The History of Banking in Canada (Classic Reprint) by Roeliff Morton Breckenridge Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Banking in Canada Efforts to introduce the practice of banking into the British North American provinces were put forth as early as 1792. The "Canada Banking Company," then organized by certain English firms and Montreal merchants, was not destined long to survive its origin, although one at least of its 5-shilling notes which has been preserved (No. 6803) is proof that it exercised the function of issue. It seems to have left little trace, either in men's memories or in the records of the time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Canadian Banking System by Roeliff Morton Breckenridge Pdf

Excerpt from The Canadian Banking System: 1817-1890 If any were required, a reason - perhaps a suffi cient reason - for the present investigation might be offered in the circumstance that an essay to present in a systematic and fairly thorough manner the facts with which I have attempted to deal, has never yet appeared in print. The growth and improvement of the banking system are parts of the commercial and legislative history of Canada even less cultivated than the broader field of its economic history. Yet the course of the development ought by no means to be devoid of interest; the results in some respects are unique; and where it is now carried on the Cana dian system of banking is believed to be productive of the highest possible advantages. A second reason could well be found in relation with the banking situation of the United States. Observers in all quarters have noticed the growing necessity for reform in the currency and banking system Of this country, and have remarked the demonstration of the necessity in the frightful crisis precipitated by distrust in the value of the currency commonly used. They have noticed also, especially among those who are most deeply interested in the organization of credit, the growing conviction of this necessity - a conviction of which the last and most Significant expressions are the resolutions adopted on the 11th October, 1894, by the American Bankers' Association, in convention assembled at Baltimore. It is possible, at least, that from some account Of the Canadian banking system an American will Obtain instructive contrasts, as well in history, as in present organization and methods of operation, to the system of banking and bank legislation which has Obtained in the United States. On Banks and Banking in Canada by J. H. Menzies Pdf

Excerpt from On Banks and Banking in Canada: A Study of the Bank Returns With Reference to Proposed Changes in the Bank Act; Treatise All these except the last two classes get the bank bills directly or indirectly from the banks, generally by way of advances or discounts, sometimes as drafts on actual deposits the well-to-do classes get them as drafts on similar deposits, or if in business, also by way of discounts city shopkeepers, who hold a very large sum in the aggregate (this in the main is the Circulation created by manufacturers and importers), get them from workpeople and from the well-to-do classes country shopkeepers get them from farmers. It is the aggregate of these sums, kept floating at an average amount by the activities of business, operating through the Deposit account of the banks, that constitutes the bank Circulation. The Deposit account consists of fixed deposits, the proceeds and balances of proceeds of discounts, and current deposits. All these constitute the fund from which the banks make advances to the public for use in the domestic trade of the country; and these advances, with the drafts of the owners of actual deposits, are paid (i) In cheques to pav mercantile indebtedness (2) In bank bills and change (dominion notes and silver), to pay labor in factories, shops, and for industrial disbursements generally for purchases of agricultural and other natural products and for pocket money. Bank bills are really change for, and convenient because divisible substitutes for, cheques, just as the smaller Dominion notes and silver is change for bank bills.
