Handbook of the Alabama Conference Historical Society by Thomas M. Owen Pdf

Excerpt from Handbook of the Alabama Conference Historical Society: M. E. Church, South, 1910 This handbook has been compiled for a twofold pur pose, namely, to set forth what has been done by the Ala bama Conference Historical Society, and to stimulate its members and friends to further effort. It is felt that the record of four years' activity, as set forth herein, has fully justified the foundation of the Society. This being true, the co-operation of all members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Alabama Should be given the Society in the development of its future plans. These plans involve popularization, the collection of manuscript and printed materials, the collection of relics, publications, and marking historic sites. Let every one, whether preacher or layman, respond fully and loyally to all reasonable calls, and the history, and the materials for the history of the Methodists, of Methodism and the Methodist Church in Alabama are safe. A History of Methodism by William Henry Sweet Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Methodism: In Northwest Kansas The last several years of the life of William H. Sweet were devoted to the collecting of material and the writing of this volume. He very much hoped to finish the task and see the book through the press himself, but death came suddenly on January 5, 1919. He had planned to publish the book at his own expense and ask the Conference to sell it for the benefit of Kansas Wesleyan University, and before his death he had talked to his children about the plan. They accordingly now desire to carry out his desire, and the present volume is published at the expense of the heirs of William H. and Rose A. Sweet. On its completion the entire edition will be turned over to the Northwest Kansas Conference and the proceeds of the sale of the book are to go to the Kansas Wesleyan University. The manuscript has been published, practically as it was left by its author. He greatly regretted that more complete material was not forthcoming in response to his many appeals, but the book contains much material that would no doubt soon have been lost, and those, who in the future will write of pioneer days in Northwest Kansas will find here a storehouse of interesting material. The Biographical Introduction has been added, though the author did not so intend, and has been prepared by his eldest son, Dr. Paul W. Sweet. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1803 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXII. The Work Of Methodism In Alabama Undeb The New Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. FOR the series of years beginning with 1846, when the Southern jurisdiction went into operation, and running to the time of the civil war between the States, the Tennessee Conference had in the State of Alabama two entire Districts, the Huntsville and the Florence, the last sometimes called Tuscumbia. The membership in the two Districts, including both races, aggregated something over six thousand. There was from year to year some fluctuation in numbers, though the variation for all these years was not very great. The leading preachers who occupied in the two Districts in the beautiful Tennessee Valley during a decade and a half of years were: The Revs. Samuel S. Moody, Thomas Maddin, W. G. Hensley, Heury P. Turner, Thomas W. Randle, James W. Allen, Justinian AVilliams, Adam S. Riggs, Finch P. Scruggs, W. D. F. Sawrie, W. R. J. Husbands, Moses M. Henkle, Anderson G. Copeland, A. F. Driskill, J. D. Barbee, Alexander R. Erwin, Pleasant B. Robinson, J. R. Plumer, Wellborn Mooney. The Rev. S. S. Moody was born in Virginia, in 1810, and died May 5, 1863. His last work in Alabama was the Florence Station. A hard worker, calm and saintly, he was classed as one of "the brightest and the best" of the preachers of the Tennessee Conference. The Rev. Thomas Maddin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 13, 1796, and he died in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1874. His father was a Romanist, and trained him in that faith, but he was brought into a saving knowledge of the grace of God by the Methodists, whom he found in his native place, and he, in the midst of bitter opposition, cast his lot with that people. He was licensed to preach in 1818, and continued...

A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by James M. Buckley Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities.
