A Handbook of Rome and Its Environs (Classic Reprint) by John Murray Pdf

Excerpt from A Handbook of Rome and Its Environs Although the different routes leading to Rome are briefly noticed in the Introduction to the Handbook of Northern Italy, and more fully described in those of Northern and Central Italy, the following information may be useful to travellers who may not have these volumes at hand. A. The most direct and economical route from London and Paris will be by the Mont Cenis to Turin, and from there by Bologna, Florence, and Perugia, or from Bologna by Leghorn and Civita Vecchia. The inconvenience of crossing the Alps, which formerly deterred many from adopting it in winter, through fear of exposing themselves to a trajet of 10 hours by carriage between St. Michel and Susa, is now avoided, the journey being performed by rail since the opening in 1871 of the Great Tunnel between Modane and Bardoneche. Distance from London, by Calais, 1474 miles; steamer and railway charges, 10l. 5s. (11l. by express trains in Italy, where an additional 20 per cent, on the fares is charged); time employed in travelling, from Paris 55 hours, from Loudon 67, by trains corresponding with each other. B. From London to Rome, by Paris, Marseilles, Nice, Genoa, Spezzia, Leghorn, and Civita Vecchia. The inconvenience of this route for the present is, that the part of it between Mentone and Savona, and Sestri di Levante and Spezzia, must be performed by carriage, or between Nice and Spezzia by sea, but this will be soon removed by the completion of the Ligurian Railways. Expenses by railway, diligence and steamer, from London, about 11l. 10s.; time employed, 62 hours. C. From London to Rome by Paris, Nice, Mentone, by rail, from Meutone to Savona by carriage, from Savona to Sestri by rail, from there to Spezzia by carriage, and thence by rail to Rome; or from Nice to Leghorn by the excellent steamers of the Peirano-Danovato Company, and thence by railway; Sestri to Spezzia by carriage in 6-hrs.; thence by rail to Rome. Expense of travelling about 11l. 10s. In the early winter this will be perhaps the easiest, and for invalids the most convenient route; the journey, about 63 hours, not including necessary stoppages. D. London to Rome, by Paris to Nice (rail), thence to Genoa and Leghorn and Civita Vecchia by the steamers of the Peirano-Dauovaro Company; or from Leghorn to Rome by rail through Civita Vecchia. Expenses of travelling about 10l. 10s.; time employed 65 hrs. In the early winter the two latter routes will be the most convenient, especially for invalids. E. From London to Rome, by Paris, Munich, Inspruck, the Brenner Pass, Verona, Padua, Bologna, Florence, and Perugia. Distance from London, 1547 miles. Railway all the way from Calais: at present this is the only unbroken line of railway between Calais and Rome (intercepted during the war), as well as Routes A, B, C, D. Time employed in travelling, 71 1/2 hours; expenses, 11l. 16s. and 8l. 12s. F. Persons not wishing to pass through Paris, and by the Cenis Pass, can proceed by way of Calais, or Ostend to Brussels, Luxembourg to Strasburg and Munich, or from Brussels to Cologne, Mainz, and Munich, and thence to Rome, as in last route. Tickets are issued on this route from Strasburg and Munich to Rome, by which the traveller is allowed for luggage 25 kil., and can remain 30 days on his route. Fares from London by Calais and Brussels, about 12l. 4s. and 8l. 18s. Daring the present disastrous war, this is the most convenient route by which Italy generally and Rome can be reached. Excerpt from A Handbook of Rome and Its Environs: Forming Part II. Of the Handbook for Travellers in Central Italy The section which includes the Environs of Rome has been considerably extended, and, for the greater part, from the Editor's personal examinations whilst the notices on all the most important sites have been brought down to within the last few weeks, including the Excavations in progress amongst the ruins of 0stia, under the direction of the Papal Government, and the equally, if not more interesting discoveries on the Via Latina, due to the zeal of Sig. Fortunati. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Guide of Rome and the Environs: The Cheapest and Most Useful to Visitors It seems that King Romulus (753 B. Historic and Monumental Rome by Charles Isidore Hemans Pdf

Excerpt from Historic and Monumental Rome: A Handbook for the Students of Classical and Christian Antiquity in the Italian Capital Having been urged by friends and acquaintances to prepare a second edition of a work in two small volumes: The Story of Monuments in Rome and its Environs (florence, I have, seeing how much the aspects of the subject have changed and its field become enlarged within late years, not only amplified but entirely re-written my former work - and have incorporated in these pages, with more or less altera tion, several papers read before the British and Ameri can Archaeological Society in Rome. The ground of Christian antiquities in and near that city is one I have gone over, with fuller treatment than is here attempted, in another volume: Ancient Christianity and Sacred Art in Italy. Having quitted Rome in the Summer of 1873, and not returned thither since, I refer in these pages to the state of things there existent up to that time, alluding to Monasteries and Convents, where I have occasion to mention ruins on their pre mises, as though the Cloisters were still inhabited by their former inmates. The law for suppressing such institutions had been enacted by the Italian Parlia ment, but not carried, out, before the end of the month (june, 1873) in which I last saw the Eternal City after residing there for many years. Roman Mosaics by Former Professor of Business Policy Hugh MacMillan, (Hi,Hugh Macmillan Pdf

Excerpt from Roman Mosaics: Or Studies in Rome and Its Neighbourhood Many of the points touched upon have pro voked endless disputations which are not likely soon to be settled. Indeed there is hardly any line of study one can take up in connection with Rome which does not bristle with controversies; and a feeling of perplexity and uncertainty con tinually haunts one in regard to most of the subjects. It is not only in the vague field of the early traditions of the city, and of the medieval traditions of the Church, that this feeling op presses one; it exists everywhere, even in the more solid and assured world of Roman art, literature, and history. Where it is so difficult to arrive at settled convictions, I may be par doned if I have expressed views that are open to reconsideration. Old Rome by Robert Burn Pdf

Excerpt from Old Rome: A Handbook to the Ruins of the City and the Campagna This book is intended to serve as a handbook to the actually-existing ruins and monuments of ancient Rome and the Campagna. It is divided into topographical sections for the convenience of travellers visiting Rome, and the monuments which exist in each section have boon briefly described, and a summary given of their history and archaeological value. The introductory section contains general remarks upon the site, monumental history, and architecture of Rome; and in a section prefixed to Chapter IX. the nature of the soil and configuration of the hills and valleys of the district surrounding the city are stated. In the Appendix to the eighth chapter will be found a list of the chief monumental antiquities in the museums, galleries, and other public places. This has been thought to be useful, as these are often difficult to recognise from being mixed with so many other attractive and important objects of more modern art and history. All speculative conjectures as to the probable sites or constructions of ancient buildings or places have boon avoided. Such questions require more space than can be spared in so small a volume, and have been fully treated of in my larger work, "Rome and the Campagna." I have confined myself in this handbook to a brief topographical, archaeological, and historical description of each existing ruin or monument. The references given have been restricted to modern treatises and to a few of the more rarely read Greek and Latin authors.
