110 Turn-of-the-Century House Designs by R. W. Shoppell Pdf

With its wealth of representative styles and its emphasis on craftsmanship and exterior design, the late-Victorian era ranks among the halcyon days in American house building. This survey of the era's traditional designs—reproduced from a rare edition—offers a complete and authentic guide to faithful restorations or re-creations. A New York City-based firm prepared and published this catalog in 1897, selecting the very best models from more than 12,000 houses built from their plans. Designed with style, utility, and low cost of construction uppermost in mind, it features hundreds of illustrations, including perspective drawings and floor plans. Details of interior and exterior materials and potential modifications include remarks on the particular amenities of each house, plus estimates of building costs. Antique collectors, home hobbyists, and fans of traditional design will find this volume a valuable reference and an endless source of inspiration.

1000 Turn-of-the-Century Houses by Herbert C. Chivers Pdf

A remarkable presentation of the "finished ideas of a practicing architect of high rank in his profession," this early-twentieth-century showcase of homes features a wide range of designs from a Midwest master. Reproduced from a rare edition, the work features a splendid array of dwellings, from cottages and bungalows to sprawling mansions. Each house is meticulously illustrated and accompanied by complete floor plans. "A poorly planned house is usually more expensive than a modern practical plan," according to the author, architect Herbert C. Chivers. Combining "modern methods" with attractive but modestly priced plans, Chivers promoted his business with sketches of stylish homes, accompanied by brief captions stating dimensions, prices, and occasional suggestions for modifications. This reprint of his complete guide to domestic architecture of the early 1900s constitutes a valuable resource for home hobbyists, architecture students and professionals, as well as antique collectors.

Georgian Architectural Designs and Details by Abraham Swan Pdf

Among the 18th century's most influential architectural designers and writers, Abraham Swan defined many conventions of English rococo detail. This reprint of an extremely rare and classic stylebook, compiled by the English architect nearly 250 years ago, provides outstanding examples of Palladian and Georgian architecture and design in colonial America and England. Included are floor plans, detailed elevations, and drawings for cornices, mouldings, and other decorative elements that demonstrate Swan's unique style. Designed, in his words, more for "Gentlemen of moderate Fortunes than of great Estates who may be inclined to build Houses," Swan's designs featured such aesthetic touches as double staircases, elegant entryways, and two or three floors with spacious galleries, salons, and dressing rooms. Invaluable to architectural historians and designers, this splendid stylebook will delight devotees of early English Georgian and American domestic architecture and interior design, cultural historians, artists, and craftworkers.

Architecture and the Image at the Turn of the 21st Century by Sanja Rodeš Pdf

This book examines architecture, image, and media relationships as productive for architecture and architectural discourses. By arguing that the relationships between architecture and media cannot be dismissed via linear criticism of architecture and media or image, these relations are instead seen as a part of a sphere (a mediasphere) of complex relationships. In lieu of anything like a consensus on the contemporary condition of architecture (referring to the late twentieth and the twenty-first centuries), the starting point of this book is that the relationships between architecture, media, and images continue to multiply, owing to continuous technological advancements. Contemporary architecture considered in this book is related to the selected circumstances of high visibility, where architectural images are propelled into visibility and conflated with non-architectural images. This takes architecture outside of architectural-only discourse and into the public realm. By granting higher visibility to both the architectural images and architecture in the public realm, architecture can also be influenced by the various perceptions of the general public and can enter public consciousness via non-architectural media. With increased visibility, architecture’s far-reaching presence calls for more structured analysis of its nature and potential. As the analysed architecture in this book is associated with the discourses outside of architecture (some of which relate to terrorism, natural disaster, and branding and consumption), the limits of contemporary architectural discipline are questioned and extended. This book is written for academics and students in architectural history, theory, and criticism, particularly those interested in visual and media studies.
