A Concise Account of the Origin of the Two Houses of Parliament by Edward Christian Pdf

Excerpt from A Concise Account of the Origin of the Two Houses of Parliament: With an Impartial Statement of the Privileges of the House of Commons, and of the Liberty of the Subject It is remarkable that the different sides of this question have been strenuously maintained by different parties in politics. The friends of the prerogative, in order to treat the House of Commons with less respect, and to diminish its dignity, contend that it owes its origin to the rebellion of the Earl of Leicester, in the 49th year of Henry III., and consequently that it was an innovation in our government; and when the attendance of the Commons was ordered in the next reign by Edward I., that the authority and existence of the Lower House emanated from the prerogative of the Crown. Because this has been advanced by one party, those who act upon opposite principles think it necessary wholly to deny it, and to endeavour to prove that representation did not commence in the reign of Henry III., but that it must have existed before the Conquest, and from the remotest antiquity; on whichever side is the truth, the decision of this question ought by no means to diminish our veneration for our present liberty and constitution. House of Commons Procedure and Practice by Canada. Parliament. House of Commons,Robert Marleau,Camille Montpetit Pdf

This reference book is primarily a procedural work which examines the many forms, customs, and practices which have been developed and established for the House of Commons since Confederation in 1867. It provides a distinctive Canadian perspective in describing procedure in the House up to the end of the first session of the 36th Parliament in Sept. 1999. The material is presented with full commentary on the historical circumstances which have shaped the current approach to parliamentary business. Key Speaker's rulings and statements are also documented and the considerable body of practice, interpretation, and precedents unique to the Canadian House of Commons is amply illustrated. Chapters of the book cover the following: parliamentary institutions; parliaments and ministries; privileges and immunities; the House and its Members; parliamentary procedure; the physical & administrative setting; the Speaker & other presiding officers; the parliamentary cycle; sittings of the House; the daily program; oral & written questions; the process of debate; rules of order & decorum; the curtailment of debate; special debates; the legislative process; delegated legislation; financial procedures; committees of the whole House; committees; private Members' business; public petitions; private bills practice; and the parliamentary record. Traitor to the Crown by James Long,Ben Long Pdf

“The meticulousness of the Longs’ research is awesome” in this historical account of the plot to brand a British naval official as a Catholic traitor (The Guardian). 1679, England: Fear of conspiracy and religious terrorism have provoked panic in politicians and a zealous reaction from the legal system. Everywhere, or so it is feared, Catholic agents are plotting to overthrow the King. Samuel Pepys, Secretary of the Admiralty, finds himself charged with treason and facing a show trial and execution. Imprisoned in the Tower of London, Pepys sets to work investigating his mysterious accuser, Colonel John Scott, and uncovers a life riddled with ambition, forgery, treason and—ultimately—murder. Using rare access to Pepys’ account of the affair, James Long and Ben Long brilliantly evoke a turbulent period in England’s history—and tell the forgotten story of the two most dangerous years in the life of the legendary diarist. “As gripping as any thriller.” —The Times (London) “I couldn’t put it down, and there aren’t many books on the seventeenth century you can say that about.” —History Today

The Plot Against Pepys by Ben Long,James Long Pdf

It is 1679 and England is awash with suspicion. Fear of conspiracy and religious terrorism has provoked panic in politicians and a zealous reaction from the legal system. Everywhere - or so it is feared - Catholic agents are plotting to overthrow the king. Now Samuel Pepys, Secretary of the Admiralty, finds himself in a position few people then or now would have expected - charged with treason. Imprisoned in the Tower of London and abandoned by the embattled king, Pepys knows that time is running out before his show trial and execution. So, with customary brilliance, he sets to work investigating his mysterious accuser, Colonel John Scott, and uncovers a life riddled with ambition, forgery, treason and - ultimately - murder. Using rare access to Pepys' own account of the affair, James Long and Ben Long brilliantly evoke a turbulent period in England's history - and tell the forgotten story of the two most dangerous years in the life of the legendary diarist.
