to starve to death rather than hear their grievances. Guildwoman Alyssa, a student at the local scholars' collegium, and Lady Dovina, the gwerbret's own daughter, know that evidence exists to overthrow the so-called traditional legal system, if they can only get it into the right hands. The powerful lords will kill anyone who threatens their privileges. To retrieve the proof, Alyssa must make a dangerous journey that will either change her life forever--or end it.

Fire and Sword by Leland H. Gentry,Todd M. Compton Pdf

Many Mormon dreams flourished in Missouri. So did many Mormon nightmares. The Missouri period--especially from the summer of 1838 when Joseph took over vigorous, personal direction of this new Zion until the spring of 1839 when he escaped after five months of imprisonment--represents a moment of intense crisis in Mormon history. Representing the greatest extremes of devotion and violence, commitment and intolerance, physical suffering and terror--mobbings, battles, massacres, and political “knockdowns”--it shadowed the Mormon psyche for a century. Leland Gentry was the first to step beyond this disturbing period as a one-sided symbol of religious persecution and move toward understanding it with careful documentation and evenhanded analysis. In Fire and Sword, Todd Compton collaborates with Gentry to update this foundational work with four decades of new scholarship, more insightful critical theory, and the wealth of resources that have become electronically available in the last few years. Compton gives full credit to Leland Gentry's extraordinary achievement, particularly in documenting the existence of Danites and in attempting to tell the Missourians’ side of the story; but he also goes far beyond it, gracefully drawing into the dialogue signal interpretations written since Gentry and introducing the raw urgency of personal writings, eyewitness journalists, and bemused politicians seesawing between human compassion and partisan harshness. In the lush Missouri landscape of the Mormon imagination where Adam and Eve had walked out of the garden and where Adam would return to preside over his posterity, the towering religious creativity of Joseph Smith and clash of religious stereotypes created a swift and traumatic frontier drama that changed the Church.
