The Rhetoric of Diversion in English Literature and Culture, 1690–1760 by Darryl P. Domingo Pdf

Why did eighteenth-century writers employ digression as a literary form of diversion, and how did their readers come to enjoy linguistic and textual devices that self-consciously disrupt the reading experience? Darryl P. Domingo answers these questions through an examination of the formative period in the commercialization of leisure in England, and the coincidental coming of age of literary self-consciousness in works published between approximately 1690 and 1760. During this period, commercial entertainers tested out new ways of gratifying a public increasingly eager for amusement, while professional writers explored the rhetorical possibilities of intrusion, obstruction, and interruption through their characteristic use of devices like digression. Such devices adopt similar forms and fulfil similar functions in literature as do diversions in culture: they 'unbend the mind' and reveal the complex reciprocity between commercialized leisure and commercial literature in the age of Swift, Pope, and Fielding.

Ghost industries by Irene Curulli Pdf

What is the role of water in the conversion of former industrial areas? How is water used in engaging the public to experience these sites both as physical and cultural places? Can ecological design foster the coexistence of industry and environment? The book addresses these core questions by examining the impact of the former Oregonian industry (1830-1940) on the Willamette River landscape and discussing how projects of transformation interpret the triangular interplay among industry, landscape and water. This book is a source of suggestions and ideas for scholars, students and professionals in architecture, landscape architecture, planning and their related fields who want to manage the urban landscapes successfully.

Corruption in Cuba by Sergio Díaz-Briquets,Jorge Pérez-López Pdf

While Fidel Castro maintains his longtime grip on Cuba, revolutionary scholars and policy analysts have turned their attention from how Castro succeeded (and failed), to how Castro himself will be succeeded - by a new government. This is a comprehensive analysis of corruption in Cuba, and prescriptions for minimizing it in the post-Castro era. While Fidel Castro maintains his longtime grip on Cuba, revolutionary scholars and policy analysts have turned their attention from how Castro succeeded (and failed), to how Castro himself will be succeeded - by a new government. Among the many questions to be answered is how the new government will deal with the corruption that has become endemic in Cuba. Even though combating corruption cannot be the central aim of post-Castro policy, Sergio Diaz-Briquets and Jorge Perez-Lopez suggest that, without a strong plan to thwart it, corruption will undermine the new economy, erode support for the new government, and encourage organized crime. In short, unless measures are taken to stem corruption, the new Cuba could be as messy as the old Cuba. Fidel Castro did not bring corruption to Cuba; he merely institutionalized it. Official corruption has crippled Cuba since the colonial period, but Castro's state-run monopolies, cronyism, and lack of accountability have made Cuba one of the world's most corrupt states
