Excerpt from A Household Book of English Poetry The first question which I asked myself, when I resumed a purpose long ago entertained, and then for a long while laid aside, of publishing such a selection of English Poetry as the present, was this, namely, whether Mr. Palgrave by his Golden Treasury had not so occupied the ground that there was no place for one who should come after. The selection is one made with so exact an acquaintance with the sources from which such a Trea sury as his should be replenished, with so fine a taste in regard of what should be admitted there, that this was the conclusion to which at the first I was disposed to arrive. But on further consideration I saw reason to change my mind. The volume which I meditated was on so different a scheme and plan from his, that, while no doubt I should sometimes go over ground which he had gone over before, it seemed likely that for the most part our paths would be different, and the poems which I should select not identical with those already chosen by him. This to so great an extent has proved the case, that of more than three hundred pieces which compose this volume, less than sixty have appeared in his. And. Had it no higher function, it would but little deserve to be, what it has so often proved, the delight of youth, the inspiring companion of manhood, and the solace of age -it could never have attained that high place which has belonged to it, as one of the most influential powers for the education of the human race. Poetry may, indeed, be de graded and very commonly the depth of the degradation is in proportion to the original height of what has thus been brought low - painting, sculpture, and architecture, kindred arts, which work with inferior materials and within a narrower range, too often have been corrupted by the same malignant influences. But the effect of such degradation is ever the withdrawal of a gift sent to strengthen the human heart and to elevate human action; while the cause of it is to be found mainly in a low or a false estimate of that which has thus been shorn of its duties and functions. Richard Chenevix Trench (Richard Trench until 1873; 9 September 1807 - 28 March 1886) was an Anglican archbishop and poet. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Richard Trench (1774-1860), barrister-at-law, and the Dublin writer Melesina Chenevix (1768-1827). His elder brother was Francis Chenevix Trench. He went to school at Harrow, and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1829. In 1830 he visited Spain. While incumbent of Curdridge Chapel near Bishop's Waltham in Hampshire, he published (1835) The Story of Justin Martyr and Other Poems, which was favourably received, and was followed in 1838 by Sabbation, Honor Neale, and other Poems, and in 1842 by Poems from Eastern Sources. These volumes revealed the author as the most gifted of the immediate disciples of Wordsworth, with a warmer colouring and more pronounced ecclesiastical sympathies than the master, and strong affinities to Alfred Lord Tennyson, John Keble and Richard Monckton Milnes.

Excerpt from The Unseen House: And Other Poems In the free-verse forms contained in this volume the author has aimed to obtain the qualities of nature cadence suggested by such sounds as that of running water, the liquid notes of water dropping into a pool, the voices of the wind - sound-sequences in which, however irregular the impression, there appear to be certain definite rhythmic recurrences. There is one conventional aspect of modern English verse which transgresses the rules of clear perception and does much to impede natural expression. That is the custom of beginning verse invariably with a capital. This tends to interrupt the continuity of thought demanded by the continuity of the sentence. The more logical Latin mind has adopted the sensible rule, exemplified in modern French and Spanish verse, of limiting the capital letters to the beginning of the sen tence. And Since free-verse particularly demands this continuity in expression, the reform has been. Adopted for the poems of that character contained in this volume.
