A Dictionary of Samaritan Aramaic (2 vols.) by Abraham Tal Pdf

Given the many excellent editions of Samaritan writings (e.g. The Pentateuch) in recent years, the need was felt for a comprehensive dictionary of Samaritan Aramaic. Abraham Tal’s Dictionary of Samaritan Aramaic, the first dictionary of its kind, contains the vocabulary of the Aramaic dialect in which the Samaritans composed their texts, from the beginning of their literature in the fourth century C.E. when Aramaic was the community’s vernacular, until the end of the use of Aramaic in the eleventh century, when it was replaced by Arabic. Over a period of more than fifteen years the author has exhaustively collected material form the Samaritans’ translations of the Pentateuch, their liturgy, literary compositions, chronicles, etc., as presented in the growing corpus of scholarly editions. Comparative material from adjacent Palestinian Aramaic dialects is adduced where functional. With ample linguistic and textual notes. Particularly important for the study of Aramaic Jewish and Christian sources composed during the Roman and Byzantine periods in the Land of Israel, and an absolute must for Biblical Scholars. Entries in Samaritan-Aramaic (Hebrew block script); English translations; Hebrew translations; bibliographical abbreviations, etc., in English.

The Complete Original Hebrew Text of the Old Testament Or Tanakh by Muhammad Wolfgang G. A. Schmidt Pdf

This book is a revised edition of the Old Testament in Hebrew or the Hebrew Bible (TANAKH) and is intended for students, pastors and Bible scholars in developing nations who, for various reasons, do not have easy access to such resources. This Hebrew Old Testament edition is based on the Westminster Leningrad Codex, a scholarly respected text edition. Without intending to be a text-critical edition and without containing an explicit text-critical apparatus, it also contains hints on variant readings in other major editions of the text, such as the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) and Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ).

Latin-into-Hebrew: Texts and Studies by Alexander Fidora,Harvey J. Hames,Yossef Schwartz Pdf

This two-volume work, Latin-into-Hebrew: Texts and Studies sheds new light on an under-investigated phenomenon of European medieval intellectual history: the transmission of knowledge and texts from Latin into Hebrew between the twelfth and the fifteenth century. Because medieval Jewish philosophy and science in Christian Europe drew mostly on Hebrew translations from Arabic, the significance of the input from the Christian majority culture has been neglected. Latin-into-Hebrew: Texts and Studies redresses the balance. It highlights the various phases of Latin-into-Hebrew translations and considers their disparity in time, place, and motivations. Special emphasis is put on the singular role of the translations of Latin medical and philosophical literature. Volume One: Studies, offers 18 studies and Volume Two: Texts in Contexts, includes editions and analyses of hitherto unpublished texts of medieval Latin-into-Hebrew translations. Both volumes are available separately or together as a set. This groundbreaking work is indispensable for any scholar interested in the history of medieval philosophic and scientific thought in Hebrew, Latin, and Arabic in relationship to the vicissitudes of Jewish-Christian relations.

The Bahir by Aryeh Kaplan Pdf

The Bahir is one of the oldest and most influential of all classical Kabbalah texts. Until the publication of the Zohar, the Bahir was the most widely quoted primary source of Kabbalistic teachings. The Bahir is quoted in every major book on Kabbalah, the earliest being the Raavad's commentary on Sefer Yetzirah, and it is cited numerous times by Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman (Ramban) in his commentary on the Torah. It is also quoted many times in the Zohar. It was first published around 1176 by the Provence school of Kabbalists; the first printed edition appeared in Amsterdam in 1651. The name Bahir is derived from the first verse quoted in the text (Job 37:21), "And now they do not see light, it is brilliant (Bahir) in the skies." It is also called the "Midrash of Rabbi Nehuniah ben HaKana," particularly by the Ramban. The reason might be that Rabbi Nehuniah's name is at the very beginning of the book, but most Kabbalists actually attribute the Bahir to him and his school. Some consider it the oldest kabbalistic text ever written. Although the Bahir is a fairly small book, some 12,000 words in all, it was very highly esteemed among those who probed its mysteries. Rabbi Judah Chayit, a prominent fifteenth-century Kabbalist, writes, "Make this book a crown for your head." Much of the text is very difficult to understand, and Rabbi Moshe Cordevero (1522-1570), head of the Safed school of Kabbalah, says, "The words of this text are bright (Bahir) and sparkling, but their brilliance can blind the eye." One of the most important concepts revealed in the Bahir is that of the Ten Sefirot, and careful analysis of these discussions yields much of what will be found in later kabbalistic works, as well as their relation to anthropomorphism and the reason for the commandments. Also included is a discussion of reincarnation, or Gilgul, an interpretation of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, the Thirty-two Paths of Wisdom, and the concept of Tzimtzum.

The Jews of Kurdistan by Ora Shwartz-Be'eri,Muzeʼon Yiśraʼel (Jerusalem) Pdf

Kurdish Jews, like so many Jewish populations, carried to Israel their unique, ancient culture and ways of life. Finding, collecting, identifying, and preserving Kurdish artifacts are the means of understanding this remarkable aspect of the Israeli cultural melange. The roots and traditions of Kurdish Jewry have special meaning for second- and third-generation members of the Israeli-born Kurdish community, and serve as a bridge between generations and among related communities abroad. The Jews of Kurdistan is profusely illustrated with wonderful color and black and white photographs of Kurdish Jews at home, work, and leisure. It presents a comprehensive visual and written portrait of this people's rich heritage, history, religious and spiritual life, daily life, clothing, needlework, metalwork and jewelry, illuminated manuscripts, synagogues, and ceremonial and ritual objects. It includes striking paintings of Kurdish Jewish women, a table of common weaving patterns, a glossary, and a selected bibliography. In the two decades since the publication of the Hebrew edition of this seminal work, the culture of the Jews of Kurdistan has largely been integrated into mainstream Israeli culture, allowing Shwartz-Be'eri's study to resonate as an ever more important ethnographic and historical document.
