Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Paul Waring,Martin Townsend Pdf

This latest edition of the Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland has been fully revised, updated and restructured, bringing it in line with the latest thinking in taxonomy. Moths are illustrated in their natural resting postures, and there are also paintings of different forms, underwings and other details to help with identification. New descriptions and illustrations have been included for species that have been newly recorded in Britain and Ireland since the last edition of the guide was published. The text descriptions of all other species – covering field characters and similar species, flight season, life cycle, larval foodplants, and habitat – have been revised and updated where necessary, and particular attention has been paid to updating the distribution information, which is now supported by maps. The revised general introduction explains how the methods of identifying and recording moths have evolved over recent years with the advent of new technologies and as a result of data analysis.

Tortricidae, part 1 by Keith P. Bland,E.F. Hancock (†),J. Razowski Pdf

In Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, volume 5, Keith P. Bland offers a comprehensive account of the British members of the moth family TORTRICIDAE sensu lato. For ease of handling, it is divided into two Volumes: Part 1, the Tortricinae & Chlidanotinae, and Part 2, the Olethreutinae. Each volume is self-contained and indexed separately. For each species there is included a full taxonomy, a description of the adult moth, an account of the larval stages and its life history. The up-to-date British distribution for each species is given as maps showing vice-county occurrence, supported with further detail where relevant. Each species is illustrated by means of one or more coloured photographs of mounted specimens, proportionally sized. For all species, the male and female genitalia are depicted by Josef Razowski’s excellent line drawings. Besides an index to the moth species, there is a comprehensive index to larval food substrates. The original text was formed by the late E.F. (‘Ted’) Hancock and extended and updated by Keith P. Bland. Photographs of the adult moths were done by the latter and line drawings of the genitalia were all done by Josef Razowski.

The Natural History of Moths by Mark Young Pdf

The Natural History of Moths covers all aspects of moth biology and ecology. Moths are often as beautiful as butterflies, and with more than 2,000 species on the British list they are more numerous, more diverse and occupy a far wider variety of habitats and lifestyles. Yet for most naturalists they remain a little-known and neglected group. Not since E. B. Ford's 1955 New Naturalist volume has the biology of moths been treated in a popular book. Here, Mark Young sets out to redress this imbalance and to show the great variety and interest of these sometimes striking, sometimes subtle insects. He draws together the results of amateur study and the latest scientific research to paint a broad picture of all aspects of moth biology, brought to life with many fascinating examples from the moth faunas of Britain and abroad. The breeding, feeding, distribution and life-history ecology of moths are described, in addition to more specialised aspects of their biology, such as pheromone attraction of mates, interactions with host plants, and the anti-predator responses that many moths use to foil bats and birds. While butterfly conservation problems have often provided headline news in the press, the difficulties facing moths have received much less attention. However, threats arising from the loss and degradation of natural habitats have had no less effect on moths, and have endangered many more species. The status and fortunes of many moths are still unknown, but a growing number of success stories. such as that of the Black-veined Moth, point the way to better practice for the future, and to the preservation of this enormous wealth of beauty, diversity and natural history interest.

Outlines of Entomology by R. G. Davies Pdf

The present edition may be regarded as a descendant, much changed and greatly enlarged, of the late Dr A. D. Imms' Outlines of Entomology, first published in 1942. This went through three further editions without much change, but after the death of the original author a fifth, revised edition by Professor o. W. Richards and myself appeared in 1959 and a sixth in 1978. The book now appears in a considerably extended version in which I have tried to provide a more balanced introduction to the whole field of modern entomology by dealing with several aspects of the subject not discussed at all in previous editions. Thus, in addition to innumerable lesser changes in the sections on insect structure, function, development, classification and phylogeny, I have completely recast the earlier chapter on some important modes of life in insects. This now includes a far wider range of biological topic;s well exemplified by the insects and should, I hope, appeal not only to, those already dedicated to entomology but also to others with more general biological interests. A completely new chapter on the biology of insect populations has also been added and may serve to indicate the debt which modern ecological theory owes to work on insect populations. It should hardly be necessary to apologize for introducing a certain amount of elementary mathematics into this account of a subject which is now among the most highly quantitative of biological disciplines.

British Pyralid Moths by Barry Goater,Geoffrey Senior,Robert Dyke Pdf

No other book in print covers the British species of the family Pyralidae, which includes such familiar species as the Mother of Pearl, the China-marks and the Grass Moths. All 208 species are clearly described in the text and all are illustrated photographically in the 272 figures on the colour plates, showing sexual dimorphism and different colour forms. The text gives a concise description of each species and its more striking races or forms, aided, where necessary, by line-drawings. Information is included on life histories, habits, seasonal occurrence, geographical distribution and host-plants. There is also a check list of the British Pyralidae.
