Women in the Civil War by Larry G. Eggleston Pdf

When the Civil War broke out, women answered the call for help. They broke away from their traditional roles and served in many capacities, some of them even going so far as to disguise themselves as men and enlist in the army. Estimates of such women enlistees range from 400 to 700. About 60 women soldiers were known to have been killed or wounded. More than sixty women who fought or who served the Union or Confederacy in other ways are featured. Among them are Sarah Thompson, the Union spy and nurse who brought down the famous raider John Hunt Morgan; Elizabeth Van Lew, the Union spy instrumental in the largest prison break of the war; Sarah Malinda Blalock, who fought for the Confederacy as a soldier and then for the Union as a guerrilla raider; Dr. Mary Walker, a doctor for the Union and the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for Civil War service; and Jennie Hodgers, the longest serving woman soldier (and the only woman to receive a soldier’s pension).

The Story of the 116th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion by St. Clair Augustin Mulholland Pdf

The 116th Pennsylvania was no ordinary regiment. For two hard years it fought with Thomas Meagher's celebrated Irish Brigade of the Army of the Potomac. Though only partially Irish itself, the 116th won an honored place in this famous unit's history by its faithful service in some of the bloodiest campaigns of the war. The mutual respect between the Irish and the 116th was certainly founded on their shared bravery and suffering during the campaigns from Fredericksburg to Petersburg, but it no doubt also owed something to the remarkable Irish colonel, St. Clair Mulholland, who commanded the 116th through most of its battles. Mulholland was a soldier's soldier: disciplined, courageous, caring, and dedicated to the men of his regiment. Wounded four times (once, it was thought, mortally), he time and again rose from his hospital bed to return to command. Winner of the congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at Chancellorsville, he was later brevetted brigadier general and major general for service in the Wilderness and at Petersburg.

The Civil War Guerrilla by Joseph M. Beilein,Matthew C. Hulbert Pdf

Civil War historians shed new light on the importance of guerrilla combat across the south in this “useful and fascinating work” (Choice). Touching states from Virginia to New Mexico, guerrilla warfare played a significant yet underexamined role in the Civil War. Guerrilla fighters fought for both the Union and the Confederacy—as well as their own ethnic groups, tribes, or families. They were deadly forces that plundered, tortured, and terrorized those in their path, and their impact is not yet fully understood. This richly diverse volume assembles a team of both rising and eminent scholars to examine guerrilla warfare in the South during the Civil War. Together, they discuss irregular combat as practiced by various communities in multiple contexts, including how it was used by Native Americans, the factors that motivated raiders in the border states, and the women who participated as messengers, informants, collaborators, and combatants. They also explore how the Civil War guerrilla has been mythologized in history, literature, and folklore.

Named by the Enemy by Brian A. Reid Pdf

The Royal Winnipeg Rifles regiment holds a special honour - a second official name first bestowed by the enemy: Little Black Devils. The regiment was formed in 1883 and provided members of the Nile Expedition of 1884/5 to rescue Gordon of Khartoum. Its first major operation was the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, seeing action at Fish Creek and Batoche. The regiment was prominent during the First World War, including the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915, when it withstood a poison gas attack and assault that sent units on both sides reeling, leading British Prime Minister Lloyd George to declare that the regiment by steadiness under strain was the focal point in saving the Channel ports and removing the danger to England of invasion. In World War II the regiment was in the spearhead of the Normandy landings and the first Allied unit to reach its D+1 objective. It fought across Northwest Europe into Germany. Since the war it has provided companies for NATO service in Germany and Korea, as well as UN peacekeeping missions.

Yank and Rebel Rangers by Robert W Black Pdf

The American internal war of 1861-65 was not civil. Those fighting for the Union called it the "War of the Rebellion" while the Confederacy viewed it as the "War of Yankee Aggression" or the "Second War of Independence". Armies fought great, sweeping battles over vast distances and are well recorded - Antietam, Shiloh, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg - but in the seams of the battlefield another, and much less known or publicized war raged. Both the Union and the Confederacy employed small forces of bold and highly motivated soldiers for special operations behind enemy lines. Skilled in infiltration - sometimes disguising themselves as rural mail carriers - these warriors deftly scouted deep into enemy territory, captured important personnel, disrupted lines of communication and logistics, and sowed confusion and fear. Often wearing the uniform of the enemy, they faced execution as spies if captured. Despite these risks, and in part because of them, these warriors fought and died as American rangers.

U.S. Colored Troops Defeat Confederate Cavalry by Edwin W. Besch Pdf

Wilson’s Wharf was the first major clash between U.S. Colored Troops and the Army of Northern Virginia. The 1st and 10th USCT infantry regiments, supported by two cannon and two U.S. Navy gunboats, faced 11 detachments of veteran Confederate cavalry who were under orders to “kill every man.” Union commander General Edward Wild, a one-armed abolitionist, refused General Fitzhugh Lee’s demand for surrender, telling Lee to “go to Hell.” The battle resulted in a victory for the mainly black Union force. This book describes the action in detail and in the larger context of the history of black U.S. servicemen, including the British recruitment of runaway slaves during the Revolutionary War, the black Colonial Marines who joined the British in torching Washington in the War of 1812, and the South’s attempts to enlist slaves in the final months of the Civil War.
