A Catalogue and Key to the Centipedes (Chilopoda) of Bulgaria by Pavel Stoev Pdf
Relevant information concerning the distribution, habitat and altitude preferences of Bulgarian centipedes known to date and provides a key for their identification..
Biogeography and Ecology of Bulgaria by Victor Fet,Alexi Popov Pdf
From single-celled organisms in Black Sea sand to endemic cave crustaceans, from mountain glacial relict insects to the most diverse bird fauna in Europe, the fauna of Bulgaria has been a subject of study for more than a century. This is the first English language survey of all vertebrate and many key invertebrate groups of Bulgaria, their faunistics, origin, geographical and ecological distribution, and conservation issues.
Treatise on Zoology - Anatomy, Taxonomy, Biology. The Myriapoda, Volume 1 by Alessandro Minelli Pdf
Volume I opens with an introductory treatment of myriapod affinities and phylogeny. The following chapters are mostly devoted to the Chilopoda or centipedes, extensively treated from the point of view of external and internal morphology, physiology, reproduction, development, distribution, ecology, phylogeny and taxonomy. All currently recognized suprageneric and generic taxa are considered. Additional chapters deal with the two smaller myriapod classes, the Symphyla and the Pauropoda.

An Annotated Type Catalogue of the Centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda) Held in the Zoological Museum Hamburg by Detlef Thofern ((Author of An annotated type catalogue of the centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda) held in the Zoological Museum Ham, burg)),Nadine Dupérré,Danilo Harms Pdf
"Abstract: Centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda) are carnivorous arthropods that live in leaf litter and soil habitats on all continents except Antarctica. Roughly 3,300 species have been described to date but the taxonomy is still progressing and requires a thorough documentation of type material and type deposits. In this paper we provide an annotated catalogue of the centipede type collection at the Zoological Museum (ZMH) in Hamburg. This collection comprises 490 type specimens belonging to 141 taxa originally described as species, subspecies and varieties. More than half of these taxa were described by the pioneering myriapodologists Carl Graf Attems (Vienna) and Karl Kraepelin (Hamburg). The collection includes material representing 93 valid species or subspecies and contains specimens predominantly from Australia (33%), Asia (22%), Africa (20%) and South America (20%). Taxonomically, the focus is on the centipede orders Scolopendromorpha (56 valid species) and Geophilomorpha (28 valid species) with fewer types for the Lithobiomorpha (8 species). A total of 48 taxa (34% of type species) have been synonymized since they were originally described and the type material for 12 additional species at the ZMH is lost. We provide a brief historical overview of this collection from its origin at the Museum Godeffroy and the Johanneum in Hamburg, including the most relevant taxonomists and collectors, followed by an annotated taxonomic catalogue with details on all species that are or were represented by type material. Keywords: Carl Attems, Chilopoda, Karl Kraepelin, nomenclature, taxonomy"--Page 3.
Biodiversity of Eastern Rhodopes (Bulgaria and Greece) by Petŭr Beron,Alexi Popov Pdf
The second volume of the series "Biodiversity of Bulgaria" deals with both parts (Bulgarian and Greek) of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The book consists of three articles on the flora (1962 species of higher plants) and 45 articles on the fauna (4329 animal species, both vertebrates and invertebrates). The volume contains also zoogeographical analysis of each group, data about relicts, endemics and sites of importance for conservation. The huge amount of information is provided by more than 56 authors from Bulgaria and abroad. The book is indispensable for any zoological library, especially those collecting faunistic surveys, as well as for zoologists, biogeographers, conservationists, collectors and all lovers of nature.
An Annotated Catalog of Centipedes (Chilopoda) from the United States of America, Canada and Greenland (1758-2008) by Randy J. Mercurio Pdf
Centipedes are top of the food chain invertebrate predators that form an integral part of ecosystems worldwide. Amazingly, they link the vertebrate and invertebrate worlds through the food web. Unfortunately, habitat destruction and alteration through floral and faunal introductions continue to imperil native microhabitat specialists such as centipedes. There has never been a greater time or need for scientists of different disciplinary backgrounds to cooperate on unraveling the complex mechanisms of ecosystems. Centipedes hold secrets of bioluminescence; chemical defenses, photoreception and much more that we have only begun to comprehend. We desperately need systematists, biologists, ecologists, molecular biologists, microscopists, biochemists and others to coordinate studies that advance our knowledge of centipedes. It is the author's intent for this catalog to serve as a tool in achieving these goals through studying one of the most under admired yet incredible creatures that has roamed the earth for over 400 million years.
Stories about sinister centipedes are legendary but behind the myths lie an important, valuable, and harmless group of invertebrate predators performing a vital service to ecosystems by helping to keep plant-eating pest populations in check. Orin McMonigle's Centipedes in Captivity details the five chilopod orders, highlighting the biggest and most beautiful species commonly kept in captivity. Those who want to learn more about these magnificent creatures, their toxicology, biology, and variety will find the accounts just as useful as those interested in containing, mating, and successfully reproducing the more spectacular centipedes in the laboratory, or at home.
