A Brief History of the Town of Glocester, Rhode Island by Elizabeth A. Perry Pdf

Excerpt from A Brief History of the Town of Glocester, Rhode Island: Preceded by a Sketch of the Territory While a Part of Providence In preparing the following pages, the author has been exceedingly desirous that a history of the town of Glocester might be presented in a connected form, from its first settlement. An effort has been made to state things accurately, and on good authority. It has been very difficult to ascertain dates in some instances. The sources whence the information is derived are various: Bartlett's Colonial Records; Schedules of the town presented yearly to the General Assembly; Town Records; old newspapers; private papers; reading of many books that had reference to town matters; travelling over the town, and information from elderly town's people. Glocester has furnished some citizens of high personal worth, and honor to other towns, states and countries. The Exchange Artist by Jane Kamensky Pdf

The riveting story of the country's first banking scandal in the first decades of the American republic This enthralling historical narrative of the birth of speculative capitalism in America opens in the 1790s when financial pioneer-turned-confidence-man Andrew Dexter, Jr. created a pyramid scheme founded on real estate speculation and the greed of banks, who freely printed the paper money he needed to finance the then tallest building in the United States-the Exchange Coffee House, a 153-room, seven-story colossus in downtown Boston. The story of Dexter's rise and eventual collapse offered an object lesson to the rising young nation, and presents striking parallels to the subprime mortgage meltdown and looming economic collapse of today.

For the People by Ronald P. Formisano Pdf

For the People offers a new interpretation of populist political movements from the Revolution to the eve of the Civil War and roots them in the disconnect between the theory of rule by the people and the reality of rule by elected representatives. Ron Formisano seeks to rescue populist movements from the distortions of contemporary opponents as well as the misunderstandings of later historians. From the Anti-Federalists to the Know-Nothings, Formisano traces the movements chronologically, contextualizing them and demonstrating the progression of ideas and movements. Although American populist movements have typically been categorized as either progressive or reactionary, left-leaning or right-leaning, Formisano argues that most populist movements exhibit liberal and illiberal tendencies simultaneously. Gendered notions of "manhood" are an enduring feature, yet women have been intimately involved in nearly every populist insurgency. By considering these movements together, Formisano identifies commonalities that belie the pattern of historical polarization and bring populist movements from the margins to the core of American history.

Glocester Rhode Island by Edna Whitaker Kent Pdf

In the first photographic history of Glocester, Rhode Island, Chepachet native Edna Whitaker Kent presents a remarkable collection of over 200 historic photographs never before available to the public. The many views of Glocester homes, streets, mills, farms, schools, people, and churches have been compiled from private collections to be published for the first time. The historic villages of Harmony, East Glocester, Spring Grove, Cherry Valley, West Glocester, Hawkins' Village, Clarkville, Williams' Mills, and Chepachet are all represented in this volume, which spans the period of time from 1826 to 1992. Two unique historical events are comprehensively illustrated: Dorr's Rebellion--during which two duly-elected Rhode Island governors vied for power--and the tragic shooting of one of North America's first elephants at Chepachet Bridge. In addition, Glocester, Rhode Island depicts the community's proud history of legendary pageants, gatherings, Old Home Days, and parades, which have attracted visitors to the region for many years.
