50+ Library Services by Diantha Dow Schull Pdf

Adults over the age of 55 constitute some of the most engaged and frequent users of public libraries. They may also be the most misunderstood. As Baby Boomers continue to swell their ranks, behavior and trends in older adults have changed dramaticaly in the last ten years--and most literature on this topic is hopelessly out of date. Schull, co-editor of Boomers and Beyond, helps improve the situation by * Presenting over a dozen case studies of public library programs for older adults, spotlightin best practices that can be applied at other institutions * Detailing a four-year program, presented by the Lifelong Access Libraries National Leadership Institute, that trains librarians to meet the needs of people over the age of 50 * Discussing issues such as creativity, health, financial planning, heritage adn planning, and intergenerational activities from the over-50 perspective, laying out the trends and implications for libraries * Including samples of materials that illustrate new approaches to policies, staffing, programs, services, partnerships, and publicity Containing the keys to reshaping library services for older adults, Schull's book needs to be in the collection of every public library.

Library Services and Incarceration by Jeanie Austin Pdf

As part of our mission to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all library patrons, our profession needs to come to terms with the consequences of mass incarceration, which have saturated the everyday lives of people in the United States and heavily impacts Black, Indigenous, and people of color; LGBTQ people; and people who are in poverty. Jeanie Austin, a librarian with San Francisco Public Library's Jail and Reentry Services program, helms this important contribution to the discourse, providing tools applicable in a variety of settings. This text covers practical information about services in public and academic libraries, and libraries in juvenile detention centers, jails, and prisons, while contextualizing these services for LIS classrooms and interdisciplinary scholars. It powerfully advocates for rethinking the intersections between librarianship and carceral systems, pointing the way towards different possibilities. This clear-eyed text begins with an overview of the convergence of library and information science and carceral systems within the United States, summarizing histories of information access and control such as book banning, and the ongoing work of incarcerated people and community members to gain more access to materials; examines the range of carceral institutions and their forms, including juvenile detention, jails, immigration detention centers, adult prisons, and forms of electronic monitoring; draws from research into the information practices of incarcerated people as well as individual accounts to examine the importance of information access while incarcerated; shares valuable case studies of various library systems that are currently providing both direct and indirect services, including programming, book clubs, library spaces, roving book carts, and remote reference; provides guidance on collection development tools and processes; discusses methods for providing reentry support through library materials and programming, from customized signage and displays to raising public awareness of the realities of policing and incarceration; gives advice on supporting community groups and providing outreach to transitional housing; includes tips for building organizational support and getting started, with advice on approaching library management, creating procedures for challenges, ensuring patron privacy, and how to approach partners who are involved with overseeing the functioning of the carceral facility; and concludes with a set of next steps, recommended reading, and points of reflection.

Sustainable Online Library Services and Resources by Mou Chakraborty,Samantha Harlow,Heather Moorefield-Lang Pdf

COVID-19 shifted library services and resources; this book includes narratives of lessons learned and sustainable practices to prepare educators and librarians for any challenges that might arise in the future. All different types of libraries (academic, public, special, and school) were impacted by the pandemic, and librarians learned valuable lessons about how to shift and transition in a challenging time. In this informative book, librarians, instructional designers, educators, and faculty from all over the world write about how they pivoted services and resources online to continue to serve patrons during a pandemic and beyond, as well as which services and programs will be sustainable and scalable. Online delivery of programs and services allows librarians to respond to many different situations, emergencies, and challenges, and this book is a record of the lessons that librarians learned and the practices they'll implement in the future based on their experiences with COVID-19. Sustainable Online Library Services and Resources showcases a diverse range of perspectives on how online learning has changed and grown with a focus on what library services and resources are here to stay.

Library Service to African Americans in Kentucky, from the Reconstruction Era to the 1960s by Reinette F. Jones Pdf

Although the majority of libraries in the state of Kentucky did not offer services to African Americans between the years 1860 and 1960, public libraries did employ them. The Louisville Public Library, a leader in the development of library management and education from 1905 to 1925, began in 1912 offering classes to train African American women to be librarians in segregated public library branches that were opening in the South. In 1925, an academic library program was developed for African Americans at the Hampton Institute in Virginia to continue the work that began in Kentucky. This movement culminated with Helen F. Frye's becoming the first African-American to graduate with a master of science degree in library science from the University of Kentucky Library School in 1963. This work moves from the provision by Berea College of the first library services to a fully integrated student body in 1866 through the integration of the state's only accredited library science program at the University of Kentucky in 1949 to the civil rights initiatives of the 1960s. Also addressed are the interconnectedness of libraries and societal events and how one affected the other.
