A Hundred Years of Dutch Architecture 1901-2000 by Jaap de Jong,Pieter van Wesemael,Willemijn Wilms Floet Pdf

"Reconstructs the frames of reference that informed the practice of architecture in the Netherlands during the last century. The book provides a detailed documentation of twenty key architectural works, based on the original plans. Each of these works embodies a specific response to an architectural problem and represents a crystallization point of one of the various approaches that can be distinguished within the gamut of design strategies, namely a traditionalist, an expressionist, a functionalist, a rationalist and a post-modernist approach. These five approaches to architecture are reconstructed by analysing the interconnection between a building's form, construction and function. Their architectural and social significance is examined in five separate essays that precede the documentation. Difficult though it may be to classify individual buildings according to shared functional, constructional and formal characteristics, this does not mean that it is impossible to discern certain lines of development running through Dutch architectural production. Those lines are clearly set out in a removable 'Calendar'. One hundred representative buildings, one for each year, are placed chronologically against the backdrop of technological and social developments. The 'Calendar' traces a path for today's designers, through the maze of stories about architecture, to the buildings themselves"--Back cover.

Architecture In Use by DJM van der Voordt,HBR van Wegen Pdf

This unique book discusses programming, design and building evaluation providing a ‘joined up’ approach to building design. By linking the functional and architectonic qualities of a building, the authors show the practical implications of the utility value of buildings. Starting by looking at how the relationship between form and function has been dealt with by different approaches to architecture from a historical perspective, it goes on to discuss how the desired functional quality and utility value of a building can be expressed in a brief and given a physical form by the architect. Finally, it advises on how to carry out post-occupancy evaluation and provides the architect with methods and techniques for testing whether the intended utility value of a building has been achieved.

Design Quality in New Housing by Matthew Cousins Pdf

This book addresses the need for an in-depth study into design quality in new housing. The wider implications of policy and design are examined through a series of case studies of new housing projects in the UK and the Netherlands. Dutch interdisciplinary design and modern methods of construction are widely considered to be of the highest quality from which much can be learned and understood. This new guide offers architects the best practice for the design, policy and construction of new homes. The author considers proposals for the Thames Gateway and government incentives to create better quality housing, including the £60,000 house and design reviews. The wider implications of skills and training of architects, planners, design professionals and those parties involved in housing are also addressed.

Ways to Study and Research Urban, Architectural and Technical Design by T.M. de Jong,D.J.M. van der Voordt Pdf

How can we develop a scientific basis for architectural, urban and technical design? When can a design be labelled as scientific output, comparable with a scientific report? What are the similarities and dis-similarities between design and empirical research, and between design research, typological research, design study and study by design? Is there a need for a particular methodology for design driven study and research? With these questions in mind, more than forty members of the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology have described their ways of study and research. Each chapter shows the objectives, the methodology and its implementation in search for a deeper knowledge of design processes and an optimal quality of the design itself. The authors - among them architects, urban planners, social scientists, lawyers, technicians and information scientists – have widely differing backgrounds. Nevertheless, they share a great deal. The central focus is a better understanding of design processes, design tools and the effects of design interventions on issues such as utility, aesthetics meaning, sustainability and feasibility.

20th Century Architecture in the Netherlands by Hans Ibelings Pdf

This richly illustrated book provides an introduction to twentieth century Dutch architecture. Ten concise chapters, each covering a single decade, discuss a selection of characteristic buildings, referring to the major events and developments of each period. Architectural history is not defined here as a cyclical succession of styles or generations, but as a heterogenous collection of buildings and designs which are often based on equally differing approaches. Apart from the internationally renowned masterpieces by architects like Berlage, Oud, Duiker, Van Eyck and Koolhaas this book includes numerous lesser known buildings which underline the versatility and quality of Dutch architecture.

Double Dutch by Bernard Hulsman Pdf

Architecture critic and journalist Bernard Hulsman describes how Dutch architecture experienced an unprecedented boom in the past quarter century. Dutch architects surprised the world with unconventional designs, such as the Kunsthal by Rem Koolhaas and the spectacular Dutch pavilion by MVRDV at the World Exhibition in Hanover in 2000. But Hulsman also shows how postmodernism's breakthrough in the world's most modern architectural country occurred almost unnoticed. He also describes the failed deregulated housing revolution of Wilde Wonen, the reappearance of ornament and the increasing concern for craft and sustainability.

Passion and Control by Freek Schmidt Pdf

Traditional models for studying the architecture of Western Europe in this period have not fitted the Dutch experience and, as a result, Dutch architecture has been left out of the picture. Post 1750, the Netherlands experienced an economic boom and a period of scientific, economic, cultural and social reform. Frederik Schmidt describes this background for a revival of interest in architecture triggered by the professionalisation of the architect and engineer, and the need for new building types.
