A Concise History of Missions (Classic Reprint) by Edwin Munsell Bliss Pdf

Excerpt from A Concise History of Missions The history Of missions is the history of the extension of Christianity. It is thus a depart ment of general church history; and cannot be fully understood except as its relations to other departments are kept in mind. The progress of the Church has been by no means uniform. There have been periods of special missionary activity, others in which doctrinal statement, ecclesiastical organization, the consolidation and strengthening of church life, have absorbed attention. Each, however, has had its influence on all the others, and the work as a whole has a unity which can only be realized as one takes a survey of the whole field. Such a survey it is the purpose of this book to give. There is no detailed statement of different epochs or of the various phases Of mission work. The aim is rather to indicate the general char acter of the epochs, show the mutual relation and influence of the phases, and thus make it some what easier to place correctly the details as we come across them elsewhere. To use the phrase of one who has himself done much to help in the general knowledge of missions, Mr. John R. Mott, it lays the rails that connect the remoter sections and make passage from one to another possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Christian Mission by Edward L. Smither Pdf

A deeper understanding of the grand history of mission leads to a faithful expression of God's mission today. From the beginning, God's mission has been carried out by people sent around the world. From Abraham to Jesus, the thread that weaves its way throughout Scripture is a God who sends his people across the world, proclaiming his kingdom. As the world has evolved, Christian mission continues to be a foundational tradition in the church. In this one-volume textbook, Edward Smither weaves together a comprehensive history of Christian mission, from the apostles to the modern church. In each era, he focuses on the people sent by God to the ends of the earth, while also describing the cultural context they encountered. Smither highlights the continuity and development across thousands of years of global mission.

Organization and Methods of Mission Work by Edwin Munsell Bliss Pdf

Excerpt from Organization and Methods of Mission Work: Being Part III. Of "a Concise History of Missions" It was originally intended as simply Part III. Of A Concise History of Missions, in course of preparation, but is published in this form in advance, to meet what has been represented as an immediate want in connection with the study of missions by Student Volunteer Unions, Chris tian Endeavor Societies, mission bands, and other similar organizations. The first section of the complete book will give a survey of the develop ment of the missionary enterprise of the Church, while the second will take up the different fields. It is evident, therefore, that this division must to an extent presuppose certain statements in those sections, and occasional references of the kind will be found. The same fact will explain the meager account, and sometimes the entire omis sion, of facts which are not immediately germane to the special topic in view. The Evangelization of the World: by Jacques A. Blocher,Jacques Blandenier Pdf

Written in an engaging style and intended largely for a lay audience, The Evangelization of the World tells the remarkable story of how Christianity grew from an insignificant Jewish sect in the first century until, by the beginning of the twenty-first century, it had become the world’s first truly global religion. The book is careful to explain historical context and mission theory, but the foci of the narrative are the great personalities of mission—the Apostle Paul, St. Martin of Tours, St. Patrick, St. Francis Xavier, John Eliot, Count Von Zinzendorf, William Carey, Robert Morrison, David Livingstone, Mary Slessor, Albert Schweitzer, and many others—who make this account of the expansion of the church a fascinating and often dramatic tale. In addition, the book does not neglect the great mission conferences of the twentieth century, nor does it avoid the controversial aspects of mission that, in many instances, continue to vex the movement today.

A History of Christian Missions by Stephen Neill Pdf

A History of Christian Missions traces the expansion of Christianity from its origins in the Middle East to Rome, the rest of Europe and the colonial world, and assesses its position as a major religious force worldwide. Many of the world’s religions have not actively sought converts, largely because they have been too regional in character. Buddhism, Islam and Christianity, however, are the three chief exceptions to this, and Christianity in particular has found a home in almost every country in the world. Professor Stephen Neill’s comprehensive and authoritative survey examines centuries of missionary activity, beginning with Christ and working through the Crusades and the colonization of Asia and Africa up to the present day, concluding with a shrewd look ahead to what the future may hold for the Christian Church.

A Concise History of Christianity in Canada by Terrence Murphy,Terrence M. Murphy,Roberto Perin Pdf

Organized along linguistic rather than denominational lines, it emphasizes the common experiences of the churches and the profound impact that Christianity has had on both French- and English-Canadian society and culture. Alongside the institutional development for the churches and the work of the clergy, it examines the religious outlook and practices of the laity, and how these have varied with gender, ethnic affiliation, and class; relations between denominations; missionary efforts, especially among the First Nations, and the responses to them; and the complex interactions between church and state.
