A History of French Literature (Classic Reprint) by Charles Henry Conrad Wright Pdf

Excerpt from A History of French LiteratureHE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Short History of French Literature (Classic Reprint) by L. E. Kastner Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Modern French Literature (Classic Reprint) by L. Raymond De Vericour Pdf

Excerpt from Modern French Literature It is impossible to know a people well without an acquaintance with its literature. This is especially true with reference to France. In no other country is literature so emphatically the expression of society. The changes of opinion and sentiment within the last eighteen years have been faithfully represented by the various productions of the press. Since 1830, the incessant activity of the French mind has annually yielded in books, pamphlets, and monthly, weekly and daily journals, a quantity of printed matter which would form in octavo leaves, counting the copies of each edition, an average of two hundred and forty million volumes. In this mass are many worthless and worse than worthless productions, by some of which it is feared that modern French writers are often indiscriminately judged in the United States. But there are also contained in it numerous work which are both unexceptionable in spirit and excellent in form. The editor of the present treatise was unwilling, while at Paris, to lose an opportunity of becoming acquainted with the more valuable portions of recent French literature. He was naturally desirous that the results of hi conscientious studies might be offered to the public in such a way as would tend to remove prejudices with which the subject is unfortunately connected in this country. A Century of French Fiction (Classic Reprint) by Benjamin W. Wells Pdf

Excerpt from A Century of French Fiction This book is a study of novels, not of novelists. It seeks to show the development of what has come to be the chief genre in the most artistic of European literatures. The limitations that this purpose involves are obvious. Biography belongs here only in so far as heredity or environment influence those qualities in an author by which he in turn influences the development of fiction. With some novelists, such as George Sand, these are very significant; with others, such as Daudet, they are hardly significant at all. The poems, dramas, or essays of novelists are usually passed in silence, though they may be, as with Sainte-Beuve, the chief title to literary distinction. And in regard to the novels themselves, this book is less concerned with what is done than with how it is done; it seeks, not to retell a story, but to convey an artistic impression, and in the space that it accords to the 115 novelists and 688 novels or short stories that it names it is less influenced by an author's popularity than by the excellence or novelty of his technic, his style, or his ideas of the functions, ethical, social, philosophical, or artistic, of the novel. Many writers are little read who have been studied by those who are read much. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The History of French Literature by Annie Lemp Konta Pdf

Excerpt from The History of French Literature: From the Oath of Strasburg to Chanticler During several centuries these national and religious poems were orally transmitted from generation to generation until Charlemagne became the principal hero, his legend absorbing all others, and in the tenth century was born the chanson de gate of truly French character. A number of these chansons de geste were inspired by the oral traditions circulating during the Merovingian period, others were ih spired by the old Cantilenes. Our chansons de geste, there fore, says Leon Gautier, are military and not clerical, and owe nothing to certain Latin chronicles from which it is believed by some they have arisen. He tells us that the Chromque do Turpin is posterior to the first chansons de giants. The Chronique do Turpin and most of the analogous legends are the works of some rhetorician of the monasteries who copied without intelligence and without animation our first chansons de geste. F. Scholle, also asserts that the poems had for a long time been preserved by oral tradition before having been written, and that the various readings of the diflerent compilations are due partly to the intervention of the jongleurs and not solely to the copyists. History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century (Classic Reprint) by Alexandre Rodolphe Vinet Pdf

Excerpt from History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century As to politics, authority reigns uncontrolled. The parliaments are mute. The Fronde is only a movement without ability. Political questions are generally kept out of view. No man of talent during that time directed his attention to such points, with the exception of Fenelon and Massillon toward the end of the century. Every where else silence is maintained. Perhaps La Bruyere deserves also to be excepted. In regard to literature, in it more than in anything else, if possible, the same need of authority makes itself be felt. At that time conventional forms were established, of which some may be defended and others were adopted without examination. It is a kind of literary religion, mingled no doubt with supersti tion, but not with superstition in itself, because it is founded on true principles. It is connected with the worship of antiquity, imperfectly comprehended indeed, but approved, felt, and honoured. Here and there, however, We perceive some feeble wishes for independence; some men of talent complain, that litera ture is not sufficiently national, and they would go back to the middle ages, our own antiquity: they would free style from cer tain laws and restraints; but these are only powerless desires, the attempts of some men of second-rate ability, and weak aspira tions at what we in the present day term romantisme. No man of eminence adopts the creed of such ordinary persons, who consigned to contempt by the oracles of the classical religion, of which Boileau is high priest. Masters of French Literature (Classic Reprint) by George McLean Harper Pdf

Excerpt from Masters of French Literature For the general reader, I fancy such a his tory of French literature would be far more illuminating than some of the detailed hand books which bewilder the mind with thousands of names and titles, and brief, insufficient ah stracts of books great and small. There would be the difference that exists between a series of views from twenty mountain tops, each one within sight of its immediate neighbors, and the record made by a pedometer. Or, to vary this rather prolonged figure of speech which has helped us thus far, such a history would possess the advantage that a person gains from residence in a few foreign towns, as compared with spending an equal amount of time in rapid travel, from one meaningless hotel to another.
