A Digest of English and American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Alfred Hix Welsh Pdf

Excerpt from A Digest of English and American Literature Literature, in the highest sense, is the artistic expres sion of such thoughts and feelings as speak to our com mon human nature, in every country and in every age. It deals not so much with what we know (facts or knowl edge) as with what we can do, what we can suffer, what we are, and what we may become. That is more eminently literature which gives power; and that is most worthy which, directly or indirectly, gives most power for good. History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Reuben Post Halleck Pdf

Excerpt from History of American Literature The wide use of the author's History of English Literature the favor with which it has been received in all parts of the United States, and the number of earnest requests for a History of American Literature on the same plan, have led to the writing of this book. It has not appeared sooner because the author has followed his rule of making a careful first-hand study, not only of all the matter discussed, but also of a far greater amount, which, although it must be omitted from a condensed textbook, is, nevertheless, necessary as a background for judgment and selection. The following chapters describe the greatest achievements in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, "The half is greater than the whole," and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. The author has further aimed to make this work both interesting and suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Alphonso G. Newcomer Pdf

Excerpt from American Literature The list of late writers included in the appendix of this book is to be regarded chiefly as a directory. Upon many of these writers it is altogether too early to pass judgment, and many of the names have been admitted principally for the reason that they are likely to be sought for, or to make a more complete exhibition of the tendencies Of a time or a locality. The somewhat full references and suggestions for study are intended for aids in the class room. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A First View of English and American Literature (Classic Reprint) by William Vaughn Moody Pdf

Excerpt from A First View of English and American Literature This volume is based upon the authors' more advanced History of English Literature. The aim has been to preserve those features of the previous book which have most commended themselves to high-school and academy teachers, to remove everything which they have found too detailed or too difficult for their students, and to add whatever was suggested by their friendly criticism as likely to increase the value of the book in class-room practice. The literary comment has been simplified, partly by omission, partly by the substitution of explicit statement in the place of what was before only suggested. The number of authors treated has been much reduced, and the attention of the student centred exclusively on a few great representative figures. More space has been given to biography and descriptive sketches, especially in the later periods. Each main epoch has been prefaced by a full historical introduction, and summarized in the form of a review-commentary and questions, together with tabular views. Suggestions concerning the best available texts, and the best biographical and critical aids to study, are given at the close of each chapter. A number of portraits are added, taken in each case from an authentic source. For purposes of fuller reference, some authors not treated in the text are included in the tabular views. A Brief History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by William P. Trent Pdf

Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature In this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I - have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently extended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have condensed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of maintaining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An appendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time permits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, "A History of American Literature, 1607-1865" (1903, Appleton). A History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Percy H. Boynton Pdf

Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. A Short History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Walter Cochrane Bronson Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent Of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chiefly descriptive; elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Excerpt from A General Survey of American Literature HE following book on American literature has grown largely out Of the author's work in the class-room. English and American Literature for Schools and Colleges (Classic Reprint) by HORACE H. MORGAN Pdf

Excerpt from English and American Literature for Schools and Colleges II. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit. A History of American Literature Since 1870 (Classic Reprint) by Fred Lewis Pattee Pdf

Excerpt from A History of American Literature Since 1870 It has been our object to determine this new period and to study its distinguishing characteristics. We have divided the literary history of the century into three periods, denominating them as the Knickerbocker Period, the New England Period, and the National Period, and we have made the last to begin shortly after the close of the Civil War with those new forces and new ideals and broadened views that grew out of that mighty struggle.
