A History of Russian Literature by K. Waliszewski Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Russian Literature In the year 1834 the great Biélinski, on his maiden appearance as a literary critic, bestowed the following epigraph, borrowed from one of his fellow-critics, Senkowski, on his first essay: - "Do we possess a literature?" "No, we have nothing but a book-trade!" Eighteen months later, he began to publish a half-yearly Review under this somewhat confusing title, - Nothings about Nothing. Hence we may conceive what the country of Pouch-kine, of Gogol, of Tourgueniev, and of Tolstoi has gained by the labour of the past half-century. For this labour has not confined itself to the amassing of a treasure-house of conceptions, exquisite or stately. It has endowed the nation that conceived them, and Bielinski himself as well, with the conscious possession of a national genius, the anterior manifestations of which had escaped appreciation, because they had been judged from the æsthetic point of view only, and not from that historical standpoint which alone befitted them. A History of Russian Literature (Classic Reprint) by K. Waliszewski Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Russian Literature The Slavs, like the Latins, the Celts, and the Germans, belong to the Aryan or indo-european race. Oppressed for many years by the Western peoples, which drew the word slave from the appellation Slav, scorned by their German neighbours, who would not regard their race in any other light but that of ethnological matter (et/mo logz'seher Stofi), they probably owed their inferiority solely to their geographical position. Modern civilisation, like that of the ancients, built itself up almost independently of the Slavs. Yet they have raised their protest against a too absolute decree of exclusion, and they have right on their Side. The Slav nation did not, indeed, hollow out the channels of the double movement, intellectual or religious, Renaissance and Reform, from which the modern era issued, but it opened them in two directions. Copernicus and John Huss were both Slavs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of Russian Literature: With a Lexicon of Russian Authors My Dear Prince, Some agreeable associations connected with a winter at Munich, and a voyage down the Rhine, having been still more pleasantly revived in England, it is natural that I should wish to perpetuate the remembrance of them by any memorial, however humble, which I may be able to contribute, in relation to a subject on which you have so often talked, and I have so often listened. I have been enabled by your conversation to appreciate in some degree the hidden treasures of the literature of Russia; and the interest taken in its diffusion by one who is so familiarly acquainted as yourself with European languages and authors in general, ought to be alone a sufficient guarantee, that it possesses no inconsiderable beauties even in comparison with the productions of other and older lands. A Short History of Russian Literature by Serge Tomkeyeff Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Russian Literature The history of literature presents a progressive development of the art of writing in every country, and is correlated with the culture of the people. Therefore a historical treatise on literature must be a review of the productions of a people in chronological order, so as to illustrate the achievements in culture in which the spiritual endeavours have found expression and influenced its life and character. This literature at the outset may be oral, i.e., transmitted by word of mouth, but ultimately and generally it is written, and hence called literature. The Russian language is Slavonic, one of the branches of Indo-European. Other great branches are Greek, some Indian languages, Latin, Teutonic, etc.; but the nearest affinities to the Slavonic are Lithuanian, and possibly the earliest form of Celtic and Teutonic. The Russian language is the dialect spoken in the principality of Moscow, and arose in its present structure after the Tatar invasion. The earliest Russian literature is in mediæval Russian, and originated at Kiev, where the first Russian State was founded by the House of Rurik. The first princes of Kiev were Scandinavians, who consolidated a Russian State. The language was called Russian from the time when the Slavs of Kiev under the rule of these Scandinavian princes (called Vaerings, or in Russian Variág) became united into this single State, which was called Rus. It is supposed that Rus was the appellation originally given to the Variág princes. In prehistoric times all the Slavs must have spoken what was essentially one speech. The Cambridge Introduction to Russian Literature by Caryl Emerson Pdf

Russian literature arrived late on the European scene. Within several generations, its great novelists had shocked - and then conquered - the world. In this introduction to the rich and vibrant Russian tradition, Caryl Emerson weaves a narrative of recurring themes and fascinations across several centuries. Beginning with traditional Russian narratives (saints' lives, folk tales, epic and rogue narratives), the book moves through literary history chronologically and thematically, juxtaposing literary texts from each major period. Detailed attention is given to canonical writers including Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Bulgakov and Solzhenitsyn, as well as to some current bestsellers from the post-Communist period. Fully accessible to students and readers with no knowledge of Russian, the volume includes a glossary and pronunciation guide of key Russian terms as well as a list of useful secondary works. The book will be of great interest to students of Russian as well as of comparative literature.
