A Generalization of Riemann Mappings and Geometric Structures on a Space of Domains in C$^n$ by Stephen Semmes Pdf

Similar in philosophy to the study of moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, the central theme of this book is that spaces of (pseudoconvex) domains should admit geometrical structures that reflect the complex geometry of the underlying domains in a natural way. With its unusual geometric perspective of some topics in several complex variables, this book appeals to those who view much of mathematics in broadly geometrical terms.

Real Methods in Complex and CR Geometry by Marco Abate,John Erik Fornaess,Xiaojun Huang,Jean-Pierre Rosay,Alexander Tumanov Pdf

The geometry of real submanifolds in complex manifolds and the analysis of their mappings belong to the most advanced streams of contemporary Mathematics. In this area converge the techniques of various and sophisticated mathematical fields such as P.D.E.s, boundary value problems, induced equations, analytic discs in symplectic spaces, complex dynamics. For the variety of themes and the surprisingly good interplaying of different research tools, these problems attracted the attention of some among the best mathematicians of these latest two decades. They also entered as a refined content of an advanced education. In this sense the five lectures of this volume provide an excellent cultural background while giving very deep insights of current research activity.

Harmonic and Complex Analysis in Several Variables by Steven G. Krantz Pdf

Authored by a ranking authority in harmonic analysis of several complex variables, this book embodies a state-of-the-art entrée at the intersection of two important fields of research: complex analysis and harmonic analysis. Written with the graduate student in mind, it is assumed that the reader has familiarity with the basics of complex analysis of one and several complex variables as well as with real and functional analysis. The monograph is largely self-contained and develops the harmonic analysis of several complex variables from the first principles. The text includes copious examples, explanations, an exhaustive bibliography for further reading, and figures that illustrate the geometric nature of the subject. Each chapter ends with an exercise set. Additionally, each chapter begins with a prologue, introducing the reader to the subject matter that follows; capsules presented in each section give perspective and a spirited launch to the segment; preludes help put ideas into context. Mathematicians and researchers in several applied disciplines will find the breadth and depth of the treatment of the subject highly useful.

This is the second part of a two volume anthology comprising a selection of 49 articles that illustrate the depth, breadth and scope of Nigel Kalton’s research. Each article is accompanied by comments from an expert on the respective topic, which serves to situate the article in its proper context, to successfully link past, present and hopefully future developments of the theory and to help readers grasp the extent of Kalton’s accomplishments. Kalton’s work represents a bridge to the mathematics of tomorrow, and this book will help readers to cross it. Nigel Kalton (1946-2010) was an extraordinary mathematician who made major contributions to an amazingly diverse range of fields over the course of his career.

The Inverse Problem of the Calculus of Variations for Ordinary Differential Equations by Ian Anderson,Gerard Thompson Pdf

This monograph explores various aspects of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for systems of ordinary differential equations. The main problem centers on determining the existence and degree of generality of Lagrangians whose system of Euler-Lagrange equations coincides with a given system of ordinary differential equations. The authors rederive the basic necessary and sufficient conditions of Douglas for second order equations and extend them to equations of higher order using methods of the variational bicomplex of Tulcyjew, Vinogradov, and Tsujishita. What emerges is a fundamental dichotomy between second and higher order systems: the most general Lagrangian for any higher order system can depend only upon finitely many constants. The authors present an algorithm, based upon exterior differential systems techniques, for solving the inverse problem for second order equations. A number of new examples illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. The monograph also contains a study of the inverse problem for a pair of geodesic equations arising from a two dimensional symmetric affine connection. The various possible solutions to the inverse problem for these equations are distinguished by geometric properties of the Ricci tensor.

On Sets Not Belonging to Algebras of Subsets by Leonid Š. Grinblat Pdf

The main results of this work can be formulated in such an elementary way that it is likely to attract mathematicians from a broad spectrum of specialties, though its main audience will likely be combintorialists, set-theorists, and topologists. The central question is this: Suppose one is given an at most countable family of algebras of subsets of some fixed set such that, for each algebra, there exists at least one set that is not a member of that algebra. Can one then assert that there is a set that is not a member of any of the algebras? Although such a set clearly exists in the case of one or two algebras, it is very easy to construct an example of three algebras for which no such set can be found. Grinblat's principal concern is to determine conditions that, if imposed on the algebras, will insure the existence of a set not belonging to any of them. If the given family of algebras is finite, one arrives at a purely combinatorial problem for a finite set of ultrafilters. If the family is countably infinite, however, one needs not only combinatorics of ultrafilters but also set theory and general topology.

Complex Analysis and Geometry by Pierre Dolbeault,A. Iordan,G. Henkin,H. Skoda,J.-M. Trepreau Pdf

This meeting has been motivated by two events: the 85th birthday of Pierre Lelong, and the end of the third year of the European network "Complex analysis and analytic geometry" from the programme Human Capital and Mobility. For the first event, Mathematicians from Poland, Sweden, United States and France, whose work is particularly related to the one ofP. Lelong have accepted to participate; for the second, the different teams of the Network sent lecturers to report on their most recent works. These teams are from Grenoble, Wuppertal, Berlin, Pisa and Paris VI; in fact, most of their results are also related to Lelong's work and, a posteriori, it is difficult to decide whether a talk is motivated by the first or by the second event. We chose only plenary lectures, usually of one hour, except a small number, given by young mathematicians, which have been shorter. A two hours problem session has been organized. The Proceedings gather papers which are exact texts of the talks, or are closely related to them. The members from the Network and five other lecturers sent us papers; the other lecturers published the content of their talks in mathematical Journals. All the presented texts have been submitted to referees independent of the organizing committee; the texts of the problems have been approved by their authors.

Encyclopaedia of Mathematics by Michiel Hazewinkel Pdf

This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathematics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical En cyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977 - 1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivision has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathe matics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, engineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
