Ornithology in Laboratory and Field by Olin Sewall Pettingill Pdf

Ornithology in Laboratory and Field is intended as an aid to ornithological study at the college or university level. Students who lack the background knowledge usually acquired during a course in general zoology or biology should keep it handy for ready reference a standard elementary text on the subject. This book contains extensive material for purely informational reading, possibly enough to supplant the need of an additional textbook. Its principal purpose still complies with the title of its predecessors for it is essentially a manual to guide and assist the student in direct observations. All twenty sections, except the last (""The Origin, Evolution, and Decrease of Birds""), suggest methods and provide instructions for studies; and all conclude with an extensive list of references, frequently annotated, for further information. The twenty sections of the book can be taken up in almost any order and some may be omitted without affecting the instructional value of the others. A feature of this new edition is an introduction to birds and ornithology, intended for reading at the beginning of a course. The purpose is twofold: to show the significance of birds for study and to give an overall preview of ornithology, the subject, with emphasis on its wide scope, how it is studied, and some of the continuing and exciting opportunities that it offers for investigation.

An Annotated Bibliography of Oregon Bird Literature Published Before 1935 by George A. Jobanek Pdf

This exhaustive, richly annotated resource fills an important gap in Oregon bird literature. George Jobanek has carefully searched dozens of early ornithological, scientific, and natural history journals and publications, from American Field to Zoe, for records of Oregon birds. Because of the rarity of many references and their inaccessibility to most readers, the author has provided annotations for each of the nearly two thousand entries. Jobanek conveys in a concise manner the salient points of each article and frequently quotes from the references, especially descriptions of abundance and range. In addition, many of the annotations include citing of recent references.By briefly describing each item, Jobanek reveals its usefulness for contemporary readers. References are organized by author and cross-indexed by species, county, key word, and year of publication. Key words such as behavior, conservation, distribution, migration, nesting, plumage, and taxonomy have been assigned to each entry to reflect the primary topic or theme of the Oregon material of the reference. A gazetteer identifies localities mentioned in the annotations. This bibliography is a valuable new resource for professional and informed amateur ornithologists, wildlife managers, ecologists, natural historians, librarians, and anyone interested in birds in the Pacific Northwest. Its references will offer researchers a base for future studies and allow readers a glimpse of an earlier, golden era in ornithology.

Modern American Environmentalists by George A. Cevasco,Richard P. Harmond Pdf

Modern American Environmentalists profiles the lives and contributions of nearly 140 major figures during the twentieth-century environmental movement. Included are iconic environmentalists such as Rachel Carson, E. O. Wilson, Gifford Pinchot, and Al Gore, and important but less expected names, including John Steinbeck and Allen Ginsberg. The entries recount how each individual became active in environmental conservation, detail his or her significant contributions, trace the influence of each on future efforts, and discuss the person's legacy. The individuals selected for the book displayed either an unparalleled commitment to the conservation, preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the natural environment or made a major contribution to the growth of environmentalism during its first century. With a foreword by environmental historian Everett I. Mendolsohn, a time line of key environmental events, a bibliography of groundbreaking works, and an index organized by specialization, this biographical encyclopedia is a handy and complete guide to the major people involved in the modern American environmental movement.
