A Framework for Strategic Planning in Multinational Corporations (Classic Reprint) by Peter Lorange Pdf

Excerpt from A Framework for Strategic Planning in Multinational Corporations Strategic planning in a multinational corporation has a two - fold task: to identify the strategic Options most relevant to the corporation and to narrow down these Options into the one best plan. Stated this way there is of course nothing fundamentally different between the stra tegic planning task of a multinational corporation and that of any other large corporation. However, since multinationals Offer several complex and distinctively different approaches to organizational design and planning, it is useful to examine some Of the problems of strategic planning in the context Of the multinationals. The broad definition Of the strategic planning tasks given above has several implications. In order to be able to identify the most relevant strategic Options, the corporation needs to adapt continuously to the environment. Also, in order to narrow down the strategic Options into the one best plan, the corporation must be able to integrate its many diverse activities. In this article we shall attempt to clarify the major purposes of planning in the multinationals in terms Of adap tation and integration needs. Cultural Influences on the Process of Strategic Management by Andreas Michael Schühly Pdf

This unique book is positioned at the crossroads of strategic management and international business. Based on an in-depth literature review, the author empirically assesses the widely shared, implicit assumption that strategic management processes can be globally applied in a standardized, i.e., culture-free, manner. So far, a variety of tools have also been recommended but without incorporating cultural differences. As many organizations observe that this ethnocentric view is more an illusion than reality, strategic management research has started to focus on the cultural sensitivity of its theories, tools, and processes to provide practitioners in a multicultural setting with adequate know-how and tools. To foster long-term decision-making despite uncertainty, scenario planning is frequently applied by practitioners. Up until today, scenario planning has however gained little attention from the academic community. Through this book, the author presents a newly developed framework for strategic management that combines the cultural value scale to test the cultural sensitivity of the long-term planning tool called "scenario planning." The different process steps of scenario planning have been individually examined for their sensitivity toward the cultural dimensions of uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation. The investigation is based on a unique, global set of management consultants working for a leading professional service firm. The results of this research show the cultural sensitivity of scenario planning, with different degrees of the process steps and the tested cultural dimensions.

Diagnosis and Design of Strategic Planning Systems in Diversified Corporations (Classic Reprint) by Peter Lorange Pdf

Excerpt from Diagnosis and Design of Strategic Planning Systems in Diversified Corporations A second purpose of planning, however, springs from the need to cope with discontinuities in the firm's environment and to seize new Opportunities and avoid arising threats. Scanning the environment for relevant data, developing new programs in attractive business areas, taking advantage of the firm's strengths and providing for unforseen contingencies comprise a second aspect of long-range planning activity that we might label adaptive planning. Multinational Corporate Evolution and Subsidiary Development by Julian Birkinshaw Pdf

This book is one of the first to specifically address the subsidiary development process - a phenomenon by which multinational company subsidiaries enhance their resources and capabilities. It shows how this process is integral to multinational corporate evolution, which is largely driven by changes in subsidiaries and their development. It also illustrates how the recent trend towards greater international dispersal of value-adding activities has impacted on this process and on multinational evolution as a whole.

Your Strategy Needs a Strategy by Martin Reeves,Knut Haanaes Pdf

You think you have a winning strategy. But do you? Executives are bombarded with bestselling ideas and best practices for achieving competitive advantage, but many of these ideas and practices contradict each other. Should you aim to be big or fast? Should you create a blue ocean, be adaptive, play to win—or forget about a sustainable competitive advantage altogether? In a business environment that is changing faster and becoming more uncertain and complex almost by the day, it’s never been more important—or more difficult—to choose the right approach to strategy. In this book, The Boston Consulting Group’s Martin Reeves, Knut Haanæs, and Janmejaya Sinha offer a proven method to determine the strategy approach that is best for your company. They start by helping you assess your business environment—how unpredictable it is, how much power you have to change it, and how harsh it is—a critical component of getting strategy right. They show how existing strategy approaches sort into five categories—Be Big, Be Fast, Be First, Be the Orchestrator, or simply Be Viable—depending on the extent of predictability, malleability, and harshness. In-depth explanations of each of these approaches will provide critical insight to help you match your approach to strategy to your environment, determine when and how to execute each one, and avoid a potentially fatal mismatch. Addressing your most pressing strategic challenges, you’ll be able to answer questions such as: • What replaces planning when the annual cycle is obsolete? • When can we—and when should we—shape the game to our advantage? • How do we simultaneously implement different strategic approaches for different business units? • How do we manage the inherent contradictions in formulating and executing different strategies across multiple businesses and geographies? Until now, no book brings it all together and offers a practical tool for understanding which strategic approach to apply. Get started today.
