Same Energy, More Power by Asian Development Bank Pdf

Energy efficiency is often defined as delivered energy service per unit of energy supplied into a system. Supply-side energy efficiency refers to decreasing energy losses in the supply chain, for improved performance in the production and delivery of electricity and heat. Demand- side energy efficiency (DSEE) is achieved through consuming less energy for the same level of service, for improved efficiencies at the point of final energy use. DSEE, in particular, offers vast potential to meet regional energy needs in Asia, yet supply-side strategies tend to be prioritized as a focus of investment and planning. Over the past decade, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has succeeded in quickly scaling up its investment in energy efficiency and the development of renewable resources within its developing member countries through ADB’s Clean Energy Program. This report examines prospects to accelerate lending and investment for DSEE in Asia, in light of trends that are driving energy use and policy and regulatory change in developing countries. Such efforts can help realize the full potential of DSEE as a least-cost, low-carbon resource for energy security, environmental protection, and sustainable and inclusive growth benefiting all Asians.

A decade after it took form, the Clean Energy Program of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was assessed according to the indicators set out in the 2009 Energy Policy. Drawing from hundreds of clean energy and energy access projects approved by ADB in 2008–2018, this review determines how far the bank has gone toward achieving its targets vis-à-vis baseline data from 2005 to 2007. It also explores what must to be done further in light of the new approach under ADB’s Strategy 2030 and the global goals in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Sustainable Energy for All Status Report by Asian Development Bank Pdf

The Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative is the global effort rallying action towards a transformation in the energy sector by the year 2030. With targets to increase energy use, expand energy efficiency, and ensure energy access for all, SE4All's priorities are tied closely to the challenges of developing Asia and the Pacific, which is confronting issues of energy sustainability, security, and widespread energy poverty. In the interest of combining efforts and resources to meet the challenge, the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific have partnered to act as the leading organizations for the SE4All Regional Hub for Asia and the Pacific. Together, they are supporting actions among developing countries in the region that will put them on track to transform their energy sectors, in line with SE4All. This report summarizes the initial activities of the Regional Hub, and contextualizes the challenges in Asia and the Pacific with the global efforts to reach the 2030 targets.

Handbook of Green Finance by Jeffrey D. Sachs,Wing Thye Woo,Naoyuki Yoshino,Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary Pdf

This handbook deals with various financial instruments, policies, and strategies in a policy-oriented approach for financing green energy projects. Recently, global investment in renewables and energy efficiency has declined, and there is a risk that it will slow further, Clearly, fossil fuels still dominate energy investments. This trend could threaten the expansion of green energy needed to meet energy security, climate, and clean-air goals. Several developed and developing economies are still following pro-coal energy policies. The extra CO2 generated from new coal-fired power plants could more than eliminate any reductions in emissions made by other nations. Finance is the engine of development of infrastructural projects, including energy projects. By providing several thematic and country chapters, this handbook explains that if we plan to achieve sustainable development goals, we need to create opportunities for new green projects and scale up the financing of investments that furnish environmental benefits. New financial instruments and policies such as green bonds, green banks, carbon market instruments, fiscal policy, green central banking, fintech, and community-based green funds are among the chief components that make up green finance. Naoyuki Yoshino is Dean, Asian Development Bank Institute and Professor Emeritus, Keio University. Jeffery Sachs is Director, Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University. Wing Thye Woo is Professor of Economics, U.C. Davis. Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary is Assistant Professor, Waseda University.

The main purpose of the publication is to call on policymakers in Asia and the Pacific for urgent actions to transition national energy sectors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly Goal 7. The energy sector transition is the only way to address the sizeable energy deficit which impede progress in energy access in a number of member countries. It will also address gaps between current commitments under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change and lack of coherent energy strategic and policy frameworks and actions held back progress of SDG7.
