A History of Christian Missions During the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by G. F. Maclear Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Christian Missions During the Middle Ages The present Work in its original form obtained the Maitland Prize for the year 1861, when the following subject was proposed: "The several efforts made during the Middle Ages to propagate the Gospel, considered with reference to the external and internal condition of the Christian Church at the time." In deference to the wishes of the Examiners the publication of the work has been postponed somewhat beyond the usual period, in order that the numerous references might be verified and expanded. This I have endeavoured to do to the best of my power, amidst many other and more pressing duties, and have taken the opportunity also of amplifying details, especially in the xvith and xviith Chapters, which I was originally prevented by a severe illness from presenting otherwise than in a meagre outline. The quotations which occur from time to time in the notes, I have given, as far as possible, from the original authorities, and I trust I have carefully acknowledged my obligations to others, where I have been unable to consult the originals. A History of Christian Missions by Stephen Neill Pdf

A History of Christian Missions traces the expansion of Christianity from its origins in the Middle East to Rome, the rest of Europe and the colonial world, and assesses its position as a major religious force worldwide. Many of the world’s religions have not actively sought converts, largely because they have been too regional in character. Buddhism, Islam and Christianity, however, are the three chief exceptions to this, and Christianity in particular has found a home in almost every country in the world. Professor Stephen Neill’s comprehensive and authoritative survey examines centuries of missionary activity, beginning with Christ and working through the Crusades and the colonization of Asia and Africa up to the present day, concluding with a shrewd look ahead to what the future may hold for the Christian Church.

The Spiritual Expansion of Medieval Latin Christendom: The Asian Missions by James D. Ryan Pdf

During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries religious zeal nourished by the mendicants’ sense of purpose motivated Dominican and Franciscan friars to venture far beyond Europe’s cultural frontiers to spread their Christian faith into the farthest reaches of Asia. Their incredible journeys were reminiscent of heroic missionary ventures in earlier eras and far more exotic than evangelization during the tenth through twelfth centuries, when the western church Christianized Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. This new mission effort was stimulated by a variety of factors and facilitated by the establishment of the Mongol Empire, and, as the fourteenth century dawned, missionaries entertained fervent but vain hopes of success within khanates in China, Central Asia, Persia and Kipchak. The reports these missionaries sent back to Europe have fascinated successive generations of historians who analyzed their travels and struggled to understand their motives and aspirations. The essays selected for this volume, drawn from a range of twentieth-century historians and contextualized in the introduction, provide a comprehensive overview of missionary efforts in Asia, and of the developments in the secular world that both made them possible and encouraged the missionaries’ hopes for success. Three of the studies have been translated from French specially for publication in this volume.

A Short History of Medieval Christianity by G.R. Evans Pdf

What did people really believe in the Middle Ages? Much of our sense of the medieval period has come down to us from the writings of the learned: the abbots, priors, magnates, scholastic theologians and others who between them, and across Christendom, controlled the machinery of church and state. For G R Evans too much emphasis has been placed on a governing elite and too little on those - the great mass of the semi-literate and illiterate, and the emergent middle classes - who stood outside the innermost circles of ecclesiastical power, privilege and education. Her book finally gives proper weight to the neglected literature of demotic religion: the lives of saints; writings by those - including lay women - who had mystical experiences; and lively texts containing stories for popular edification. Ranging widely, from the fall of Rome to the ideas of the Reformation, the author addresses vital topics like the appeal of monasticism, the lure of the Crusades, the rise of the friars and the acute crisis of heresy. As Evans reveals, medieval Christianity was shaped above all by its promise of salvation or eternal perdition.
