A Chance to Serve by Brian Reynolds Pdf

A Chance to Serve is a formation program that enables teenagers to become effective ministers to their peers. This systematic program offers interested young people a progressive sequence of opportunities for growth in personal faith, for community building, and for leadership training. Written by Brian Reynolds, cofounder of the Center for Ministry Development, this training program has been successfully piloted in several different settings around the country. This peer ministry training program is suitable for use in a variety of settings: schools, parishes, retreat centers, youth programs, campus ministry settings, or diocesan youth organizations. The leader's manual is organized into three sections: Section 1 presents the conceptual and theoretical framework of peer ministry. Section 2 addresses the practical aspects of establishing a program. Section 3, which forms the heart of the training program, consists of eighteen detailed 150-minute training modules, including copies of the worksheets for the young people. A bibliography contains additional peer ministry resources for the reader.

Called to Serve by Douglas LeRoy Pdf

Throughout our denomination’s nearly 130-year history, twenty-one general overseers have been selected by its ministers as the denomination’s premier leaders—from A. J. Tomlinson, the first, until Raymond F. Culpepper, whose term ended in 2012. Except for the first three, Dr. Douglas LeRoy has known each of them personally. That places him in a unique position to tell the stories of these officials and reflect on their leadership. He also allows each leader to speak for himself through a sermon selected from his writings. This has been a labor of love for Doug LeRoy, performed over a period of years. He has done well! Let us now learn from our leaders. I am convinced this book will increase our understanding, help us avoid pitfalls, multiply our effectiveness, enhance our endurance, and inspire us. I commend it to your reading. —Mark L. Williams General Overseer, Church of God January 2014

Fostering Global Citizenship by Jo Beth Mullens,Pru Cuper Pdf

With awareness of both the opportunities and challenges presented by globalization, there is a growing trend among colleges and universities across the country to commit goals and resources to the concept of internationalizing their campuses. This can occur in a number of different ways but a common thread involves exploring the concept of global citizenship and finding ways to embed this concept in undergraduate curricula. For faculty, this may call for moving out of a presumed comfort zone in the traditional classroom and determining new approaches to teaching a generation of students who will live and work in a more global context. A method for accomplishing this work that is growing in popularity involves offering short-term, faculty-led field courses to international settings. In fact, today more college students are participating in such short-term study abroad opportunities than the more traditional semester and/or yearlong programs. Faculty and administrators who want to capitalize on short-term, study abroad programs as a means for internationalizing their campuses need practical resources to help them realize this challenging but important goal. They not only need support in developing the course curricula and logistics, but also in constructing authentic means for assessing the multi-faceted learning that occurs. Short-term international programs, when carefully planned and executed, engage the participants (both students and faculty) in unique learning experiences that can involve service, research, and critical analysis of what it truly means to be a global citizen. Such work helps define the somewhat nebulous but worthy goals of internationalizing campuses and fostering global citizenship. The authors of this text are professional educators with deep experience in global education and curriculum development. They offer a valuable resource for the development, execution and assessment of faculty-led international field courses that is at once theoretical, practical and motivational. Whether readers are considering offering an international field program for the first time and need guidance; are veteran field course leaders who would like to take their work to the next level; or are administrators attempting to encourage and provide needed support for faculty-led international programs, this book will prove invaluable.

Analyzing Genres in Political Communication by Piotr Cap,Urszula Okulska Pdf

Featuring contributions by leading specialists in the field, the volume is a survey of cutting edge research in genres in political discourse. Since, as is demonstrated, “political genres” reveal many of the problems pertaining to the analysis of communicative genres in general, it is also a state-of-the-art addition to contemporary genre theory. The book offers new methodological, theoretical and empirical insights in both the long-established genres (speeches, interviews, policy documents, etc.), and the modern, rapidly-evolving generic forms, such as online political ads or weblogs. The chapters, which engage in timely issues of genre mediatization, hybridity, multimodality, and the mixing of discursive styles, come from a broad range of perspectives spanning Critical Discourse Studies, pragmatics, cognitive psychology, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and media studies. As such, they constitute essential reading for anyone seeking an interdisciplinary yet coherent research agenda within the vast and complex territory of today’s forms of political communication.
