0500 Letters from a Ww Ii Combat Infantryman by Verdi Gilbertson Pdf

May 7, 1945 Well, the war ended today. Tomorrow is officially V - E Day! All is quiet on the western front. Thank our Almighty God that at last we have peace over here. We cant really be happy as long as we have boys fighting on the other side of the world but it is also a big step towards ending the war over there too. We hope and pray that it ends soon. It looked like the 4th of July here tonight. The French civilians are shooting up flares and rockets of all colors. The soldiers are not celebrating very much though. The order to Cease Firing has come. I just cant help but thinking of our buddies who were left behind on the battlefields and never will hear the order.

A Letter Marked Free by Robert Lynch Pdf

A Letter Marked Free is the true story of a young combat soldier on the battlefield in World War II as told through his letters home to his family. The letters powerfully portray life on the front lines and the vivid accounts reveal the intense hardships endured for the cause of freedom. Bob Lynch was nineteen and living in Rye, NY, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 3rd Infantry Division as a combat rifleman, light machine-gunner, and mortarman. Bob was wounded and missing in action (MIA) behind enemy lines for over 10 days. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman Badge, along with many other honors. He participated in first-wave amphibious assault landings on Anzio, Italy, and St. Tropez, France, and accumulated an incredible 350 days in frontline combat. Bob was awarded the French Legion of Honor in January 2007 in recognition and gratitude for his role in the liberation of France. He received France's highest decoration "for outstanding valor and service during WWII." Previously, he had been awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palm twice and coveted fourragere. Experience living conditions in a foxhole, go on patrol behind enemy lines, cross minefields, hold your buddy as his life ebbs away, wade through icy water in the dead of winter, and crawl on your belly directly into machine-gun fire. Witness the pent-up emotions as U.S. soldiers free one French town after another. Hear church bells chime their message of freedom and watch people pour into the streets. Drink wine, laugh, dance, hug, and cry with them. Realize that you probably won't make it home alive and pray to God and your guardian angel every day that you do. Read the chilling letters of a combat infantryman soldier in WWII who continuously faced death and survived. This is Bob's courageous story.

Weapons of War by Robert E. Wright Pdf

Weapons of War has given me the opportunity to tell my Vietnam story and how it affected me, my fiancée, and my family. This is to give my family a written record of my service to my country and to thank the United States Army for its role in shaping my character and developing me into a responsible leader—ready and equipped to take on any challenge or mission. In other words, helping me to be all that I can be. And this is to finally tell my story of how the army took a raw recruit and turned him into a trained combat soldier and proven leader.

Letters from the Greatest Generation by Howard H. Peckham,Shirley A. Snyder Pdf

A collection of personal letters from overseas that reveal in day-to-day detail what it was like to serve in World War II. Recounting victory and defeat, love and loss, this is a remarkable and frank collection of World War II letters penned by American men and women serving overseas. Here, the hopes and dreams of the greatest generation fill each page, and their voices ring loud and clear. “It’s all part of the game but it’s bloody and rough,” writes one soldier to his wife. “Wearing two stripes now and as proud as an old cat with five kittens,” remarks another. Yet, as many countries rejoiced on V-E Day, this book reveals that soldiers were “too tired and sad to celebrate.” Filled with the everyday thoughts of these fighters, the letters are by turns heartbreaking and amusing, revealing and frightening. While visiting a German concentration camp, one man wrote, “I don’t like Army life but I’m glad we are here to stop these atrocities.” Meanwhile, in another letter a soldier quips, “I know lice don’t crawl so I figured they were fleas.” A fitting tribute to all veterans, this book brings the experience of war—its dramatic horrors, its dreary hardships, its desperate hope for a better future—to vivid life. “An intimate portrait of the mundane and remarkable, of heroism and terror, of friendship and loss . . . Timely, compelling, and important reading.”—Matthew L. Basso, author of Men at Work

Combat History of the Second Infantry Division in World War II by , U.S. Army Pdf

First published just a year after the end of the war, this is the story of the Second Infantry Division in World War II. It is the story of innumerable acts of fortitude and courage, of individual sacrifice and devotion to duty under fire, by a fighting division which has served with honor in two world wars. “Closely following actual combat operations, brief editions of our participation in World War II were published. With the passage of time, the need for a more authentic and comprehensive history of this period has become evident. This book is designed to meet that need. “This history shows that from D+1 to V-E Day our Division, in the face of repeated fanatical enemy action, was employed constantly as a spearhead shock division, and that in this role it maintained unblemished its proud record of never having failed to take its objective nor of having relinquished ground so gained. During operations we were concerned with our immediate task. Now in the light of subsequent events and broader perspective, the importance to the nation and to our army of our successes becomes increasingly evident.”—W. M. Robertson, Major-General, U.S. Army

Letters from Ralph by Lee and Bonnie Meier Pdf

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II. In this collection of letters, you'll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context. The letters are amazing for many reasons, including how calm and composed Ralph always sounded even when fighting was fierce. As a captain of a field artillery unit, he was in constant combat status from Utah Beach in Normandy to the Greater Reich. You'll be thrilled with this primary account from a soldier who participated in numerous firsts: Ralph was a member of the first American heavy artillery unit to come ashore in Normandy, and his unit was the first to fire during critical battles. Despite the bloodshed, faith and love shine through the turmoil in Letters from Ralph.

Keeping the Lights on for Ike by Rebecca Daniels Pdf

Most people don’t realize that during the war in Europe in the 1940s, it took an average of six support soldiers to make the work of four combat soldiers possible. Most of what’s available in the literature tends toward combat narratives, and yet the support soldiers had complex and unique experiences as well. This book is based on personal correspondence, and it is primarily a memoir that creates a picture of the day-to-day realities of an individual soldier told in his own words [as much as he could tell under the wartime rules of censorship, that is] as well as giving insight into what it was actually like to be an American soldier during WWII. It explores the experiences of a non-combat Army utilities engineer working in a combat zone during the war in Europe and takes the protagonist from basic training through various overseas assignments—in this case to England, North Africa, and Italy as a support soldier under Eisenhower and his successors at Allied Force Headquarters. It also includes some reflections about his life after returning to Oregon when the war was over. The soldier involved is Captain Harold Alec Daniels [OSU, Class of 1939, ROTC] and most of the letters were written to his wife, Mary Daniels [attended U of O in the late 1930s]. They are the author's parents, and she inherited the letter collection, photos, and all other primary source materials after her mother’s death in 2006.
