Within the Sanctuary of Wings by Marie Brennan Pdf

Within the Sanctuary of Wings is the conclusion to Marie Brennan's thrilling Lady Trent Memoirs After nearly five decades (and, indeed, the same number of volumes), one might think they were well-acquainted with the Lady Isabella Trent--dragon naturalist, scandalous explorer, and perhaps as infamous for her company and feats of daring as she is famous for her discoveries and additions to the scientific field. And yet--after her initial adventure in the mountains of Vystrana, and her exploits in the depths of war-torn Eriga, to the high seas aboard The Basilisk, and then to the inhospitable deserts of Akhia--the Lady Trent has captivated hearts along with fierce minds. This concluding volume will finally reveal the truths behind her most notorious adventure--scaling the tallest peak in the world, buried behind the territory of Scirland's enemies--and what she discovered there, within the Sanctuary of Wings. The Lady Trent Memoirs 1. A Natural History of Dragons 2. The Tropic of Serpents 3. Voyage of the Basilisk 4. In the Labyrinth of Drakes 5. Fitting Ends by Dan Chaon Pdf

Fitting Ends is the first collection of fiction by the acclaimed author of the National Book Award finalist Among the Missing and now appears in this newly revised edition with two never before collected stories. Written before Among the Missing and originally published by Northwestern University Press, Fitting Ends features thirteen stories detailing the almost panicked angst of the American generation now approaching thirty. Struggling with gaps between youthful expectations and adult experiences, these characters long for understanding and acceptance—but are thwarted by failed love, family disruptions, numbing work, and sexual confusion. Chaon is one of the most promising new voices in fiction, and this re-issued collection offers further evidence of his unique talent. “The best of these stories . . . possess a rare, disorienting force. When you look up from them, the quality of light seems a little different. It’s a reminder to those of us who have almost forgotten what literature can sometimes do.” —Boston Book Review “The most honest, observant and timely book written this year about the American generation now approaching thirty . . . Chaon speaks with clarity of feeling, and more than a little oddball wit, about the lives of those left behind the demographic curve of America—men and woman with pointless jobs, doughy faces, soured relationships, bad credit. . . . Each story pulls you into its subtle emotional vortex, largely because of Chaon’s knack for simple but poignant detail.” —New York Newsday “Remarkable . . . Each story is a marvel of complexity, dense with meaning and nuance. . . . Very few first works are as solid, moving, and pitch-perfect as Chaon’s.” —The Cleveland Plain Dealer “[AN] OFTEN PERCEPTIVE, LUCID VOICE.” —The New York Times Book Review

The End of Men by Christina Sweeney-Baird Pdf

Set in a world where a virus stalks our male population, The End of Men is an electrifying and unforgettable debut from a remarkable new talent that asks: what would life truly look like without men? Only men are affected by the virus; only women have the power to save us all. The year is 2025, and a mysterious virus has broken out in Scotland--a lethal illness that seems to affect only men. When Dr. Amanda MacLean reports this phenomenon, she is dismissed as hysterical. By the time her warning is heeded, it is too late. The virus becomes a global pandemic--and a political one. The victims are all men. The world becomes alien--a women's world. What follows is the immersive account of the women who have been left to deal with the virus's consequences, told through first-person narratives. Dr. MacLean; Catherine, a social historian determined to document the human stories behind the "male plague;" intelligence analyst Dawn, tasked with helping the government forge a new society; and Elizabeth, one of many scientists desperately working to develop a vaccine. Through these women and others, we see the uncountable ways the absence of men has changed society, from the personal--the loss of husbands and sons--to the political--the changes in the workforce, fertility and the meaning of family. In The End of Men, Christina Sweeney-Baird creates an unforgettable tale of loss, resilience and hope.

Dudley Sports Football Club by Joe Forrest Pdf

As the year comes to an end, with all of us isolated from each other by this pandemic, I realize that the football club in which I have been heavily involved in is now 40 years old. I decided to put down in words those who care to share my memories of the club. The best place to start, so I’m told, is at the very beginning, so that would be 1976. (Yes, I know that is more than 40 years ago.) I had recently left lye town football club and really had no more interest in any involvement with football. Joan and I started to frequent the birch coppice pub on Friday nights, where we always met up with a great bunch of lads from quarry bank. Several of these lads all worked together at M&G trailers in lye and played for the local football team, Dunn’s banks rovers. During a conversation, I was told the manager at M&G trailers wanted to speak to me. As I pointed out, I was not looking for a job, so I inquired as to why he wanted to see me. It turned out he himself managed a local works team in Brierley hill and was looking for someone to take over the first team. my initial feelings were forget it, I’m not interested, but after several of the lads continuously bringing it up every week, it got to the point I said I would go along and meet this bloke, really, just out of courtesy. So up to the trailers I go, ask if I can see the works manager and become bombarded with questions: what’s your name, have you got an appointment, what is it about. I was just about to say ‘bollocks I’m off' when this bloke pops his head round the corner. “Are you Joe, I’m Alan bishop”. That was the start of a great friendship with Alan and his wife Shirley.
