A Diplomatic Diary, 1917 (Classic Reprint) by Hugh Gibson Pdf

Excerpt from A Diplomatic Diary, 1917 This volume is not a carefully prepared treatise on the war. It does not set out to prove anything. It is merely what its title indicates - a private journal jotted down hastily from day to day in odd moments, when more pressing duties would permit. Much material has been eliminated as of little interest. Other material of interest has been left out because it cannot be published at this time. It is believed, however, that what is printed here will suffice to give some idea of life in Belgium during the first few months of the war. I have eliminated from the journal most of the matter about the early history of the Commission for Relief in Belgium. My day-to-day record did not do any sort of justice to the subject, and since it was not adequate, I have preferred to eliminate all but such casual reference to the relief work as is necessary to maintain the narrative. I am reconciled to this treatment of the subject by the knowledge that the story will be told comprehensively and well by Dr. Vernon Kellogg, who will soon publish an authoritative history of the Commissions work. As former Director of the Commission in Belgium, he has the detailed knowledge of its workings and the sympathetic understanding of its purpose which peculiarly fit him for the task. The work of the Commission is of a scope and significance that few of us realise. It is without doubt the greatest humanitarian enterprise in history, conducted under conditions of almost incredible difficulty. Excerpt from A Diplomat's Diary Bah! And to say I did hesitate one mo ment! There is the blemish on my 'scutch eon! The one weakness I blush for to-night under my cap, in the stuffy wagon of this dirty train, which is puffing me away towards the haven where I would not be. Yes, I was tired. I, strong, self-nurtured, self-reliant I, hesitated a moment. What was it for? The girl? The illustrious connection? The hunting-grounds in the Hartz Mountains? Leisure and indolence? The booty? N 0! Ten thousand times no! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Diary of a Nation the War and How We Got Into It, 1918 (Classic Reprint) by Edward S. Martin Pdf

Excerpt from The Diary of a Nation the War and How We Got Into It, 1918 The observations here presented are selected from articles that appeared in Life during the three years fol lowing August, 1914. They are concerned with the war in Europe and with American politics as affected by it. By what processes of sympathy and indignation, through what vicissitudes of diplomacy, delay and almost despair, we came after two years and a half to the breaking point with Germany, may be traced in a measure in the current. Excerpt from A War Diary in Paris 1914-1917 When the World War broke out, we were passing the hot weather in our 'camp' on Squam Lake, among the forest-clad foothills of the White Mountains, and shortly after I sent the following letter: Sir: I have the honor to volunteer my services, for any emergency work of a diplomatic character, at home or abroad, with or without remuneration. I have had the benefit of seven years' (1902- 1909)training and experience, as Secretary of Legation and Charged d'Affaires in Peking, as Secretary of Embassy and Charged d'Affaires in Mexico, and as Minister Plenipotentiary in Nicaragua. I have a good knowledge of French. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Campaign Diary of a French Officer, 1917 (Classic Reprint) by Rene Nicolas Pdf

Excerpt from Campaign Diary of a French Officer, 1917 A campaign diary, do you say, Reader? If the original were before you, you would not find it, like these printed pages, clean and whole. On it are the marks of war blood stains and smears of mud, and, from cover to cover, a hole made by a tiny piece of steel. These you may not see, but for the rest no change has been made. The author is present ing to you his notes just as he set them down at the front. The facts are true, though the form is brief, almost impersonal, and entirely without the literary flourishes that it would have been so easy to add apre's coup. The Diaries of Sir Ernest Satow, British Minister in Tokyo (1895-1900) by Ernest Mason Satow Pdf

LARGE PAPERBACK. The diaries of Sir Ernest Satow, British Minister in Tokyo 1895-1900, transcribed, annotated and indexed by Ian Ruxton with an introduction by Dr. Nigel Brailey. At the time there was no Ambassador and Satow was the chief British representative in Japan, overseeing the Tokyo legation with consulates at Yokohama, Nagasaki, Kobe and Hakodate. His work in easing the ending of extraterritoriality and facilitating the transfer of jurisdiction in the foreign settlements (treaty ports) to Japan in July 1899 was an essential precondition for the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902. The Road Less Traveled by Philip Zelikow Pdf

During a pivotal few months in the middle of the First World War all sides-Germany, Britain, and America-believed the war could be concluded. Peace at the end of 1916 would have saved millions of lives and changed the course of history utterly. Two years into the most terrible conflict the world had ever known, the warring powers faced a crisis. There were no good military options. Money, men, and supplies were running short on all sides. The German chancellor secretly sought President Woodrow Wilson's mediation to end the war, just as British ministers and France's president also concluded that the time was right. The Road Less Traveled describes how tantalizingly close these far-sighted statesmen came to ending the war, saving millions of lives, and avoiding the total war that dimmed hopes for a better world. Theirs was a secret battle that is only now becoming fully understood, a story of civic courage, awful responsibility, and how some leaders rose to the occasion while others shrank from it or chased other ambitions. "Peace is on the floor waiting to be picked up!" pleaded the German ambassador to the United States. This book explains both the strategies and fumbles of people facing a great crossroads of history. The Road Less Traveled reveals one of the last great mysteries of the Great War: that it simply never should have lasted so long or cost so much.

Chinese Music in Print by YANG YUANZHENG Pdf

Grounded in a desire to bring back to life rare items from the University of Hong Kong’s Fung Ping Shan Library that are entwined within the world of music and to place them in a context of books and images in American, British, and other Asian collections, Chinese Music in Print views the library as a repository not of information but of artifact, and then uses these artifacts as a means for generating scholarly narrative. It begins by assessing seminal texts in the Confucian canon set against the delicacy of the concubine and amanuensis Shen Cai’s calligraphy and poetry. Confucianism was itself a crucial aspect of courtly life, and an exploration of its ritual is the book’s second theme. Vernacular genres of opera and song are represented in the third chapter, while the Great Sage returns in the fourth for an exploration of the repertoire and richness of his favourite instrument, the qin. The final chapter ends the journey with discussion of the legacy of generations of Europeans who have visited China and their contribution to the understanding of a more vernacular instrument, the erhu. “Like the 2021 exhibition called ‘Music in Print’ that preceded it, this exploration of Chinese music history introduces many rare books from the University of Hong Kong Libraries. The essays combine professional expertise in musicology with an excellent grasp of traditional bibliography, which allows the one to illuminate the other. Bravo!” —J. S. Edgren, Princeton University “I am most impressed by the critical reading of the author who excels in classical studies, whose expertise in calligraphy, seals, editions, and other related disciplines in Sinology is admirable. His meticulous investigation into the complicated situation regarding the book printing business of dynastic China is professional and convincing.” —Yu Siu-wah, chief editor of Anthology of Chinese Folk and Ethnic Instrumental Music: The Hong Kong Volume “Such a wide-ranging but meticulously researched book that now contextualizes the dissemination and transmission of music into the discussion of manuscript and printed culture in China will clearly be an important addition to the holdings of libraries supporting Chinese studies and book studies broadly taken, as well as those supporting the study of music. Obviously, it will be of direct importance for specialists in East Asian book studies and for musicologists of East Asian traditions.” —Elizabeth Markham, University of Arkansas “This beautifully illustrated and carefully edited book is the first English-language monograph dedicated exclusively to the history of Chinese music as captured through the medium of print. It introduces a host of new sources and methodologies to the English-speaking public, fruitfully complicates established narratives of music history and of print cultures in both East and West, and offers a vital building-block for the creation of a truly global music history.” —Karl Kügle, University of Oxford
