Pinter in Play by Susan Hollis Merritt Pdf

Pinter in Play provides a survey of diverse readings of the Harold Pinter canon organized around and presented in terms of the major critical schools of the past twenty-five years, from New Criticism to deconstruction to poststructuralism. Reflecting on the cultural, personal, sociological, and philosophical contexts of these diverse critical perspectives and the critics who express them, this book is equally about the act or the art of literary criticism and itself an important work of literary criticism. Drawing on interviews with Pinter scholars, Susan Hollis Merritt shows how critics "play" with Pinter and thereby seriously enforce personal, professional, and political affiliations. Cutting across traditional academic and nonacademic boundaries, Merritt argues that greater cooperation and collaboration among critics can resolve conflicts, promote greater social equity, and foster ameliorative critical and cultural change.

Pinter by Martin Esslin Pdf

First published in 1977, the third edition of Pinter is an excellent analysis of Harold Pinter and his works. Written when Pinter was only a few plays old, the book draws on several sources, including interviews with Pinter himself, to comment on Pinter’s career, his aesthetic and philosophical choices, and his oeuvre as a writer. The section devoted to his individual plays has been arranged in a chronological manner to visually represent the growth of the playwright and the relationship shared between his early and later works. Esslin, known for coining the term ‘theatre of the absurd,’ was himself an inspiration to Pinter and hence, the book records an intellectual and creative exchange between the author and his subject. The book will be of interest to students of literature, drama, history as well as to an academically inclined theatre audience.

Andrew Wyllie and Catherine Rees examine critical approaches and reactions to the major plays, charting the controversies which have arisen in response to Pinter's critiques of political and sexual issues. They consider criticism from the press and academics, on the themes of Absurdism, politics and gender identity. By placing this criticism in its historical context, this guide illustrates a transition from bewilderment and outrage to affection, fascination - and more outrage.

Pinter Problem by Austin E. Quigley Pdf

In spite of steady growth in popularity, Pinter's plays have continued to elude adequate critical appraisal. Considering the last decade's scholarship, Austin E. Quigley attributes the impasse in Pinter criticism to the failure of Pinter's readers to appreciate the diversity of ways in which language can transmit information. This explanation places recent commentaries in a new light and enables the author to take a fresh approach to the plays themselves. Originally published in 1975. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Sharp Cut by Steven H. Gale Pdf

While best known as one of the most important playwrights of the twentieth century, Harold Pinter (1930–2008) had an equally successful career writing screenplays. His collaborations with director Joseph Losey garnered great attention and esteem, and two of his screenplays earned Academy Award nominations: The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) and Betrayal (1983). He is also credited for writing an unproduced script to remake Stanley Kubrick's 1962 adaptation of Lolita. Much scholarship has been dedicated to the subject of Pinter as playwright, but the rich landscape of his work in film has been left largely undisturbed. In Sharp Cut: Harold Pinter's Screenplays and the Artistic Process, Steven H. Gale, the world's foremost Pinter scholar, analyzes Pinter's creative process from initial conception to finished film. Gale makes careful, point-by-point comparisons of each stage in the screenplay's creation—the source material, the adaptations themselves, and the films made from the scripts—in order to reveal the meaning behind each film script and to explain the cinematic techniques used to express that meaning. Unlike most Pinter scholars, who focus almost solely on the written word, Gale devotes discussion to the cinematic interpretation of the scripts through camera angles and movement, cutting, and other techniques. Pinter does not merely convert his stage scripts to screenplays; he adapts the works to succeed in the other medium, avoiding elements of the live play that do not work onscreen and using the camera's focusing operations in ways that are not possible on the stage. As Pinter's career progressed and his writing evolved, screenplays became for him an increasingly vital means of creative expression. Sharp Cut is the first study to fully explore this important component of the Pinter canon.

The Weasel Under the Cocktail Cabinet by Binnie Brand Yeates Pdf

Why were Harold Pinter’s plays met with so much disdain in the early years, when he has since been acknowledged as one of the greatest British dramatists of the twentieth century? In this study, Binnie Brand Yeates examines and compellingly demonstrates, through Pinter’s striking theatrical skills and the behaviour, motivation and language of the characters in the plays written between 1957 and 1964, the probable cause of the alienation, and leaves no doubt that, though controversial, Pinter has in fact always been an extremely powerful and accomplished playwright. One of the first commentaries ever written on Pinter’s plays, now with a 2013 Postscript covering 'The Hothouse' and selected plays written between 1978 and 1991, this is an original, thought-provoking and eye-opening interpretation, an essential reader for students, theatre lovers and Pinter devotees alike. “What Binnie Yeates offers here is not just another set of thoughts on Pinter's early plays, but one that captures a snapshot of the growth of his reputation in the mid-sixties. Based upon a dissertation that Binnie wrote in 1966, she effectively summarises the first key phase of Pinter’s writing up to and including the career-defining 'The Homecoming'. With little dedicated Pinter scholarship available at the time of the original study, Yeates considered Pinter free from too much critical noise on her subject, and did so predominantly through considering character and motivation. She offers thoughts on Pinter's signatures of menace, status and game-playing, and how his work affected audience through specific uses of language and the impact of disorientation. The work captures an admiration for the playwright in a passionately articulated defence and appreciation of his plays, and reminds us of a time when his reputation was still being defined.” Dr Mark Taylor-Batty Senior Lecturer in Theatre Studies, University of Leeds; Executive, International Harold Pinter Society

Harold Pinter by Basil Chiasson,Catriona Fallow Pdf

This important book offers a thematic collection of critical essays, ideal for undergraduate courses on modern British theatre, on Harold Pinter's theatrical works, alongside new interviews with contemporary theatre practitioners. The life and works of Harold Pinter (1930–2008), a pivotal figure in British theatre, have been widely discussed, debated and celebrated internationally. For over five decades, Pinter's work traversed and redefined various forms and genres, constantly in dialogue with, and often impacting the work of, other writers, artists and activists. Combining a reconsideration of key Pinter scholarship with new contexts, voices and theoretical approaches, this book opens up fresh insights into the author's work, politics, collaborations and his enduring status as one of the world's foremost dramatists. Three sections re-contextualize Pinter as a cultural figure; explore and interrogate his influence on contemporary British playwriting; and offer a series of original interviews with theatre-makers engaging in the staging of Pinter's work today. Reconsiderations of Pinter's relationship to literary and theatrical movements such as Modernism and the Theatre of the Absurd; interrogations of the role of class, elitism and religious and cultural identity sit alongside chapters on Pinter's personal politics, specifically in relation to the Middle East.

Pinter's Stage - A New Genre of Theatre by Francis Grin Pdf

Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Theater Studies, Dance, grade: H1, University of Melbourne, course: Modern Drama, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: When Harold Pinter’s plays first hit the British stage, they didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome. The 1958 Lyric Opera House premier of The Birthday Party was famously ripped to shreds, as the Daily Telegraph called it “one of those plays in which an author wallows in symbols and revels in obscurity.” (Darlington 1958) Its seemingly incomprehensible dialogue and action simply baffled most audience members into boredom. Yet today, Pinter’s plays are considered some of the most pivotal milestones in the movement of modern drama. Critics warmed up to Pinter as they stopped trying to read his plays through an already existent framework (realist, absurdist, etc.) and finally saw the texts for what they really were: revolutionary works of theatre. In a review regarding the 2005 Duchess Theatre production of The Birthday Party, Michael Billington states “one problem in the 50s was that critics assumed Pinter was writing in the absurdist vein of Ionesco and NF Simpson. Now it is much easier to see the play for what it is: a rep thriller invented by a man who’s read Kaftka.” (Billington 2005) The point being, the major plays of Harold Pinter can neither be pushed into the categories of realist or absurdist theatre, they belong in a league of their own and need to be looked at through an independent framework.

Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory by Irene Rima Makaryk Pdf

The last half of the twentieth century has seen the emergence of literary theory as a new discipline. As with any body of scholarship, various schools of thought exist, and sometimes conflict, within it. I.R. Makaryk has compiled a welcome guide to the field. Accessible and jargon-free, the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory provides lucid, concise explanations of myriad approaches to literature that have arisen over the past forty years. Some 170 scholars from around the world have contributed their expertise to this volume. Their work is organized into three parts. In Part I, forty evaluative essays examine the historical and cultural context out of which new schools of and approaches to literature arose. The essays also discuss the uses and limitations of the various schools, and the key issues they address. Part II focuses on individual theorists. It provides a more detailed picture of the network of scholars not always easily pigeonholed into the categories of Part I. This second section analyses the individual achievements, as well as the influence, of specific scholars, and places them in a larger critical context. Part III deals with the vocabulary of literary theory. It identifies significant, complex terms, places them in context, and explains their origins and use. Accessibility is a key feature of the work. By avoiding jargon, providing mini-bibliographies, and cross-referencing throughout, Makaryk has provided an indispensable tool for literary theorists and historians and for all scholars and students of contemporary criticism and culture.
