Feminist Perspectives Towards Shashi Deshpande's Novels by Piu Sarkar Pdf

Shashi Deshpande is one of the most fascinating writers in the genre of Indian English writing to have addressed problems and issues related to women and society, breaking the traditional image of a woman as a daughter, wife or mother, exploring the inner psychological conflicts of a woman and making her women characters emerge as self-dependent individuals with a space of one’s own. Through her bunch of wonderful novels Shashi Deshpande aims to highlight that everyone in this society should be treated as equals, as human beings; there should not be any compartmentalization on the basis of gender. Women should be given equal opportunity and weightage at par with men. This is possible only when women are independent in truest sense and they hold self-reliance and self-esteem. As a writer of human beings in general and women in particular, Shashi Deshpande has wonderfully considered all these aspects in her writings with her ingenious narrative skill and creative spirit. This book has attempted to explore the journey of Deshpande’s protagonists in quest of an exclusive identity, which has the essence of individuality and self-confidence and which make them stand apart from the stereotypical tags given by traditional patriarchal society. Amidst hindrances and oppressions of various kinds how Deshpande’s women characters come out of their shell to carve a niche for themselves by utilizing their potential and willpower has formed the crux of the book. Comprehensive and analytical in nature, the present book would prove an asset to students of English literature.

Image of Woman in the Novels of Shashi Deshpande by Dr. Varsha P. Zanwar Pdf

Though not an avowed feminist, Shashi Deshpande occupies a significant place among the contemporary women novelists who concern themselves with the problems of women and their quest for identity. Her creative talent and accomplishment have established her credentials as a worthy successor and contemporary to the Indian English writers such as Desai, Shobha De, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Bharati Mukherjee etc. In this book, two novels by Shashi Deshpande – 1. The Dark Holds No Terrors. 2. That Long Silence are studied in detail for the sake to find image of woman in both the novels. Shashi Deshpande's novel "The Dark Holds No Terrors", seeks to discuss the male ego which refuses to accept a secondary position in marriage. The novel narrated the harrowing experiences of the protagonist 'Sarita', who enjoys a greater economic and social status than her husband Manohar. Deshpande also makes the readers aware of society's reaction to the superior status of the wife in a marriage, which leads the husband to develop an inferiority complex. The novel also seeks to discuss the blatant gender discrimination which is shown even by parents towards their daughters. Deshpande effectively conveys the craving by parents for a male child and the disastrous effect it can have on a sensitive going girl. Denied of parental love and victim of her husband's frustrations, 'Sarita' undergoes an arduous journey into herself and liberates herself from guilt, shame and humiliation to emerge in full control over her life. Shashi Deshpande's novel, "That Long Silence", brought her into limelight as it was rewarded by the prestigious "Sahitya Academy Award". The novel deals with the protagonist Jaya's passage through a mare of self doubts and fears towards the affirmation of herself. A crisis in the middle-class family of the protagonist triggers off a chain of events which compel her to view her life in retrospection. What follows is an honest and frank account of Jaya's life. In her anxiety to play the role of wife and mother to perfection. Jaya realizes that she does not do justice to her talents as a writer. Her constant fear of displeasing her husband and inviting the censure of society, not only make her give up writing but also discourage her from acknowledging her friendship with a man who is not her husband, brother or father. The novel focuses Jaya as a representative of the modern young woman - educated and aware - nevertheless unable to break free from the strangle - hold of tradition. In the process of telling her story, she offers us a glimpse into the lives of ostensibly content housewives who are nevertheless suppressed under the weight of male dominance. Thus this book helps to find out image of woman in these novels. I record my gratefulness to the principal of J.E.S. College, Jalna- Dr. R. S. Agrawal, Head of the Department of English- M.A. Sami Siddiqui for support and encouragement at every stage of my work. I also offer my sincere thanks to the senior teachers of my Department for their valuable suggestions. I feel deeply to put into words my sense of thankfulness to my family.

The Quest for Identity in Shashi Deshpande's "That Long Silence" (1988) by Krishna Priya J. Pdf

Essay from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, , course: M.A, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the feminist perspective of Shashi Deshpande's "That Long Silence" (1988). This novel won the Sahitya Akademi award in the year 1990. In this novel, the soul protagonist is Jaya, whose complete control was taken over by her husband Mohan, after their marriage. Deshpande realistically depicts the inner conflicts of Jaya and her quest for the self or identity. This novel is about gender discrimination and inequality prevalent in society. God created men and women equally, but the women’s rights were limited to small. Feminism as a movement might have originated in the West, but with the deterioration in the status of women in India and the subsequent efforts made during the freedom struggle to pave the way for equal access to education and equal status, there arose a need for feminist studies. The feminist movement advocates equal rights and equal opportunities for women. Feminism was portrayed by many writers of English literature and one among them is Shashi Deshpandae (1938).

LIFE AND WORK OF KAMALA MARKANDAYA AND SHASHI DESHPANDE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY by Sanjana Antil Pdf

It is said that literature is a reflection of society, the author as well as his/her literature is the product of it. It is also said that literature is the product of a given milieu and individual sensibility which constitute together a culture entity rooted in the changing traditional value system of people. The writer, as a human being, is a part and parcel of the society and so, naturally he gets influenced by the atmosphere around him. Therefore the literature coming out through him becomes the manifestation of the cultural, social, spiritual and political scenario in the society. Kamala Markandaya is one of the leading women novelists of India. She has projected the theme of cultural clashes in different dimensions. She has produced several novels to her credit. Her novels find forceful expression of cultural clashes such as conflict between Tradition and modernity, clash between the rural and urban, East-West conflict and conflict between the two different attitudes of life from two diverse races. Kamala Markandaya has brought to the centre her protagonists who are invariably women, and therefore conflicts raised by the novelist relate to women. All the characters in her novels experience troubles and turmoil's in life but they rise above their desperation triumphantly because of their aspiration. It is a fact that Markandaya commands a wide reputation as a creator of readable novels; she has received a wide-ranging recognition and applause both in India and abroad. She has been a subject of serious discussion. But it is very surprising to note that an Indian woman novelist who has got a prominent position in India writing in English has not been able ii to draw the attention of critics and researchers to the extent she deserves. The articles in books and journals by their very nature remain confined to studying her novels as individual works. Book-length studies of Markandaya's novels are only a few. The proposed book will focus its attention on the conflict of nature in the novels of Kamala Markandaya through the discussion of the central characters. It will do its level best to fill in the gap and will attempt to study Markandaya's novels. Shashi Deshpande is one of the prominent writers who in the past two and a half decades established herself as a serious writer. She is undoubtedly an outstanding Indian English novelist who has boldly voiced the issues and sufferings of women in her works. She has projected this aspect of Indian women with more sensitivity and understanding as she was born and brought up in this soil. This work is to analyze about the works of Shasi Deshpandae and sense her to be a Feminist or Humanist. The themes of sexuality and man-woman relationship initially introduced in her stories are discussed which became the subject of full length novels. But they are found not merely the raw material for her novels. Her versatile treatment of women's issues reveals her sensitive nature as a woman writer, and this quality affirms her works as an outstanding contribution to Indian literature in English proving her to be a humanist. Crossing the Barriers : A Study of Shashi Deshpande’s Fiction by Dr. Sunita Goyal Pdf

About the book The book is a compact and authoritative study of the female characters in Deshpande's novels from psychoanalytical point of view using mainly Karen Horney's theory of neurosis and the theories of a few other Western feminist theorists and feminist psychoanalysts such as Carol Gilligan, Virginia Woolf, Nancy Chodorow, Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, Juliet Mitchell, Luce Irigaray, Helene Cixous and Julia Kristeva. These theories attempt to trace the causes of conflicts and neuroses in women, their coping strategies, their self-analyses and their journey towards reconciliation when they start articulating their individual urge and asserting their selves not only as daughters, wives and mothers but also as autonomous and self-actualized women. Thorough in content, stimulating in approach, here is an invaluable companion to Deshpande's texts.
