A Damned Rebellion! by Jan Henry Morgan Pdf

It has been coming though no-one thought it would-not even its leaders The 1834 election, with its platform of 'the elective principle' sent Papineau and his Patriote party to a landslide victory. The result struck terror in the hearts of the English minority and the feeble British governor. Then the Legislative Assembly refuses to vote the supply bills. Buoyed by their power in the Assembly, the Patriotes refuse to make any concessions, pass revolutionary resolutions that infuriate both the moderates and the British colonial government. With famine on the rise and law and order breaking down, crime rises, gangs of political thugs parade in the city streets, and inflammatory rhetoric creates an explosive atmosphere in the colony. Niall's personal life is equally fraught. To save the Neilson's favourite daughter, the beautiful Agnes from shame, he behaved as a gentleman, only to have his friends misjudge his motives and call him a fortune-seeker. Julie, the love of his life, repents her choice of the conventual life, but too late for him. Niall suffers another loss as Julie and Ovide turn to each other, and Niall must watch his friend court the woman he has never stopped loving. As the political situation deteriorates, so, too, does Niall's private life. When the governor prorogues the Assembly, sending its infuriated members out to their constituencies, Neilson family relationships decay to the point that Niall resigns from the Quebec Gazette. As a freelance reporter, he joins the front lines, reporting from the battle grounds as words give way to bullets. Once again, Jan Morgan sticks closely to the facts by weaving the reports from the governors, private letters of leaders of the rebellion, newspaper accounts, and many more original sources into a spellbinding account of Lower Canada's rebellion. She gives us a street-level view through the voices of the people on the scene of the heart-wrenching tragedy that tore the country apart and still leaves scars.

El Coyote, the Rebel by Luis P?rez Pdf

A soldier at the age of eleven; an honorably discharged veteran at age of thirteen; a miner, a cotton-picker, a shepherd, and a graduate of Hollywood High, Luis Perez lived an incredible life, which has shaped his story into a vividly-realized autobiographical account. Originally published in 1947, El Coyote , the Rebel tells how the toddler Luis, son of an Aztec mother and a French diplomat father, ended up in the care of an uncle, who soon drank away most of the boys inheritance. Having run away from cruel treatment, Luis by chance came to fight with the rebel armies in the 1910 Mexican Revolution, received the nickname of "El Coyote" for his cunning, and was wounded in combat. Upon being given a discharge and a twenty-dollar bill, he walked across the border to become an American. His story concludes, after an episode of amorous misadventures in a missionary school, with the young hero preparing to marry his true love and solemnly taking the oath of U.S. citizenship, at "the beginning of a new tomorrow."

The Rebel King by Dale Osborne,Cavin Wright Pdf

Edward, cousin to Steven, the true king of Travia, has attempted to usurp the crown and the two armies are at war. Jed Stone, a simple farmhand, conscripted into Steven's army, is severely wounded in the first indecisive battle. But two bowmen, Kit and Thomas, nurse him back to health and a loose friendship develops between them. In the north of the country, Steven's ally, the First Lord Dragar, is murdered, leaving his young son to raise the army needed to help the struggling king. At first, things seem straightforward, but a plot of cunning and deceit is slowly revealed and the shocking outcome is destined to shatter the young lord’s faith in all he knows and understands. An arrogant young lord, Geoffrey Averly, has set his mind on marrying the beautiful seventeen-year-old Lady Mirel Haflan, whose father was killed in the disastrous battle. Her brother, the new and cruel-minded Lord Marcus Haflan, agrees to the union which her father would have deplored. Rather than face her dire fate, Mirel and her maid flee, in search of an invalidation of the contract from the rebel king, Edward. But Geoffrey sets a vast reward for anyone returning the two women - and they fall into the hands of the three bowmen, Kit, Thomas and Jed. Edward decides to seek allies of his own from across the sea, but covetous eyes already watch the unfolding saga, with plans that do not bode well for the future . . .

Rebel Genius by Tara Abraham Pdf

The life and work of a scientist who spent his career crossing disciplinary boundaries—from experimental neurology to psychiatry to cybernetics to engineering. Warren S. McCulloch (1898–1969) adopted many identities in his scientific life—among them philosopher, poet, neurologist, neurophysiologist, neuropsychiatrist, collaborator, theorist, cybernetician, mentor, engineer. He was, writes Tara Abraham in this account of McCulloch's life and work, “an intellectual showman,” and performed this part throughout his career. While McCulloch claimed a common thread in his work was the problem of mind and its relationship to the brain, there was much more to him than that. In Rebel Genius, Abraham uses McCulloch's life as a window on a past scientific age, showing the complex transformations that took place in American brain and mind science in the twentieth century—particularly those surrounding the cybernetics movement. Abraham describes McCulloch's early work in neuropsychiatry, and his emerging identity as a neurophysiologist. She explores his transformative years at the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute and his work with Walter Pitts—often seen as the first iteration of “artificial intelligence” but here described as stemming from the new tradition of mathematical treatments of biological problems. Abraham argues that McCulloch's dual identities as neuropsychiatrist and cybernetician are inseparable. He used the authority he gained in traditional disciplinary roles as a basis for posing big questions about the brain and mind as a cybernetician. When McCulloch moved to the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT, new practices for studying the brain, grounded in mathematics, philosophy, and theoretical modeling, expanded the relevance and ramifications of his work. McCulloch's transdisciplinary legacies anticipated today's multidisciplinary field of cognitive science.
