Highland Shepherd by Alan Wilson Pdf
In 1786, the Reverend James MacGregor (1759–1830) was dispatched across the North Atlantic to establish a dissenting Presbyterian church in Pictou, Nova Scotia. The decision dismayed MacGregor, who had hoped for a post in the Scottish Highlands. Yet it led to a remarkable career in what was still the backwoods of colonial North America. Industrious and erudite, MacGregor established the progressive Pictou Academy, opposed slavery, and promoted scientific education, agriculture, and industry. Poet and translator, fluent in nine languages, he encouraged the preservation of the Gaelic language and promoted Scottish culture in Nova Scotia. Highland Shepherd finally bestows on MacGregor the recognition that he so richly deserves. Alan Wilson brings MacGregor and his surroundings to life, detailing his numerous achievements and establishing his importance to the social, religious, and intellectual history of the Maritimes.

Cape Bretoniana by Beaton Institute of Cape Breton Studies Pdf
Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island is a beautiful region with a unique community whose history and ethnic composition have resulted in the evolution of a powerful sense of identity and place. While outsiders may think only of the island's perennial economic woes and long economic dependence on coal mining and steel production, it is also the home of a rich, vibrant, and distinct culture. Brian Douglas Tennyson's Cape Bretoniana is the first bibliography to gather together all known publications relating to the history, culture, economy, and politics of Cape Breton Island. With more than 6000 entries, it not only provides a comprehensive listing of publications and post-graduate theses, but also detailed annotations on the listings. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, volume and issue number in the case of periodicals, and page references, followed by a brief description of the item. Cape Breton has never been so thoroughly documented. This bibliography will help to ensure that ? even in a world becoming increasingly homogenized by the forces of globalization ? unique cultural identities like Cape Breton's can be preserved and nurtured.

Memoir of the Rev. James Macgregor, D.D (Classic Reprint) by George Patterson Pdf
Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. James Macgregor, D.D These reasons were strongly enforced by the additional con sideration, that the time is going by, when the work could be done in any thing like a satisfactory manner. Most if not all of Dr. Macgregor's cotemporaries are gone. There are but one or two persons living, who knew him previous to his arrival in this country, and these are now in their dotage. Those who had reached years of maturity when he arrived in Nova Scotia, are all gone to the land of deep forgetfulness, and in a few years there will be none living able to speak from personal knowledge of his early toils. The written documents, which throw light on his history are also perishing, and many are irre coverably gone. There is a time for every thing, but the time for doing justice to the memory of Dr. Macgregor is nearly past. But in a short time it will have gone for ever, and what is now dificult will be then impossible, and what can now only be done imperfectly can then not be done at all. And during the collecting of the materials for the following memoir, the writer has had many warnings to remember the divine admoni tion, Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might. Several individuals, who might have afi'orded infor mation have passed away, while he was contemplating an efi'ort to obtain their reminiscences, or he has visited others, only to find their memory a blank, and their intellect quenched by dis ease or infirmity.
