In August 1844 a heavily-laden party led by Captain Charles Sturt set out from Adelaide to head into the unexplored vastness of central Australia. هذا الكتاب قصة رحلة إلى ترتاري والتبت قام بها في صائفة سنة 1844 راهبان فرنسيان كانا أوّل من يصل إلى التبت من الأوروبيين. ولئن كانت الدوافع الأولى لهذه الرحلة دينية تبشيرية في البداية، فإنّ الزائرين لم يلبثا أن اندمجا في حياة الأقوام والقبائل التي حطا بينها الرحال وعاشا مدة من الزمن. فجاء هذا الكتاب غنيّاً بمعلومات تاريخية وحضارية وأنثروبولوجية جمّة. بيد أنّ طرافة الكتاب هي كذلك في أسلوبه القصصي الشائق وفي تلاحق أحداثه وهول المغامرات التي عاشها بطلا الرحلة، وفي دقة وصف الكاتب ما مرّا به في طريقهما ومقامهما من غرائب الطبيعة وعجائب العمران. وعلى هذا النحو يكون لقراءة هذا الكتاب فائدتان: التعرّف إلى حياة أهل التبت من جهة، والقيام من جهة أخرى، برحلة تجوب السهوب والجبال والأودية والصحارى القاسية وسط الثلوج والصقيع، فيتسنّى للقارئ أن يعيش مغامرة يعسر على المرء أن يعيشها في الواقع. ولا شكّ في أنّ ترجمة هذا الكتاب إلى العربية تسدّ اليوم النقص الفادح الذي تشكو منه المكتبة العربية في المؤلّفـات المتعلّقـة بوصـف الصين وترتاري والتبت فـي القرن التاسع عشر، رغم عظم الصلات التي جمعت الحضارة العربية الإسلامية بشعوب هذه المناطق قديماً.
