A Compendium Christian Theology, Vol. 2 by William Burt Pope Pdf

The second volume of Pope's excellent study commences with the crucial subjects of sin and redemption; their origin both in the universe and the Christian theological canon. A stunning compendium of study spanning three volumes, A Compendium of Christian Theology is the masterwork of William Burt Pope. After many years spent studying various separate and divergent texts, each of which contained their own value and insight, Pope desired to unite and present these ideas - some of which spanned millennia of religious thought - into a single resplendent and informative work. Arranging his study in a sensible manner, Pope commences by defining the basics of Christianity: the nature and attributes of the divine, the tenets of human faith towards Him, and the qualities of religious inspiration and God's creation that all Christians believe in. The drier and more cryptic aspects of religious study are elucidated; the author, already a teacher with over a decade of experience, covers each subject with fine instructional clarity. This core thesis is then delved into: topics such as sin and straying from the path of the Lord, redemption and atonement of the soul, and the personhood of Jesus Christ are discussed. The notion of salvation and ascendance of the believer to heaven, and the gaining of an affinity with the Holy Spirit, are likewise detailed. Latterly in the third volume, Pope details the Christian idea of sanctification and the ethics that each follower must practice in day-to-day life. How the Christian church operates and was organized is also looked at. Appropriately, Pope concludes his book work with an examination of eschatology - the manner in which a soul traverses death and is judged in the afterlife, before heading for its final destiny. Somewhat uniquely for a book of Christian scholarship, Pope included a list of relevant Biblical citations in each lesson. These abbreviated listings help readers understand how Pope relied upon the Bible as a source text, that they may follow the author's thinking and confirm its validity. William Burt Pope was a Methodist academic, theologian and lecturer who spent much of his life resident in England. Distinguishing himself in the mid-19th century as a talented linguist and translator of Germanic Christian books and documents, it was in the 1870s that the author used the accumulation of decades of knowledge and study to create his Compendium of Christian Theology. This and other texts would supplement Pope's theological tutelage; he was a respected teacher at Didsbury Wesleyan College near the city of Manchester, England. Brought up in the Methodist tradition, Pope nevertheless believed in the ecumenical cause; this all-embracing work, relevant to Christians of any denomination, being the greatest testament to his belief in the devotional unity of the ancient teachings and lore.

Christian Theology, Volume 1 by T. A. Noble Pdf

The Grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the first volume of a three-volume systematics, Christian Theology. The volume is in three parts. Part 1, Faith and History, introduces Christian Theology, explaining why it begins with Christ. It also reviews what is known about Jesus historically and the faith in which he was brought up--the faith in the God of Israel. This part concludes with an examination of the resurrection of Jesus. Part 2, Christology: The Doctrine of the Person of Christ, begins with theology as 'faith seeking understanding'. It is faith in the Gospel that the crucified Christ is risen from the dead, and this faith in turn issues in the confession that Jesus Christ is 'Lord'. From here, part 2 traces the logic of the Church's development of Christology, the doctrine of the Person of Christ, from Scripture and, specifically, from the apostolic Gospel. Part 3, Soteriology: The Doctrine of the Work of Christ, investigates the 'Grace' of God seen in the doctrine of the Atonement as an aspect of Christology. Throughout the entire volume, Biblical, Historical, and Systematic Theology are integrated, drawing on major historical works of Theology and on contemporary scholarship.

Systematic Theology, Volume 1 by Paul Tillich Pdf

This is the first part of Paul Tillich's three-volume Systematic Theology, one of the most profound statements of the Christian message ever composed and the summation and definitive presentation of the theology of the most influential and creative American theologian of the twentieth century. In this path-breaking volume Tillich presents the basic method and statement of his system—his famous "correlation" of man's deepest questions with theological answers. Here the focus is on the concepts of being and reason. Tillich shows how the quest for revelation is integral to reason itself. In the same way a description of the inner tensions of being leads to the recognition that the quest for God is implied in finite being. Here also Tillich defines his thought in relation to philosophy and the Bible and sets forth his famous doctrine of God as the "Ground of Being." Thus God is understood not as a being existing beside other beings, but as being-itself or the power of being in everything. God cannot be made into an object; religious knowledge is, therefore, necessarily symbolic.

Christ and Reconciliation by Veli-Matti Krkkinen Pdf

In Christ and Reconciliation Veli-Matti Karkkainen develops a constructive Christology and theology of salvation in dialogue with the best of Christian tradition, with contemporary theology in its global and contextual diversity, and with other major living faiths. Karkkainen's Constructive Christian Theology for the Pluralistic World is a five-volume project that aims to develop a new approach to and method of doing Christian theology in our pluralistic world at the beginning of the third millennium. Topics such as diversity, inclusivity, violence, power, cultural hybridity, and justice are part of the constructive theological discussion along with classical topics such as the messianic consciousness, incarnation, atonement, and the person of Christ. With the metaphor of hospitality serving as the framework for his discussion, Karkkainen engages Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism in sympathetic and critical mutual dialogue while remaining robustly Christian in his convictions. Never before has a full-scale doctrinal theology been attempted in such a wide and deep dialogical mode.
