A Basic History of Lutheranism in America by Abdel Ross Wentz Pdf

"Lutheranism in America is a comprehensive history of the Lutheran church and the Lutheran people in the United States. This volume ... presents the historical facts and interprets the general course of events in such a way as to prevent the reader from losing the main thread in a mass of details. At the same time this work points the way toward advanced study. Beginning with the early Lutheran church in New Netherlands, the author shows the relationship between American culture and the Lutheran Church. He carefully presents the development of this church in the light of historical perspective, showing how the church and the nation were born in America at the same time, grew up side by side and developed by similar stages of progress. Dr. Wentz also shows how the Lutheran church in America is an integral and potent part of American Christianity, and its members a typical element of the American nation."--Jacket.

Lutherans in North America by Clifford E. Nelson Pdf

This book gives today's Lutherans a sense of heritage, identity and continuity, a sense of self-understanding. Readers will see themselves as part of a family. They can identify with the struggles, hopes, and frustrations of wave after wave of immigrants adapting to the strange new world of America and at the same time trying to preserve all they had known and loved and brought with them from the homeland. The genius of the entire volume is that it points beyond family memories to an ongoing and continuing life of which we and our children are a living part. Contributors: Theodore G. Tappert, Eugene Fevold, Fred W. Meuser, H. George Anderson, August R. Suelflow, and E. Clifford Nelson.

American Lutheranism (Vol. 1&2) by Friedrich Bente Pdf

"American Lutheranism" in 2 volumes is the record of how the Christian truth, restored by Luther, was preached and accepted, opposed and defended, corrupted and restored in the United States of America at various times, by various men, and in various synods and congregations. The authors main object was to record the principal facts regarding the doctrinal position occupied at various times, either by the different American Lutheran bodies themselves or by some of their representative men. The first volume deals with the early history of Lutheranism in America, while the second presents the history of the synods which in 1918 merged into the United Lutheran Church: the General Synod, the General Council, and the United Synod in the South.

But in spite of such a difference, the prospects for the union of American Lutherans are brighter to-day than ever before. All agree in recognizing the Bible as the sole source, rule and standard of faith, accept the Augsburg Confession in its historical sense, and are convinced that the Lutheran Church stands for the most perfect form of religion which has been revealed to us by history. We may mention as a symptom of reapproachment the moderate tone being observed in doctrinal discussions, and also the respectful treatment mutually accorded by the organs of opposing synods. 36. Review of the Extension of the Lutheran Church in America. The Lutheran Church began as a tiny plant. It had small beginnings in two localities: New York and Pennsylvania. Later we notice scattered settlements along the Atlantic Coast as far south as Georgia. Since immigration was largely directed to Pennsylvania, this state has ever recorded the strongest growth of Lutheran churches. In the beginning of the nineteenth century the stream of immigration, crossing the mountains, flowed toward the West, and resulted in strong Lutheran settlements, especially in Indiana and Ohio, where the descendants of Eastern Lutherans (New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia) established themselves. The great immigration of the nineteenth century flooded the country with German settlers. These filled the Eastern church, which had been losing ground by the anglicization of its members, formed new congregations and eventually covered the whole West. Finally the stream of immigration -- then largely composed of people who had settled in the United States -- was directed toward New England. Thus in course of time we find a...

Historical Dictionary of Lutheranism by Günther Gassmann,Mark W. Oldenburg Pdf

The Reformation of the 16th century was a complex and multifaceted political, social, cultural, and religious process. Most historians agree, however, that in the framework of this process it was the religious and theological efforts to reform and renew the late medieval church—decadent and irrelevant in many ways—that were the initiating forces that set a broad historical movement in motion. Among these reforming religious and theological forces, the Lutheran reform movement was the most important and influential one. It was the historical impact of the theological genius of the Wittenberg professor Martin Luther (1483-1546) that profoundly changed and shaped the face of Europe and beyond. Today, Lutheranism has become a worldwide communion of churches that stretches from Germany to Siberia, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, and Surinam. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Lutheranism presents information on major theological issues, historical developments of Lutheranism worldwide, Lutheran ecumenical and missionary involvement and activities, worship and liturgy, spirituality, social ethics, inter-religious and Jewish relations, Lutheranism and the arts, theology, and important representatives of Lutheranism. This is done through a detailed chronology, an introductory essay, an appendix of Lutheran Churches, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Lutheranism.

A Brief History of the Lutheran Church in America by J. L. Neve Pdf

In contemporary American Christianity, the history of the church is often neglected. While the churches of the Lutheran Reformation have not neglected their own historical roots in the sixteenth century, they have sometimes forgotten the unique history of the American Lutheran Church. In this monumental work, J.L. Neve gives an expansive history of the Lutheran Church in America through the beginning of the twentieth century. He introduces each of the major, and minor, American Synods, and outlines various differences in theology and polity. He also gives brief biographical information on all the significant figures in each American Synod. While Neve's own theological positions are made apparent in the book, he is fair and sympathetic to those with whom he disagrees. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of the Lutheran Church in the United States.
