A Biographical Index of British and Irish Botanists (Classic Reprint) by James Britten Pdf

Excerpt from A Biographical Index of British and Irish Botanists It is intended mainly as a guide to further information, and not as a bibliography or biography. We have been liberal in including all who have in any way contributed to the literature Of Botany, who have made scientific collections of plants, or have otherwise assisted directly in the progress of Botany, exclusive of pure Horticulture. We have not, as a rule, included those who were merely patrons of workers, or those known only as contributing small details to a local Flora. Dictionary Of British And Irish Botanists And Horticulturists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers by Ray Desmond Pdf

Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.

The Trees of Great Britain and Ireland by Henry John Elwes Pdf

Excerpt from The Trees of Great Britain and Ireland: Index, Etc In concluding our work there are a few points about which I think it advisable to add some explanatory remarks. First, with regard to its scope, it was intended at the outset to include only those trees which attain timber size in the British Isles. It was found, however, impossible in practice to draw a rigid line between the timber trees and the smaller trees, which like shrubs are cultivated for ornament or curiosity. In the case of genera, which comprise both large and small trees as well as shrubs, our treatment has not been logically uniform. All the species of oak in cultivation have been described in detail, because in this genus shrubs are of exceptional occurrence. On the other hand, only the larger maples have been the subject of separate articles, as it was evident that a brief notice would suffice for the shrubby species. In the case of genera of exceptional interest, as Pinus, Juniperus, Cephalotaxus, all the introduced species, even those of small size, have been treated in full. The keys for the identification of species are based upon the characters of the twigs, leaves, and buds, and not upon those of the owers and fruits, as has been usual in botanical works. The latter characters are Often not available in the case of trees, the determination of which may be required when they are. In the young state, or at some period of the year when flowers and fruit are not present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
