Sprawling Cities and Our Endangered Public Health by Stephen Verderber Pdf

Sprawl is an unsustainable pattern of growth that threatens to undermine the health of communities globally. It has been a dominant mid-to-late twentieth century growth pattern in developed countries and in the twenty-first century has shown widespread signs of proliferation in India, China, and other growing countries. The World Health Organization cites sprawl for its serious adverse public health consequences for humans and ecological habitats. The many adverse impacts of sprawl on the health of individuals, communities, and biological ecosystems are well documented. Architects have been rightly criticized for failing to grasp the aesthetic and functional challenge to create buildings and places that mitigate sprawl while simultaneously promoting healthier, active lifestyles in neighbourhoods and communities. Sprawling Cities and Our Endangered Public Health examines the past and present role of architecture in relation to the public health consequences of unmitigated sprawl and the ways in which it threatens our future. Topics examined include the role of twentieth century theories of architecture and urbanism and their public health ramifications, examples of current unsustainable practices, design considerations for the creation of health-promoting architecture and landscape urbanism, a critique of recent case studies of sustainable alternatives to unchecked sprawl, and prognostications for the future. Architects, public health professionals, landscape architects, town planners, and a broad range of policy specialists will be able to apply the methods and tools presented here to counter unmitigated sprawl and to create architecture that promotes active, healthier lifestyles. Stephen Verderber is an internationally respected evidence-based researcher/practitioner/educator in the emerging, interdisciplinary field of architecture, health, and society. This, his latest book on the interactions between our buildings, our cities and our health, is an invaluable reference source for everyone concerned with sustainable architecture and landscape urbanism.

Creative Design in Industry and Architecture by G. Berkin,O. Kucukerman, Halic University Faculty of Architecture, Turkey Pdf

Covering the topics of architecture and industrial design Creative Design in Industry and Architecture argues that the discourse on design criteria for both professions share many similarities. It is not intended to be prescriptive, but is rather the outcome of a detailed design analysis of the works of a number of industrial and architectural designers. The authors sought to compare the cultural outcomes of vernacular design in an attempt to show that the design process does not need to be difficult or complicated. This book seeks to present a critical assessment of design processes which achieve innovation in the fields of both architectural and industrial disciplines. The book is therefore about creativity, design strategies and innovative understanding. With decades of academic experience, the authors are keen on the idea that creativity can be taught. They wrote this book from an ongoing pedagogical need to show students that the creative palette has a wide range. Case studies and their related theory which support this view are included within the chapters. The book also unveils the design dilemma; how design can become complicated when surrounded with intricate problems although it is the sum of simple solutions. Common theories and practices are exposed within the two disciplines through observation, analysis, experiment and reflection to discuss and gain insight. Both creative and practical approaches are analysed by making a historical study followed by the fundamentals reflecting the current situation and practical applications of the architectural and industrial design principles outlined in an extensive collection of examples. To educators this book is instructive, to the students deductive, to designers inspiring.

The New 100 Houses X 100 Architects by Robyn Beaver Pdf

Collection of 100 contemporary designer homes by 100 individual architects from around the world. Both an object of beauty itself and valuable source of inspiration. 'The New 100 Houses x 100 Architects' is a celebration of diversity. Satisfying our natural and abiding curiosity about how other people live, and our endless quest to improve our own homes, this superb volume showcases architectural trends, provides insight into vernacular residential architecture, and is a rich source of ideas for every house designer- professional or armchair. Many of the houses portrayed in this book turn conventional notions of appearance and design upside down in their quest for perfection, while many reflect the emerging trend toward sustainable design while proving energy efficiency and style are not mutually exclusive concepts. The 100 houses featured, (designed by 100 different architects) range from deceptively simple to over-the-top gorgeous. Among the awe-inspiring projects in this book are contemporary houses slotted into traditional settings, such as a modern project on a cobbled street in Ljubljana, Slovenia; a utilitarian structure nestled in a vineyard in pastoral New Zealand; a concrete polyhedron incised into a minuscule spot in the Tokyo metropolis; and a house on the Indian Ocean in Mozambique, whose colours contrast against the azure blues of sea and sky. AUTHOR: Robyn Beaver has previously edited '21st Century Houses, 150 of the World's Best Houses, 100 of the World's Best Houses' and 'Another 100 of the World's Best Houses'. 691 col., 150 b/w

SITELESS by Francois Blanciak Pdf

An attempt to free architecture from site and program constraints and to counter the profusion of ever bigger architecture books with ever smaller content. Some may call it the first manifesto of the twenty-first century, for it lays down a new way to think about architecture. Others may think of it as the last architectural treatise, for it provides a discursive container for ideas that would otherwise be lost. Whatever genre it belongs to, SITELESS is a new kind of architecture book that seems to have come out of nowhere. Its author, a young French architect practicing in Tokyo, admits he “didn't do this out of reverence toward architecture, but rather out of a profound boredom with the discipline, as a sort of compulsive reaction.” What would happen if architects liberated their minds from the constraints of site, program, and budget? he asks. The result is a book that is saturated with forms, and as free of words as any architecture book the MIT Press has ever published. The 1001 building forms in SITELESS include structural parasites, chain link towers, ball bearing floors, corrugated corners, exponential balconies, radial facades, crawling frames, forensic housing—and other architectural ideas that may require construction techniques not yet developed and a relation to gravity not yet achieved. SITELESS presents an open-ended compendium of visual ideas for the architectural imagination to draw from. The forms, drawn freehand (to avoid software-specific shapes) but from a constant viewing angle, are presented twelve to a page, with no scale, order, or end to the series. After setting down 1001 forms in siteless conditions and embryonic stages, Blanciak takes one of the forms and performs a “scale test,” showing what happens when one of these fantastic ideas is subjected to the actual constraints of a site in central Tokyo. The book ends by illustrating the potential of these shapes to morph into actual building proportions.
