A Childhood Adrift by René Goldman Pdf

"Holding me kicking and screaming, that brute ran toward the awaiting train, past Mama, whom I saw being dragged over the floor struggling and crying. The entire station was a scene of bedlam, with men, women and children being pulled, shoved and hurled into the train . . ." René Goldman grows up entranced with the theatre, music, languages and geography. Surrounded by his parents' love and protection, he wanders the streets and alleys of Luxembourg and then Brussels, carefree and prone to mischief. Yet as he starts hearing adults speak the words "deportation" and "resettlement," René is forced to grapple with a strange reality. When his family flees to France, eight-year-old René is separated from both of his parents and shunted between children's homes and convents, where he must hide both his identity and his mounting anxiety. As René waits and waits for his parents to return, even liberation day does not feel like freedom. An eloquent personal narrative detailed with historical research and commentary, A Childhood Adriftexplores identity, closure, disillusionment and the anguish of silenced emotions.

Adrift by David T. K. Wong Pdf

In 1935, six-year-old Tzi Ki was taken away from his mother in Canton, by his grandmother, to live at Blair Road in Singapore. This is the first part of David T. K. Wong’s multi-volume family memoir. It traces of his tumultuous growing-up years from his birth in Hong Kong, his early years in Canton, his childhood in Singapore—living with the complicated extended families of his polygamous grandfather and father—to his lean and turbulent early teenage years in Perth after escaping from the Japanese Occupation. This is a unique psychological journey of a young man in the twilight of colonialism, searching for where he belongs.

Child well-being, child poverty and child policy in modern nations by Smeeding, Timothy M.,Vleminckx, Koen Pdf

Child poverty and the well-being of children is an important policy issue throughout the industrialised world. Some 47 million children in 'rich' countries live in families so poor that their health and well-being are at risk. The main themes addressed are: · the extent and trend of child poverty in industrialised nations; · outcomes for children - for example, the relationship between childhood experiences and children's health; · country studies and emerging issues; · child and family policies. All the contributions underline the urgent need for a comprehensive policy to reduce child poverty rates and to improve the well-being of children. Findings are clearly presented and key focus points identified for policy makers to consider.

Spaces for Children by T.G. David,C.S. Weinstein Pdf

As a developmental psychologist with a strong interest in children's re sponse to the physical environment, I take particular pleasure in writing a foreword to the present volume. It provides impressive evidence of the con cern that workers in environmental psychology and environmental design are displaying for the child as a user of the designed environment and indi cates a recognition of the need to apply theory and findings from develop mental and environmental psychology to the design of environments for children. This seems to me to mark a shift in focus and concern from the earlier days of the interaction between environmental designers and psy chologists that occurred some two decades ago and provided the impetus for the establishment of environmental psychology as a subdiscipline. Whether because children-though they are consumers of designed environments are not the architect's clients or because it seemed easier to work with adults who could be asked to make ratings of environmental spaces and comment on them at length, a focus on the child in interaction with en vironments was comparatively slow in developing in the field of environ ment and behavior. As the chapters of the present volume indicate, that situation is no longer true today, and this is a change that all concerned with the well-being and optimal functioning of children will welcome.
