Excerpt from A Glossary of the Dialect of the Hundred of Lonsdale, North and South of the Sands, in the County of Lancaster It will probably be remarked by some into whose hands the Glossary will pass, as it has been by the editor, that a considerable number of the words in the Glossary, jointly with their definitions, appear to have been taken bodily from Halliwell's Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words. This is explained by a note from the late Herbert Coleridge to Mr. Peacock, recommending him (in reference to a suggestion evidently originating with Mr. Peacock himself on going through Halliwell's Dictionary in connection with his own collections and researches) to mark all the words he might identify as belonging to that district of Lancashire the dialect of which he purposed to illustrate. In some instances the definitions attached to these words have been slightly modified, or, perhaps, remodelled; but, of the majority, it will be seen that they are left as copied by Mr. Peacock. In only a very few cases has the editor taken upon himself to introduce any new matter and, In these few, only with a view to illustration where illustration seemed to be called for, or likely to add to the interest of the Glossary itself. In every such case, whensoever the addition exceeds two or three words in length, the matter added is marked off from the context by brackets, and the syllable Ed. Is printed at its end. Excerpt from A Glossary of the Lancashire Dialect In these prefatory remarks it is not intended to do more than indicate, as briefly as possible, the general scope of the Glossary, and to offer such observations as seem absolutely necessary for the due comprehension of the plan pursued. The portion now published will amount, it is estimated, to rather more than a third of the Glossary proper. On its completion, the words themselves will be reprinted - apart from the meanings, notes, and illustrations - accompanied by a representation of the pronunciation according to the Glossic system of Mr. A. J. Ellis. This will be followed by a General Introduction, embodying remarks on the grammatical structure and peculiarities of the dialect, and on the variations of idiom and pronunciation as observable in the several districts of the county. It is proposed also to include, in this section of the work, an essay on the capabilities of the dialect and a bibliographical survey of its literature. A fairly well-defined difference exists between the dialect of the northern and southern portions of Lancashire. Excerpt from Dialect Glossary of Over 4, 000 Words and Idioms: Now in Use in the North Riding of Yorkshire Nearly half a century ago the writer began collecting the dialect words which he heard fall from the lips of the old folk at whose firesides he daily sat. In the course of time the list grew until something like five hundred words had been jotted down. About that time a Yorkshire Reading came into his possession. This contained a two-page glossary of about forty words, alphabetically arranged. Dating from that time, the idea of compiling a glossary was conceived. The result is the present work. So far as the compiler knows, no popular work of this character has been published. That a growing desire for such a glossary exists he fully believes. During the last ten or fifteen years the interest taken in the Folk Speech has greatly increased. Many there be who have come to know and appreciate the forcefulness and antiquity of that which, during the past, they unthinkingly, and for want of knowledge, considered as nothing better and nothing beyond the vulgar speech of the untutored country-folk. Latterly, however, a more intelligent acquaintance with the Folk Speech has brought about a new order of things. The discovery has been made that language is subject to the law of change - of fashion if you like. Hence, much which has been judged as vulgar had no better foundation in support of such a verdict than deploiable ignorance. For a moment let us consider the matter from one single standpoint, and this fact presents itself. Much of the early literature, both sacred and profane, proves beyond all doubt that the rude language of to-day was the polite speech of our forefathers. Again and again, in the works of those authors, whose MSS. date from 1400 to 1600, do we find their most brilliant thoughts presented to us in language which for generations has been considered unworthy of a place in polite literature.
