The Life Heroic by Elizabeth Svoboda Pdf

Heroes are superhuman. Or at least it's easy to assume that when you read ripped-from-the-news stories of derring-do. But in reality, almost anyone who's motivated can be a hero, and the heroes who make the biggest impact aren't always the ones who make headlines. This approachable, research-backed guide will equip kids with the tools they need to become everyday heroes. Along the way, you'll hear from real heroes living out the truth of psychologist Phil Zimbardo's words: Most heroes are ordinary. It's the act of heroism that's extraordinary. -- "Other Print"

Constance Garnett by Richard Garnett,Constance Garnett Pdf

Born in Brighton in 1861, Constance Clara Garnett (née Black) was the sixth of eight children. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge she studied Latin and Greek, as well as Russian. She married Edward Garnett in 1889 and they had one son, David. It was on a visit to Russia in 1893 that Garnett met Leo Tolstoy and this meeting prompted her to begin translating the Russian literature that she was most passionate about. As a translator of Gogol, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Turgenev, Chekhov and Dostoevsky among others, Constance Garnett translated about 70 Russian works and received great acclaim from writers such as D. H. Lawrence and Joseph Conrad. Her translations had a major effect on readers and were reprinted well into the twentieth century. First published in 1991 and written by her grandson Richard Garnett, Constance Garnett is the biography of an extraordinary woman who, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, made Russian literature available to the English speaking public. 'When you come to the last page you feel you have travelled through life with a peculiarly British heroine, self-effacing, frugal, honourable, clear-thinking, brave, and above all a worker on a scale that can only be called heroic.' Claire Tomalin, Independent on Sunday

I'm Staying with My Boys by Jim Proser,Jerry Cutler Pdf

I'm Staying with My Boys is a firsthand look inside the life of one of the greatest heroes of the Greatest Generation. Sgt. John Basilone held off 3,000 Japanese troops at Guadalcanal after his 15-member unit was reduced to three men. At Iwo Jima he single-handedly destroyed an enemy blockhouse, allowing his unit to capture an airfield. Minutes later he was killed by an enemy artillery round. He was the only Marine in World War II to have received the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, and a Purple Heart and is arguably the most famous Marine of all time. I'm Staying with My Boys is the only family-authorized biography of Basilone, and it features photographs never before published. Distinctive among military biographies, the story is told in first person, allowing readers to experience his transformation, forged in the horrors of battle, from aimless youth to war hero known as "Manila John".

Hero by Michael Korda Pdf

Michael Korda’s Hero is an epic biography of the mysterious,Englishman whose daring exploits made him an object of intense fascination, known the world over as ‘Lawrence of Arabia. An Oxford Scholar and archaeologist, T.E. Lawrence was sent to Cairo as an intelligence officer in 1916 and vanished into the desert in 1917. He united and led the Arab tribes to defeat the Turks and eventually capture Damascus, an adventure he recorded in the classic Seven Pillars of Wisdom. A born leader, utterly fearless and seemingly impervious to pain and danger, he remained modest, and retiring. Farsighted diplomat, brilliant military strategist, the first media celebrity, and acclaimed writer, Lawrence was a visionary whose achievements transcended his time: had his vision for the modern Middle East been carried through, the hatred and bloodshed that have since plagued the region might have prevented. The democratic reforms he would have implemented as British High Commissioner of Egypt, are those the Egyptians are now demanding, 91 years later. Ultimately, as this magisterial work demonstrates, Lawrence remains the paradigm of the hero in modern times.
