Excerpt from A Comprehensive Phraseological English-Ancient and Modern Greek Lexicon, Vol. 1 of 2 This work, although styled a compendium, is not any more deficient than that from which it had its origin, in richness of vocabulary generally, and in particular in the significations of words traced out step by step from the root, and in the number of its phrases and idio matic expressions. In order to obtain this result, I avoided the system of repeating each English word - a system de vised in order to show the pro nunciation of each word, but which, if thoroughly gone into, would merely fill up space. To economise time and space, I do not enter into the various reasons for thisfbut will simply remark here that the proper pronunciation of the English language can only be learnt by the ear, and cannot be taught by any system other than those already existing.
