Seismic Imaging and Inversion: Volume 1 by Robert H. Stolt,Arthur B. Weglein Pdf

Extracting information from seismic data requires knowledge of seismic wave propagation and reflection. The commonly used method involves solving linearly for a reflectivity at every point within the Earth, but this book follows an alternative approach which invokes inverse scattering theory. By developing the theory of seismic imaging from basic principles, the authors relate the different models of seismic propagation, reflection and imaging - thus providing links to reflectivity-based imaging on the one hand and to nonlinear seismic inversion on the other. The comprehensive and physically complete linear imaging foundation developed presents new results at the leading edge of seismic processing for target location and identification. This book serves as a fundamental guide to seismic imaging principles and algorithms and their foundation in inverse scattering theory, and is a valuable resource for working geoscientists, scientific programmers and theoretical physicists.

XPath 2.0 Programmer's Reference by Michael Kay Pdf

What is this book about? XPath 2.0 Programmer's Reference is the only authoritative reference on XPath, a sub-language within XSLT that determines which part of an XML document the XSLT transforms. Written for professional programmers who use XML every day but find the W3C XPath specifications tough to slog through, this book explains in everyday language what every construct in the language does and how to use it. It also offers background material on the design thinking behind the language, gentle criticism of the language specification when appropriate, and a diverse range of interesting examples in various application areas.

Space, Objects, Minds and Brains by Lynn C. Robertson Pdf

Lynn Robertson has been studying how brain lesions affect spatial abilities for over 20 years, and her work has revealed some surprising facts about space and its role in visual perception. In this book she combines evidence collected in her laboratory with findings from others to explore the cognitive and neural basis of spatial representations and their contributions to spatial awareness, object formation, attention, and binding.

3D Radiative Transfer in Cloudy Atmospheres by Alexander Marshak,Anthony Davis Pdf

Developments in three-dimensional cloud radiation over the past few decades are assessed and distilled into this contributed volume. Chapters are authored by subject-matter experts who address a broad audience of graduate students, researchers, and anyone interested in cloud-radiation processes in the solar and infrared spectral regions. After two introductory chapters and a section on the fundamental physics and computational techniques, the volume extensively treats two main application areas: the impact of clouds on the Earth's radiation budget, which is an essential aspect of climate modeling; and remote observation of clouds, especially with the advanced sensors on current and future satellite missions.

Text Data Management and Analysis by ChengXiang Zhai,Sean Massung Pdf

Recent years have seen a dramatic growth of natural language text data, including web pages, news articles, scientific literature, emails, enterprise documents, and social media such as blog articles, forum posts, product reviews, and tweets. This has led to an increasing demand for powerful software tools to help people analyze and manage vast amounts of text data effectively and efficiently. Unlike data generated by a computer system or sensors, text data are usually generated directly by humans, and are accompanied by semantically rich content. As such, text data are especially valuable for discovering knowledge about human opinions and preferences, in addition to many other kinds of knowledge that we encode in text. In contrast to structured data, which conform to well-defined schemas (thus are relatively easy for computers to handle), text has less explicit structure, requiring computer processing toward understanding of the content encoded in text. The current technology of natural language processing has not yet reached a point to enable a computer to precisely understand natural language text, but a wide range of statistical and heuristic approaches to analysis and management of text data have been developed over the past few decades. They are usually very robust and can be applied to analyze and manage text data in any natural language, and about any topic. This book provides a systematic introduction to all these approaches, with an emphasis on covering the most useful knowledge and skills required to build a variety of practically useful text information systems. The focus is on text mining applications that can help users analyze patterns in text data to extract and reveal useful knowledge. Information retrieval systems, including search engines and recommender systems, are also covered as supporting technology for text mining applications. The book covers the major concepts, techniques, and ideas in text data mining and information retrieval from a practical viewpoint, and includes many hands-on exercises designed with a companion software toolkit (i.e., MeTA) to help readers learn how to apply techniques of text mining and information retrieval to real-world text data and how to experiment with and improve some of the algorithms for interesting application tasks. The book can be used as a textbook for a computer science undergraduate course or a reference book for practitioners working on relevant problems in analyzing and managing text data.

Partial Differential Equations and Mathematica by Prem K. Kythe,Michael R. Schäferkotter,Pratap Puri Pdf

Early training in the elementary techniques of partial differential equations is invaluable to students in engineering and the sciences as well as mathematics. However, to be effective, an undergraduate introduction must be carefully designed to be challenging, yet still reasonable in its demands. Judging from the first edition's popularity, instructors and students agree that despite the subject's complexity, it can be made fairly easy to understand. Revised and updated to reflect the latest version of Mathematica, Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems with Mathematica, Second Edition meets the needs of mathematics, science, and engineering students even better. While retaining systematic coverage of theory and applications, the authors have made extensive changes that improve the text's accessibility, thoroughness, and practicality. New in this edition: Upgraded and expanded Mathematica sections that include more exercises An entire chapter on boundary value problems More on inverse operators, Legendre functions, and Bessel functions Simplified treatment of Green's functions that make it more accessible to undergraduates A section on the numerical computation of Green's functions Mathemcatica codes for solving most of the problems discussed Boundary value problems from continuum mechanics, particularly on boundary layers and fluctuating flows Wave propagation and dispersion With its emphasis firmly on solution methods, this book is ideal for any mathematics curricula. It succeeds not only in preparing readers to meet the challenge of PDEs, but also in imparting the inherent beauty and applicability of the subject.

Qualitative Theory in Structural Mechanics by Dajun Wang,Qishen Wang,Beichang (Bert) He Pdf

This book focuses on the qualitative theory in structural mechanics, an area that remains underdeveloped. The qualitative theory mainly deals with the static deformation and vibrational modes of linear elastic structures, and cover subjects such as qualitative properties and the existence of solutions. Qualitative properties belong to one type of structure, are at the system level and of clear regularity, and often result from analytical derivation and logical reasoning. As for the existence of solutions, it addresses a fundamental issue in structural mechanics, and has far-reaching implications for engineering applications. A better understanding of qualitative properties can assist in both numerical computation and experimental studies. It also promotes the development of better dynamic designs for structures. At the same time, a sound grasp of the existence of solutions and related subjects can aid in quantitative analysis, and help researchers establish the theoretical background essential to their work. This book is among the few that is dedicated exclusively to the qualitative theory in structural mechanics and systematically introduces the important and challenging area to a wide audience, including graduate students in engineering.
