Challenging Reflections on the Christian Life by J.L. Moore Pdf

When is the last time you were discouraged in your relationship with God? were distracted by a crying infant during a church service? shared the gospel with an unbeliever? heard someone say they rededicated their life to Christ? heard an intense conversation about sports among Christian men? were equipped by your pastor to present and defend the gospel? If your experience is similar to most Christians, you have probably never spent much time reflecting on the issues above as they pertain to the seriousness of the Christian life. Challenging Reflections on the Christian Life covers topics that include raising children in the church, evangelism, apologetics, men and sports, the concept of rededication, the pastors primary responsibility, infants in the sanctuary, knowing God, and much more. This book is designed to encourage you to give deep contemplation to the all-too-common experiences encountered in the Christian life and lead you to an awakened sense of reverence for God and passion for the truth. Whether you are a new Christian or a seasoned pastor, this book will cause you to rethink much of what you see in your life and in your church. This book is inspiring, encouraging, and challenging. The author carefully and faithfully handles the Scriptures and applies them to our lives. Every Christian will profit from reading this book. Science and Religion: Fifty Years After Vatican II by Kenan Osborne,Ki Wook Min Pdf

In the past one hundred years, two major realities have changed both science and religion. The world of science has been enriched by quantum physics, the computation of the age of the universe, archaeological data in the Middle East, and a scientific stress on historical writing. The world of religion has been enriched by the establishment of the World Council of Churches and the Second Vatican Council. In the past fifty years, major scientists and major religious leaders have met together again and again. In the past fifty years, religious leaders from Christianity, Islam, and Judaism have held a number of thought-provoking conferences. In this volume, these gatherings are reviewed and evaluated. Two major religious problems have challenged the science-religion discussions, namely, which God should the scientists agree on, the Trinitarian God, Allah, or Yahweh? Which history of the universe sponsored by these three religions should scientists be looking for? This volume raises questions and suggests some preliminary forms of serious discussion.

The Good Life by Robert Waldinger,Marc Schulz Pdf

The stronger our relationships, the more likely we are to live happy, satisfying, and overall healthier lives. In fact, the Harvard Study of Adult Development reveals that the strength of our connections with others can predict the health of both our bodies and our brains as we go through life."--Provided by publisher.

9/11 in American Culture by Norman K. Denzin,Yvonna S. Lincoln Pdf

In response to the events following September 11, 2001, a number of leading cultural studies and interpretive qualitative researchers write from their own experiences and hearts. These essays by noted scholars Kellner, Fine, McLaren, Richardson, Denzin, Giroux and others, were written in crisis within days and weeks of September 11. The immediacy of their writing is refreshing and reflects the varied emotional and critical responses that bring meaning to this event. From the poetic to the personal, the theoretical to the historical, these contributions represent intelligent and reflective responses to crises. This collection of essays allows the contributors to tell us how they made sense of these tragic events and predicts what the place of the humanities and the social sciences might hold in an age of terror. The articles were originally published in journals "Qualitative Inquiry" and "Cultural Studies/Critical Methodologies".

Virtue as Consent to Being by Phil Zylla Pdf

Virtue theory has become an important development in Christian ethics. Efforts are made in this volume to bring pastoral theology into conversation with these developments. This book probes the philosophical theology of Jonathan Edwards, who proposed that virtue is a form of beauty defined as "consent to being." This leads to the notion of compassion as ontological consent. Since language is the vehicle by which our experiences are conveyed, the book probes the issue of how moral vision is expressed in "experience-near" language through parable, poem, and lament. Moral vision is articulated most adequately through such language, and finding it is a kind of quest The last chapter is a proposal for a mature pastoral theology of virtue as an expansion of Edwards's concept of "consent to being" from the vantage point of pastoral theology. A dynamic vision of virtue requires some connection between the experience of suffering and the inward striving toward the greatest good. The essence of virtue can be best understood, from a pastoral theological perspective, as the relational dynamic of "suffering with" another human being.
