A First Course in Coding Theory by Raymond Hill Pdf

Algebraic coding theory is a new and rapidly developing subject, popular for its many practical applications and for its fascinatingly rich mathematical structure. This book provides an elementary yet rigorous introduction to the theory of error-correcting codes. Based on courses given by the author over several years to advanced undergraduates and first-year graduated students, this guide includes a large number of exercises, all with solutions, making the book highly suitable for individual study.

A First Course in Real Analysis by Sterling K. Berberian Pdf

Mathematics is the music of science, and real analysis is the Bach of mathematics. There are many other foolish things I could say about the subject of this book, but the foregoing will give the reader an idea of where my heart lies. The present book was written to support a first course in real analysis, normally taken after a year of elementary calculus. Real analysis is, roughly speaking, the modern setting for Calculus, "real" alluding to the field of real numbers that underlies it all. At center stage are functions, defined and taking values in sets of real numbers or in sets (the plane, 3-space, etc.) readily derived from the real numbers; a first course in real analysis traditionally places the emphasis on real-valued functions defined on sets of real numbers. The agenda for the course: (1) start with the axioms for the field ofreal numbers, (2) build, in one semester and with appropriate rigor, the foun dations of calculus (including the "Fundamental Theorem"), and, along the way, (3) develop those skills and attitudes that enable us to continue learning mathematics on our own. Three decades of experience with the exercise have not diminished my astonishment that it can be done.

First Course in the Theory of Equations (Classic Reprint) by Leonard Eugene Dickson Pdf

Excerpt from First Course in the Theory of Equations It was to meet the numerous needs of the student in regard to his earlier and future mathematical courses that the present book was planned with great care and after wide consultation. It. Din'ers essentially from the author's Elementary Theory of Equations, both in regard to omissions and additions, and since it is addressed to younger students and may be used parallel with a course in differential calculus. Simpler and more detailed proofs are now employed. The exercises are simpler, more numerous, of greater variety and involve more practical applications. This book throws important light on various elementary topics. For example, an alert. Student of geometry who has learned how to bisect auv angle is apt to ask if every angle can be trisected with ruler and compasses and if not, why not. After learning how to construct regular polygons of 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 sides, he will be inquisitive about the missing ones of 7 and 9 sides. The teacher will be in a comfortable position if he knows the facts and what. Is involved in the simplest discussion to date of these questions, as given in Chapter III. Other chapters throw needed light on various topics of algebra. In particular, the theory of graphs is presented in Chapter V in a more scientific and practical manner than was possible in algebra and analytic geometry. Practical Mathematics for Beginners by Frank Castle Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Mathematics for Beginners The view that engineers and skilled artizans can be given a mathematical training through the agency of the calculations they are actually called upon to make at their work, steadily gains in popularity. The ordinary method of spending many years upon the formal study of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and the calculus may be of value in the development of the logical faculty, but it is unsuitable for the practical man, because he has neither the time nor the inclination to study along academic lines. But though Practical Mathematics secures more and more adherents, the subject is still in a tentative stage. The recent revision of the syllabus issued by the Board of Education only two years after its first appearance, is evidence of this. The present volume is designed to help students in classes where the new course of work issued from South Kensington forms the basis of the lessons of the winter session. Such students are supposed to be familiar with the simple rules of arithmetic, including vulgar fractions, hence the present volume commences with the decimal system of notation. The modern contracted methods of calculation, which are so useful in practical problems, are not taught in many schools and they are therefore introduced at an early stage. In the extensive range of subjects included in the present volume care has been taken to avoid all work that partakes of the mere puzzle order, and only those processes of constant practical value have been introduced. Since, in mathematical teaching especially, "example is better than precept," a prominent place is given to typical worked out examples. In nearly ail cases these are such as occur very frequently in the workshop or drawing office. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
