A History of Dutch in the Far East (Classic Reprint) by Albert Hyma Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Dutch in the Far East Then followed years of disillusionment. Even peace did not bring back the old days of order and meticulous progress in nearly all directions. The revolution, which began with slogans of liberty and prosperity, ended with the liberty to destroy and to kill foreigners of all races. Our Indonesian friend continues with these simple words: Out of this ferment emerged the tragedy and problems of the Indonesian State and its peoples after their libera tion. Indonesia, one of the richest countries of the world and a nation with every possibility for advancement, be came, as it were, swamped in a morass. Holland of the Dutch (Classic Reprint) by Demetrius C. Boulger Pdf

Excerpt from Holland of the Dutch In the first place, an apology is due to Nederland and the Nederlanders for using the commonly accepted but inaccurate terms Holland and Dutchmen. Much as we should like to introduce the change in English usage, the effort is too hopeless of success to be attempted here. The only defence that can be made for the name Holland as applying to the whole country instead of a province is that it distinguishes it from Belgium, which also forms part of the historic and natural Netherlands. The same consideration or difficulty has led French writers to adopt a similar usage as far as the country is concerned, but with them the description of the people as Hollandais (i.e., Hollanders) is a more faithful rendering than our term "Dutch," which is based on the radical error of treating them as Germans. A tendency to call their country Holland has recently become noticeable among the people themselves, but there is none at all to speak of their nationality otherwise than as Netherlanders. At the zenith of his power Napoleon I haughtily described Holland as the alluvion of French rivers, and probably but for the Russian adventure this description would figure in French geographical works to-day. The lower courses of the Rhine, the Meuse, and the Scheldt reach the North Sea at various points separated by no more than sixty miles from north to south, and within that range not fewer than eight main channels have forced their ways to the ocean. The Ashgate Research Companion to Modern Imperial Histories by Professor John Marriott,Professor Philippa Levine Pdf

Taking a broad, comparative approach to imperial experiences, this volume provides an authoritative survey of the latest research into the histories of modern empires. The focus is on the era of modern imperial history dating approximately from the early sixteenth century to the present. Such a periodization enables the volume to include the European experience of imperial expansion and settlement, important historical experiences outside the west such as those of Russia, Japan and China, the collapse of European empires attendant on decolonization in the post World War II period, and the contemporary example of North America. The companion is divided into three sections, 'Times', 'Spaces' and 'Themes' which allows chronological, geographical and thematical approaches to be successfully combined. In so doing this volume provides a unique research tool that will be invaluable to all students and scholars interested in the history of empires, imperialism and colonialism in the post-classical world.

Boundaries and Their Meanings in the History of the Netherlands by Benjamin Jacob Kaplan,Marybeth Carlson,Laura Cruz Pdf

Traditionally, the term boundary applies to the demarcation between a physical place and another physical place, most commonly associated with lines on a map As the essays in this volume demonstrate, however, a boundary can also function in a more broadly conceptual manner. A boundary becomes not an imaginary line but a tool for thinking about how to separate any two elements, whether ideas, events, etc., into categories by which they become comprehensible and distinct. The scholar contributors seek not simply to discern the boundaries, but, and perhaps more importantly, to understand the process of delination, and its consequences. With its maverick history and grass-root political traditions, the Netherlands provides an auspicious setting to examine the historical function of boundaries both real and imagined.

The Role of Henri Borel in Chinese Translation History by Audrey Heijns Pdf

Against the historical background of Chinese translation in the West and the emergence of several prominent European translators of China, this book examines the role of a translator in terms of cross-cultural communication, the image of the foreign culture in the minds of the target audience, and the influence of their translations on the target culture. With the focus on the career and output of the Dutch translator Henri Borel (1869–1933), this study investigates different aspects of the role of translator. The investigation is carried out by analysing texts and probing the achievements and contributions of the translator, underpinned by documents from the National Archives and the Literature Museum in the Hague, the Netherlands. Based on the findings derived from this study, advice is offered to those now involved in the promotion and translation of Chinese culture and literature. It will make an important contribution to the burgeoning history of Chinese translation. This book will be of interest to anyone with an interest or background in the translation history of China, the history of sinology in the West, and the role of translators.

Java by Donald MacLaine Campbell Pdf

Excerpt from Java: Past Present, a Description of the Most Beautiful Country in the World, Its Ancient History, People, Antiquities, and Products, Vol. 1 Of these and many others of perhaps lesser importance I have made use and now and again drawn freely upon them. Otherwise the history is the result of personal study. The study of' Eastern peoples during my twenty-five years' sojourn in the Far East has always been a peculiarly delightful subject to me, but no Eastern folk have interested and fascinated me more than the J avans of the Dutch East Indies. Their daily tasks, their religion, their amusements, their customs, their feasts, their life, I have quite entered into and lived in thought as one of them. Sorrows they have none, at least not as we know them. The more I knew of them the more excitement was engendered to learn and study them further.
