Social Dimension of 1992 by Beverly Springer Pdf

Many books and articles have been written about the importance of the 1992 initiative of the European Community for the international economy. However, the 320 million consumers who are also citizens and voters in the twelve member states of the EC must be convinced they will benefit from a more powerful EC. Many are employees who will find their work situation vastly altered by the creation of a single internal market. Until now the European Community has had little impact on the daily lives of ordinary Europeans, as national governments provide social assistance and protection. Now, that role of national governments is threatened, and Europeans will increasingly look to the EC for social policies. The EC will become a reality in their daily lives. This book discusses the social dimension of the 1992 initiative. It deals with both the substance and politics of the social policy, explaining both the relevance and controversial aspects of the proposed social policies for the future of European integration. Based on extensive use of primary sources and interviews, the book begins with a quick review of the history and organization of the EC, discusses major developments in employment policies, and examines current developments in social policy. The work will be of interest to those interested in international management and international human resource management as well as to political scientists.

Climate Change 1995: Economic and Social Dimensions of Climate Change by Hoe-sŏng Yi,Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Working Group III. Pdf

The consequences of climate change for society are analysed in this landmark assessment from the IPCC. This book assesses the available knowledge on the many issues that society has to face, including the international decision-making framework; applicability to climate change of techniques for assessing costs and benefits; the significant social costs of projected climate change; and the economic assessment of policy instruments to combat climate change, nationally and internationally. Some important conclusions of this Second Assessment Report indicate that 10 to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in most countries can be reduced at negative or zero cost - 'no regrets' measures. Also, the literature indicates that climate change will cause aggregate net damage, which provides an economic rationale for going beyond 'no regrets' measures. It also indicates that a portfolio of mitigation, adaptation and research measures is a sound strategy for addressing climate change given the remaining uncertainties. This report speaks directly to the issues that are faced by the many countries committed to limit emissions of greenhouse gases by the year 2000, and currently negotiating actions to be taken beyond that date. Will be of great value to the international community of policymakers interested in the consequences of climate change, as well as to economists, social and natural scientists.

Euro-Politics by Alberta Sbragia Pdf

Europe 1992, the market integration of the twelve European Community (EC) member states, has attracted widespread attention as an economic project of enormous importance. But though journalists and scholars have focused much attention on the economic aspects of Europe 1992, the program's impact on the governance of the EC has been largely ignored—even though the creation of a single market is intimately linked to changes in governance. With each member state having a very different institutional structure, the variation within the EC is far greater than that found in federations such as the United States. Though this variety adds to the complexity of consensus building among the members, it allows effective representation of diverse national interests and needs, thus making the EC a very strong, competitive force. To negotiate effectively with this "new" Community, international policymakers will need a greater understanding of how the EC will operate in the wake of the Maastricht Summit. Euro-Politics examines various aspects of the institutional dynamics of the EC and offers important insight into policy making within the Community. David Cameron discusses the origin of the 1992 program and examines the role of the nation-state in the Community. Guy Peters surveys the "political" and executive institutions, while Martin Shapiro discusses the European Court of Justice and the evolution of judicial review within the Community. John Woolley examines the European Monetary System and the movement toward the "EuroFed," Gary Marks studies the importance of the Regional Funds for both the EC and selected member states, and Peter Lange discusses the Social Charter and its implications for both employers and unions. Alberta Sbragia concludes with an analysis of institutional dynamics and policymaking with the Community in light of the new questions they raise for traditional notions of governance.

The Social Dimensions of Science by Ernan McMullin Pdf

In recent decades, it has been argued that the social dimensions of science are more nearly constitutive of science, both as activity and as product. The ten essays in this volume examine the historical origins of this new emphasis on the social dimensions of science, which has its roots in Thomas Kuhn's claim that The choice between competing paradigms proves to be a choice between incompatible modes of community life.

An Enlarged Europe by Louis Albrechts,Sally Hardy,Mark Hart,Anastasios Katos Pdf

The political and economic geography of Europe is changing - the European Community is expanding its boundaries towards EFTA and is resuming a closer association with Central and Eastern European regions engaged in radical restructuring. As EC integration accelerates there is the prospect of intensified inter-regional competition. This book, divided into five parts, examines in detail the changes and the challenge for policy makers. The introduction draws out the central themes of the book, addressing EC regional performance and future indicators, the enlargement and changing map of Europe and the implications for the EC of Eastern European changes. The second part deals with EC issues, particularly focusing on the economic and spatial impact of European integration. Part 3 addresses Eastern European issues, and Part 4 covers the Peripheral Regions. The final part is devoted to a policy debate, concluding with a policy agenda for the forthcoming decade.
