A Hero of Love and War by Thomas Morrow Pdf

Inspired by true events, A Hero of Love and War is a story of World War II bravery and heroism and the enduring power of love. The story begins in 1942 when Patricia Faust and her mother move into the upstairs apartment of the home owned by Will Bardon. As the relationship between Will and Patricia develops, Will and his widowed mother are devastated by the news that Will’s brother, Robert, has been killed in France. Will resolves that he can no longer sit idly by while others sacrifice their lives to defend their country. Over Patricia’s protests, he enlists in the army air force. On December 30, 1943, returning from a bombing run, Will’s plane is shot down over German-occupied France. Gravely wounded, Will spends nine days in the frigid Ardennes forest before he is found by French Résistance fighters. With his legs badly gangrened, the French fighters realize they have no alternative but to turn Will over to the Germans for medical treatment. Before they do, the French remove Will’s dog tags, which identify him as Jewish. Without his dog tags, Will’s identity remains unknown and he is reported missing in action. Believing the love of her life to have been killed in action, Patricia enters a relationship with a young man who is launching a career with US clandestine services. Patricia’s world is abruptly turned upside down when Will is discovered in a POW camp in Poland. As he is repatriated, Patricia is suddenly confronted with the reality that Will is now a double amputee. Facing years of rehabilitation, Will insists that Patricia move on with her life without him. Patricia marries the other man in her life, and the reader is introduced to the excitement of life in Havana and Mexico City in the 1950s. Nevertheless, Patricia finds herself inexorably drawn to her first love. The story ends with an affirmation of the indomitable power of love and the human spirit to overcome impossible odds.

In Love and War by Liz Byrski Pdf

In the aftermath of the Battle of Britain, airmen filled a small town where pioneering plastic surgeon Archibald McIndoe established revolutionary surgical and therapeutic treatments. For the child Liz Byrski, growing up in East Grinstead, the burnt faces of these airmen filled her nightmares. In her late 60s, Liz returned to make peace with her memories and to speak not only with the survivors—known as the Guinea Pig Club—but with the nurses who played a vital and unorthodox role in their treatment, sometimes at a significant personal cost.

Love and War by Warren MacQuarrie,Clara MacQuarrie Pdf

This is about the extraordinary lives of two people who fell in love on the cusp of WWII. They secretly married after the war started and survived three wars while raising a family of five. Clara and Warren married while he was in the Marine Corps’ flight training. Over thirty years of highly decorated marine service, Warren flew thirty different aircraft and survived scores of combat missions and close calls in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. What saw Warren through the darkest hours of three wars and Clara through lonely and extended separations while taking care of five kids were their dedication and love. Warren would always come home, and Clara would always be there. And after seventy-five years of marriage, that holds true today. Affectionately known by friends and family as the General and the Colonel, Clara and Warren’s memoir is an inspiring, remarkable story of love and war—a journey through life.

Love and War by Peg Sutherland Pdf

Magdalena Murphy and Clarence Stirling almost got married—fifty years ago—but one of them left the other stranded at the altar. The rest was history. The Murphys and the Stirlings were at war. Two generations later, Sandy Murphy and Drew Stirling just naturally locked horns when they were thrown together over a yogurt campaign, which prompted a renewed debate in Tyler over the wedding that never was. They were destined to feud, it seemed, and to love just as passionately as their kin. But would they at least make it to the altar?

Ike in Love and War by Richard Striner Pdf

Dwight D. Eisenhower is one of America’s greatest and least appreciated presidents. Behind the demeanor that made Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower so popular was a cold-as-steel intelligence that kept his country prosperous and out of danger. Because his operating methods were so deeply hidden, it is only in the past few decades that historians have grasped the full extent of his achievements. Ike in Love and War shows the hidden sacrifices that made Eisenhower remarkable. It probes the mission that was driving him: the quest to reconcile his skill as a fighter with his mother’s pacifism, which led him to become the greatest peacekeeper of his age. More than other biographies, this one explores the man’s emotions. It puts the long-standing dispute about his romance with Kay Summersby in a new perspective: tragedy. Here is the story of a unique American, the passion and brilliance he kept concealed, the ambition that propelled him, the sacrifices that wore down his health, and the sheer self-mastery that made it all look easy. It never was. His achievements are timely as Americans face unprecedented dangers. This is the story of the world Ike made, the things he achieved, and the surprises that may still be in store for us as we strive to understand his life in full.

Love and War by Robert Huddleston Pdf

This is a book of fiction, a war novel that required considerable research into the two World Wars. Having been born three years before Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic, the author's teenage years focused on the Great War and combat duty in the Second World War led to a lifetime of learning and writing of the two epics of the 20th century. To those who question the value of fiction over nonfiction, the novelist Barbara Kingsolver offered this: "I love fiction that educates me on the sly about something I did not realize I wanted to know. As long as novelists have done their research and honored accuracy where it counts, I'd rather learn from a confabulation than a textbook. This story, therefore, honors the historical facts while introducing fictional characters in love and war. Also present in the story are commentaries of issues often distorted by propaganda.

Love and War by Tom Digby Pdf

Ideas of masculinity and femininity become sharply defined in war-reliant societies, resulting in a presumed enmity between men and women. This so-called battle of the sexes intensifies in tandem with dispositions to fight actual wars. These are among the fascinating discoveries Tom Digby shares in Love and War, which describes the making and manipulation of gender in both militaristic and nonmilitaristic societies and the consequences for men and women in their personal, romantic, sexual, and professional lives. Drawing on cross-cultural comparisons and examples from popular media, including sports culture, the rise of ÒgonzoÓ and ÒbangbusÓ pornography, and ÒInternet trolls,Ó Digby shows how misogyny and toughness are deployed to construct masculinity in ways that undermine relations between women and men. Through diverse philosophical methodologies, he identifies the cultural elements that contribute to heterosexual antagonism, such as an enduring faith in male force to solve problems, the glorification of violent men who suppress caring emotions, the devaluation of menÕs physical and emotional lives, an imaginary gender binary, male privilege premised on the subordination of women, and the use of misogyny to encourage masculine behavior. Digby tracks the Òcollateral damageÓ of this disabling misogyny in the lives of both men and women, but ends on a hopeful note. He ultimately finds the link between war and gender to be dissolving in many societies: war is becoming degendered, and gender is becoming demilitarized.
